Trustees' Report

The trustees present the annual report together with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2025.

Structure, governance and management

Nature of governing document

The society is a charitable unincorporated association and the purposes and administration are set out in our constitution.

Recruitment and appointment of trustees

Members of the Friends of Instrumental Music in East Dunbartonshire Schools are open to anyone with an interest in promoting the objectives laid out in our constitution. Members of the management committee are normally elected at our Annual General Meeting which is held in January-March.

Objectives and activities

Objectives, strategies and activities

The objects of the association are to advance the education of pupils by supporting the East Dunbartonshire Schools Instrumental Music Programme and encouraging pupils to maximise their musical potential.

East Dunbartonshire Council Instrumental Music Service (EDCIMS) provides instrumental tuition in schools and runs a number of bands and orchestras, all of which have annual residential courses. Apart from those being eligible for benefits, these courses are charged at cost to the families of pupils attending, with families often paying for multiple courses per year.

The main activities of the charity are: to fundraise to provide bursaries to financially assist families having difficulty meeting the full cost of the residential courses; to help with the cost of instrument repair and replacement where necessary; to provide support to the various instrumental groups within the East Dunbartonshire Schools Instrumental Music Programme.

Achievements and performance

General fundraising:

The main focus of general income generation has in the past been the holding of raffles at the various EDC concerts which took place in December, and a Spring Prize Draw which takes place at the end of March. This raised £1,932.97.

This year we also raised funds through selling EDC branded hoodies. This raised £45.

FIMEDS received £48.52 in donations from Easy Fundraising this year and £56.16 in bank interest.

Other Achievements:

No bursaries were awarded this year; however, we were able to provide £1000 of funds to contribute to a trip to Belgium.

Financial review

FIMEDS had income of £2,164, down from £2,913 last year. Expenditure for the year was £2,146 due to conductor fees and the Belgium trip, against £14,361 last year. There was an overall surplus in the year of £18 up from a deficit of £11,732 last year. The charity had £4,317 in reserves at the year-end, of all which have been treated as un-restricted funds. The petty cash balance has been maintained at the usual £120.

Policy on reserves

Friends of Instrumental Music in East Dunbartonshire Schools has a policy of keeping reserves at a level to be able to fund bursaries and required running costs.

Plans for Future periods

Aims and key objectives for future periods

Despite the cost-of-living crisis we aim to fund raise as much as possible to support the Instrumental Service and the access the children of East Dunbartonshire to it. Next year we would also purchase marketing material that will last for a long time, promote the orchestras and be a point of pride for our charity.

The annual report was approved by the trustees of the charity on 22[nd] February 2025 and signed on its behalf by:
