The Trustees present their ￿nu￿ report and financial state￿￿ts of the charity for the year
ended 31st December 2023.
1. Vision Staternent
'The ITision of The United Church of Bule (UCB) is to be a'7 days-&week Church., spreading
Christ's message through a highly motivated eongregation. together seNing and supporting
our members and the wider communty. through a variety of worship. the development of
fellowship. and the Christian care of those in need..
2. Constitution
The UCB wa$ established on r November 1999 by union of fve Congregations ￿ the Isle of
Bute
On 22fKI January 2015 the Delegation of the c￿ne11 of Assembly of the Church of Scotland
granted a new Deed of Unitary constituts.on to the UCB. This means that the temporal affairs
of the congregation are now administered by the lQ"rk SessIc￿ and C<xnmrttees govemed by
Standing Orders effective from that date.
3. Recruitmfrnt and Appointm?nt of Trustws
Members of the Kirk Session are the ¢*arity Trustees. The Kirk Sesyon's 34 members a
the elders ofthe church and are eleded from those members ofthe church ￿0 are considered
to have the appropriate gifts and skills. The Kirk Session and members of the congregation
are invrted to nominate individuals who are believed to have the skills and commitment to
contribute to the management affairs of the Churth.
Members of the congregats.on who are not elders. but are ￿nsidered to have relevant gffts
and skills, may be ctropled as ewespondiThJ members of the Kirk Sessicffj; these members
are not Trustees.
4. Organisation
The United Church of Bute's congregats'onal number is 201287 and it is a registered charity,
th charity number SC030563.

Ib) The membership of the Se55ion as at 3151 De￿rnber 2023 was 34 Elders and no
corresponding members. A full list of the members (induding those only seNed for part

4. Organisation lconlinued)
As part d the Presbytery of Ar￿1'S,8a￿S for Parish Grouping., UCB fomis a parish grouping
th Rothesay Trinity {Church of Seodand) on subjects such as joint worship and training.. the
Minister also liaises with all other c￿stian churches and Christian Fellowships on the island,
including some shared worship. The United Churth of Bute also L￿Operate5 with Bule
Churches Together.
The General Assembly in 2021 passed a Presbytery PlannirvJ Act requiring all
Presbyteries to submit updated Presbytery Plans during 2022 based on a reduced number of
ministerial posts and an assessment of all thureh buildings. The UCB actively participated in
this process. In June 2022 the Presby1ery of ￿gY11 decided that the ￿ congregations on Bute
should unite into a single congregation U￿ng the present UCB buildings and the Rothesay
Trinity buildings would be diswsed of. In late August 2022 the Kirk Session of Rothesay Trinity
church exercised their right to appeal against the process fdlowed leading to this decision. On
7th March 2023 UC8 heard that the appeal by Rothesay Trinity had been rejected and that the
union should pr¢xeed as previousty deoded.
The Kirk Se$sc￿$ of both corKJregation$ agreed the Basis of Union. Congregational voles
were taken in vthich the congregation of Rothesay Trinty narrc￿Y rejected the basis of union.
The Presbytery of ￿gY11 decided to intervene using powers granted in the Presby1ery Mission
Planning Act and 1 November 2023 unanimously d￿"ded to implement the Presbytery
Mission Han for Bute lo secure the union of the congregations no later than 1 July 2024
to form the Isle of BLrte Parish Church.

6. Worship and Organisations
li) The Church of Scthand is Trinitarian in dcthrÈ, Refom*d in tradition and Presbylerian
in polty. It exists to glorify God and to work for the advancement of Chrisfs Kingdom
throughout the wodd. As a nakn'onal Church, it acknovledges a distinctive call and duty to bring
the ordinances of rdigion lo the people in every parish of Scodand through a territorial ministry.
It cO￿perate5 wrth other Churches in various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond.
lil) The United Church of Bute worships ￿ SurKlays at 11am.
lili) From 22￿$ March 2020 onwards the churth has prowded a streamed semce online by
way of a YouTube channel now organised by the Mission & Outreach Convener. This is
supported by the Organist and indudes regular contributK)ns from members of the
congregation's worship teams. This has proved popular wrth up to 75 people viewng each
week from the Island of Bute and the wder worfd.
liv) There are branches of ￿ Guikl: a Pass-ft-on Group", a Str￿￿rs & Striders group;
and a Fundraising Committee which arranges events throughout the year. At all times these
groups seek to implement the ViS￿n Statement (given in para 1. atr￿ve).

