Members of the Kirk Session are the (￿.ar1* trustee5. Thg Kirk Session fflembers are the elders of the
ChLtrch and are chosen from those members of the Church who afe considered to have the
approprlat@ gift5 and skllls. The minister. who is a member of the Kirk Session.15 elected by the
conÉre8ation and lndutt.ed by Presbytery.
Oryanlsatlonal Structure
The Klrk Session, whlch meets four tlmes a year and at other times as required. Is responslble for the
splrltual and temporal affairs within the Church. Commsttees affe establlshed for Administratlon,
Chirities & Welfare, Finance. outreach & Nurture. and Propert¥. In addition, there is now a Pastoral
Care Team. All are convened by a Session Mernber, and reports are presented to the tull Se5510n.

The Church of Scotland Is frlnitèrlan in doctrine, Refomled In tradltlon and Presbyterian In pollty. It
exists to 8lor7fy God and to work for the advancement of Christ's Klngdom throughout the world. As
a national Church, it acknowled8es a distinc¢ive call ar,d duty to brinR the ordinances of reli8lon to
the people in every parlsh of Scoiland through a territori)I mlnlstry. It COvaperate5 Wlth other
Churches In varlous e¢umeffiical bodies in Scotland and beyond.
Pennin8hame St John's promotes the Chrfstian faith through worship and outreach and s8Nes the
communSty of Newton Stewart and surroundin8 area. Moming worshlp takes place in Pennln8hame
St John's every Sunday at 10.30am and these servlce5 are recorded and uploaded onto Pennln8h8me
St John's YouTube channel, website and Facebook pè8e. Gatherin8 songs arè performed bv a small
group of sin8er5 Ortd musiciBns at ihe beginning of mornln8 worship and the choir perform
throughout the year at Easter, Remembrance Sunday and Nine Lesson and Carols setvlces. A
monthly evenin8 service c3lled ihe Gatherin8, Voune People and 5choo15. weekly Sunday Club, Bible
Studies, Mornln8 Prayer Prayers for Peace all take place. Regular Men's Breakfasts and
Fèllowshlp Dlnners are held in local ¥enue5 and are an opportunlty to enjoy fellow5hlp and support
local businessès. A group for young people aged Primary 7 to Secondary a8e meet for pizza and
games evenln8s and monthly activity night5 in conjunction with garcaple Abernethy Trust.

Achievements and Performance
As of 31" December 2024. the Communlon Roll stood at 334 members. no weddings and 20 funerals
were conducted during the year. The Sunday Ciknb has 24 children enrolled and the Guild mntinue5
wlth 16 members.
A week-lon8 Holiday Club wa5 held in Jvty with 80 children registered for the week with a peak
attendance of 72 and around 12 teenagers coming alon8 to the evening events. An enjoyable family
ceilidh and barbeque rounded off a very 5uccesslul week.
Over 200 paple gathered at the opening of the Christmas Tiee Festlval which ran durin8 Advent
weekends. 77 trees were on dlsplay with contributors r•n8ing from ind￿ri￿Val5, charitie51 groups.
or8anisailons and local buslnesses.
Coples ofthe church na&azine ￿￿ delivered to every church memberto letthem know about the
life of the church.
The Kirk Session donated £150 bursaries to two local stuoents from the McLÈan bursary.
A cris15 relief donation of £40 was made from Oou8las Mortlfication fund for the poor and needv.
The consregatbon Supports local and International charlties. Donatlons have been sent io Chrlstian
Aid, the Church of Scotland'5 World Missbon Counc•l and £245.75 was donated to F88shell Cambodia
after they 8ave a presèntatlon durin8 morning worshlp about thelr work to protect vulnerable
chSldren In Cambodla. The Coffee Morning for Homelessness in January and the Chrlstmas Tree
Festival in Dectmbef raisèd £1,966.30 for Bethany Chdstian Trust. The congregation contlnues to
support the Machars Churches, 8aslc$ Bank whlch provide.5 vltal support for those strsjggllng wlth
the c05tryof-lfving crisis.
The ¢hurch wa5 Used as a venue by the Gvlld for their BIR Slng and a successful fundraiser for
Newton Stewan Music Fe511val showcasin8 youn8 musi¢ian$,
Futur¢
It is antl¢ipated that funds wlll need to be raised to reyir the tower. In November funds were
approved to install a new commerclal kitchen In the Hall. A 5-year plan has been dr)wn up io
refurblsh the Manse to be funded from Resprves.

The major source of fundir* contlnues to be through weekly offeriry and re8ular 8Ning. "Gift Aid"
continues to be the maln source ol tongregational 8ivins along with tax reclaimed on GSft Aid.
There has been a graduol increase In the amount of donations received this year across all types of
givlng. Funera15 and weddir6s had no COVID restrlrtlorns. and the use of the hall offe￿d fully to
community 8roups.
B y the end of 2024 we were able to use £5,rxI) from the General Fund toward5 the refijrbishment of
the new Hall kitchen. We ended the year with a def￿. an unrestricted Excess of Payments over
Recelpts of mlnus.. £4.838 {2023- surplus £56.4621. An overall Excess of Payments over Rècelpis
deficlt of minus- £4,71412023: surplus £57.308) wa5 vnade duiin8 this financial year.

