Open 365 days of the year, our skilled. and hwJhly experien￿ tsam have handled over 100.000 calls from people from all parts of Scottish Borders and from many different walks of life. Those who use the helplin8 value th8 OPPOrtunty to speak confidentially al￿ut the challenges they f8ce to someone who is both widependent and supwtive. Many of these calls are with people who are experiencing feelings of extreme distress and hO￿lesSneSS about various aspects of their Itfe. Nevertheless, they can be vulnerable. stressed, dep￿sSed, and desperate to talk to someone with ￿orn they can build both rapport and Irust. Borderline has demonstrated over the last 20 years that it delrvers this unique service to our rural populati¢)n in a conskslent and professk)nal ￿ay. For many callers. Borderline is a lrfeline. Our rn8pon8• to the Cov1&19 sltsmtlon Throughout the pandemic we were ab￿ to maintain an unchaThJed and continuous se￿1￿, although w8 had to make minor adaptations to alk)w us to do this safely and within the national guidance. Our priority was to offer the sam8 P8rson-cenlred support for callers in this particularly dtfficult period while ensuring our helpliners W￿re safe in their practice both physically and emotionally. Athough each member of our team has worked ￿th Borderline many years and are well-practiced in provKJing highty skilled Support, we were mindfijl of the unw]ue stresses that this sf(uation could brlng for helpliners. Our team worked closely with each other each evening. and aRhough based in separate locations. were atrAe to offer support and supervisM)n to each other every evening. We also developed reg￿ar habits of 'checking in, with each other out with Ihe evening shrfts, which created a strO￿er bc￿￿ between us. In the puttng together of this r8POrt and in reflecting on the year behind us it V4VdS noted by the Borderline team that a new closeness had developed amongst us havrtg shared this very dFfficuK yet unique experien￿. During this the helpline ￿ntinUed to be extremely busy. We found that the majority of the callers talked a￿￿t ongoing issues with their mental health and life situations. However. wthin each of these caus there was definitely an element of anxiety about the covid-19 situation. and discu&sk)n ar￿nd vatious issues such as k)w mood. in¢￿ased isolation and practical worries such as g(Mng out to get shopp#ig etc. It was also been pointed OLrt to us from several cauers who experience k)ng temi mentsl issues that life had not changed very much, that the an￿ty arKI isolation be￿¥j experienc*d more wtdely amongst the general population is their'normal.. They hope that Ihe ¢ovid-19 srtuation may help to highlight how devastating these feelings can be to overall wellbein9. and that rn0￿ support may be available to mentsl heatth sufferers in the hjng term.