7. Financial Review
The principal SoUr￿S of income were Free Will Offerings. Open Plate Offerings and Standing
Order donations. The total from these for 2022 was £46.053 plus £8.824 recoverable from
HMRC for tax relief on Grft Aided donations. In addition, there was hall rental income of £8,798.
Traceable Trustee donations, included in the offering r￿ures, amunted to £16,254 lexcluding
Gift Aid tax reliefj -
No legaaes were re￿Ved in 2023.
There remained a number of members who continue to follow the online services as they had
not felt able to retum to in•erson mcffjing worship. In ADril the congregats'on were provided
with the opportunity to send their offerings by cheque directly to the Treasurer or pay by bank
transfer. This resulted in a generous response. Trre is a link fr￿ our website lo the Church

Throughout the year there were various fundraising events for general and restricted Church
funds as well as retirirvJ offenrvJs arNJ the Jars of Grace appeal for Third Parties.
The day to day working current account is hekl in the Bank of Scotland, Rothesay. The
Campbell Bequest fun<ts are mainly in a Deposrt Account with the Church of Scotland
Inve$tor$' Trust ￿￿th a small Sum held in the Bank of S¢odand, Rothesay. The Trust funds are
held in our Current account. while Trust ¢aFytal 1$ invested in the Church of Scoland
Investors, Trust Gro%th Fund.
A monthly written ffinan￿al repcrt is pyovided to the Trustees and Teviewed at Kirk Session
meetings which are nonnalty held bi-monthly. and this infomiatbon is available to any member
of the congregation throUgh￿t the year.
At the end of the year the Church hdd £60.142 (2022: £53.051) unrestricted funds. £5.178
12022: £6.215) of whith was de%gnated for iknn Funds and represents the net bcok value
of the organ. £12,946 12022.. £12,547) designated funds were made up of The Campbell
Bequest and Youth funds {fomier Boys Brigade Company). £4,558 (2022.. £5,587) designated
funds were made up of The Aflemoon Guild. Lighthouse, The Evening Guild and Pass-It-On
funds, collectively known as gr￿PS. £1.03512022= £1,035) designated funds were made up
of the Renfrew Bequest and £12,000 12022: £12,CKIO) were made up of the Christina Reed
Legacy. The remaining £24.42512022: £15.667) made up the General Fund.
During 2015, a property inspectK)n was carried rxrt on the corvJregats'on's buildiros on ￿hafrf
of the Presbytery of Arg￿1. whith identrfied significanl work required on the external harling of
the listed 18th century sanctuary. Adwce from The General Trustees ofthe Church of Scotland
15 that while the w¢Jrks referred to will necessarily require to be carried out over a peri¢Jd of
years. this timescale should not have a materially detrimental effect on undertying fabric
of the buildings.

7. Financial Review (continued)
The Trustees hope and expect that finanryal assistance will be forthcomirwJ fr￿n the
General Trustees of the Church of ScotlarKI and other bcdies. Athough everything was
delayed by the pandemic, an architect was apwinted, and tenders prepared. The tender
reFQrt received at the end of 2021 was discouraging in terms of the pri￿5 quoted shwng
a 67% increase fr￿n the original costr.ngs in 2018. This rewesented an increase of around
£50,000 in the amount required. While KlentiFication of further sources of funding continues.
it only became possible to consider restarting this project wth the final decision to foryn the
Isle of Bule Pansh Church in 2024. The Restri(aed Fabric Fund {Harfingl stc4)d at £34.913.
These funds have the benefit of being exempt from assessment for Giving to Grow
Contribution.
The Church also held £21.85112022." £25.862) ofrestn'ded fundswhich have been provided
for the purp)ses speerf￿d in Note 16.
With the fomation of the Isle of Bute Parish Church there wll be only one Minister living in the
Rothesay Trinity manse. The UCB manse, which is too large and energy inefficient, is being
sold. This was agreed by Argyll Presbytery and the Churth of Scotland General Trustees. At
the end of 2023 the manse was under offer. The sale went through on 28° FebNary 2024.
Funds received will be held by the General Trustees on behatf of the Congregation.
8. Roserves Policy
The tnjslees, policy is to maintain reserves at around 2-3 mc￿thS of norn￿1 running costs
in order to meet commthents aThJ to cover any unexpected expenditure. At current levels
of expenditwe this equates lo tetsveen £11,gJ3 and £17.854. General. unrestricted.
undesignated reserves at the end ofthe year were £24.425. whith is wrthin the target range.
The charity aims to increase the unrestrided reserves to the target level in the short to
medium lem future.