Reserves Policy (cont.)
At the end of year the Church decreased its unrestricted cash funds to £77.32912023'. £82,167).
We have also been able to finish the year with a balance of E18,850 in Reserve Funds12023-
£29.IX)01 with f45.515 held in a separate unrestricted Reserve Funds purpose entitled 'Nelson
Legacl. Our aim is to keep the working baLince in Reserve Funds to a figure of not less than
£12,QW during 2024.
Refurbishment of the main bathroom in the Manse was approved b¥ ihe Kirk Session in 2024 and
pped at £7,CKJO. The Minister affereij to put the remalnder of his 2023 Manse Allowance and all of
hls 2024 Manse Allowance toward5 this project which was financed from Reserve Funds.
At the end of the year the Church hokls E3.070 {2023: £2,946? of reStr￿ted and endowment funds
which have been provided for ihe purposes specified in Note 3. In addition to cash funds, the
Church a150 hold5 unres".ric'.ed investments with a market value at the year end of £424.52712023'.

At ihe end of 2024. the Truslees de￿nated £2.(XX) for Outreach work and £1,5CA) for
Congre8ational Organisational work. The desrynated Manse Allowance Fund has been allocated
£1,200 for2025.

The Bènnan Trust138.384 units) and Bequest Endowment Fund$11.262 unilsl have been invested in
an Income Fund wlth The Church of Scotland's Investors. Trust, a fund which alms to provide
investors with a hi8h ar.d sustainable income with funds invested predominantly in fixed Inte￿St
bonds and operateé on a unitised basis. The Income FLJnd is professionally managed by Royal
London A55et Management based in London. Distributions from the Income Fund are made in March
nd September, bul they are effettively three months in arrears from :he perlods in which they have
been accrued. Consequently, the income accrued in the Fund in the first half of a ca,'endar year
determines rhe dlstribution made in September and ihe income received in the second half of a year
determinès the payment made in the following Marth. Investment IrKome received this year was
£25.64112023.' £19.8231.
In the 12-month perfod to September 2024. the fund delivered a total return of 12.77% which
outperformed it5 benchmark of 9.72%. Thi5 fund continues to deliver ￿turnS over the long temi
which are better than thal of the benchmark a8ain5t which the Fund is measured.
The Trustees, havin8 re8ard to the liquklity ￿qUIre￿entS o* ihe Church finances. have kept available
Reserve Funds in an interest-bearing Deposit Fund wtth The Chui ch of Scotland Investors, Trust.
Dep051t5 are moved between the ReseThe Fund and General Account on an as required basis so a5 to
keep a workin8 b?laree in the General Account at all tlmes. The Fund is professionally managed by
Thomas Miller Investment LI￿lted, bosed in London afKI Edinburgh. The Fund'5 aim is to provide
investors with a)mpetitive rates of interest. while presèNin8 nominal capital values
Deposits ère repayable on demand with interest calculated quarterfy in ar￿ar5, paid gross in May
and November and closety trdck Snterest received by the Trust.
Deposit Funtl interest received this year was £1.863 (2023- £1,219), although the legacy on dep051t
will have had an effert in the inueased Inte￿St receNed.

reflect the Pinancial position af the Church at that time. This must be done to eA5ure that the
financial staiements Comply with the Charilies and Trustee Investment Iscctlandl Aa 2(J)5. 1he
Charitie5 Accounts (Scotlandl Regulatlons 2006, and the RegLtlations Anent Con8re8ational Finance

The charity'5 trustees are responsible tor the p￿paration of the accounts In accordance wlth the
temis of the Charities and Trustee Investment Iscotlandl Act 2(X)S and the Charities Accounts
(Scotlandl Regulation5 21)06.
The charity truste￿5 consider that the. audit requirement of Regulation Iolllldl of the Account5
Flegulations does not apply. It Is my ￿ sponsibility to examine the accounts as required under section
441lllcl of the Art and to state whether particular matters have come ro my atteAis0n.

My examinatlon Is carried out in accordance with Regulatlon 11 of the Charitles Accounts15cotlandl
Régulations 2006. An examlnation includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity
nd a compari50n of the accounts presented with those records. It also Include5 conslderatlon of any
unusual items or disclosures in the accounts. and seeks explanations from the tru5tee5 concerning
any such matters. The procedure5 undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be
quired in an audlt, and consequently I do not express an audit oplnlon on the accounts.

to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 441111al of the 2QK15 Act

Inv•stmont Income
In 2010 the Con8re8ation became the beneficlary of the Income frorn the Bennan Trust, whose capltal
comprises a holdin8 of 4% Consolidated Loan Stock and a holdinB of 3.5% War Stock. On inception the
holdings had a market value of £31S,534. There Is provislon for the Trust to be brought to an end in
2060 Sn favour of the Parish of Pennin8hame, failing whieh, the General Trustees of The Church of
Scotland. In early 2015 the Government redeemed both of the above holdln85 and the Trusteès of The
Bennan Trust have now relnvested the capital in the Income Fund of The Church of Scotland Investorf
Trust.
The dlstrlbution of Income in this Income Fund was paid at the rate of 30 per unit Ippul in Marth and
September which Is back up to the level generaied prior to the Covi(I pandemic.
The Deposit Fund ha5 continued to benefit from increases in interest rates as the Bank of England Base
Rate has Increased. The annuol rate rose to 5.07% for the quarter to 30th September 2024. compared to
the same period in 2023 which was 4.8%

and loan fund. Ministers. stipend5 are pald in accordance witl? the national stipend scale, which Is
related to years of sp.ry1￿. For the year under ￿vieW the mlnimum Stipend was £31.642 and the
maximum stipend lin the W and subsequent year5 of 5eryice) £38,884.

Council Tax. telephone and travel costs. The total amount of unrestrif.ed donations mado bv

transactions during the year.