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023, which are set
out on pages 7 to 18.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The tharity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with
the temis of the Chartties and Trustee Investment Iscotlandl Ad 2005 and the Charities
ACc￿ntS (Scotland) RegUlati￿S 201￿.
The chanty trustees COn￿der that the audrt requirement of RegUlat￿n 10(1 } la) to (c) of the
Accounts Regulatsons does not apply. It is my respK￿$i￿I"lity to examine the accounts as
required under section 4411) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come
to my attention.
Ba$1$ of indèpendent examiner's statoment
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts
(Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a reV￿W of the accounting records
kept by the chanty and a comparison of the acwunts presented with those records. It also
includes consideration of any unusual items or discbsures in the accounts, and seeks
explanations from the tntstees conceming any such matters. The procedures undertaken do
not provide all the evKlence that would be required in an audi( arKI conSeqUen￿Y I do not
express an audit opinion on the view given by the ￿(￿nts.

Financial ReForting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Irdand {FRS 1021 the Charities
and Trustee Investment {ScoUand} Act 2005 aTrJ the Chariti'es Accounts (Scotlandl Regulations

The financial statements are prepared in stedirKJ, which is the functional currency of the charity.

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the tharity's abilty to wntinue

Unrestricted income funds comprise those fijnds trustees are free to use for any purpose
in furtherance of the charitable objects. Unrestricted funds include desunated fijnds there the
trustees, at their discretw)n, have created funds for specffic purposes.
Restricted funds are funds vthich are to be used in aceoTdance with specthc ￿trI￿￿on$ imp)sed by
the don￿ or trust deed.

Income is recognised once the charity has entitlement to the inrxjme, there is sufficient certainty of
receipt and so rt is probable that the Ir￿Me will be received. and the wnwnt of income receivable
can be measured reliably.

Interest on fvnds held on deposit is induded upon notrFication of the interest paid or payable by the
bank. Dividends are recognised once the dividend has been dedared and notification has been
received of the dividend due. This is nomialty upon notifieation by our investment advisor of the
dividend yield of investrnent P￿￿cli0.
Idl Expenditure r•coonition
Liabilrties are recc4Jnised as expenditure as scon as there is a legal or constructive obligation
committing the tharity to that exFendrture. rt is probable that settlement will be required and the
amount of the olJigati¢)n can be measured rella1￿y.
AJI expenditure is accounted for on ￿ accruals basis. The costs of raising funds consist of
miscellaneous expenses in relation to Aftemc*Jn and Evening Guild events held and the expenditure
on charitable activities includes costs associated with Ministries & Missions and the running costs of
the church building together wrth govemance costs. There are no support costs.

Irrecoverable VAT is charged as a Cost against the activity for which the expenditure ts incurred.

maintenance of these assets is charged as resources expended in the statement of financial

AJI gains and losses are tsken to the Statement of Financial Actiwties as they arise. Realised gains
and losses on lnveStrr￿nts are calculated as the difference between the sales proceeds and their
opening carrying value or their Purd￿Se value rf acquired subsequent to the first day of the financial
year. Unrealised gains and losses are ealcJJlated as the drfference between the fair value at the year
end and their carying value. Realised arml unrealised gains and losses are combined in the
statement of Financial Activities

The United Church of BLrte is a tharity wrthin the meaning of Paragaph 1 Schedule 6 of the Finance
Ad 2010. Accordingly, the charity is potentially exempt fri)m tsxation in respect of income or capital
gains received wthin &itegories Covered in Chapter 3 of Part 11 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010
and section 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the exlent that such income or
gains are appl￿ for Chariti*￿ purposes onty.

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the setmement amount due after any trade discount
offered. PrepayTnents are valued at the ar￿Unt prepaid net of any trade discounts due.
