## **Appointment of Trustees**
Trustees are appointed by General Meeting for Scotland, Northumbria Area Meeting and Teesdale & Cleveland Area Meeting (the successor bodies to Durham General Meeting) and Cumberland Area Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), or their successor bodies, in accordance with our governing Deed of Trust. Trustees are normally appointed for a period of three years and may be reappointed for a second term. There must always be between 4 and 8 Trustees.
Under the terms of the Deed of Trust, it is not required that the Treasurer of the Trust be a Trustee, and the Trustees may co-opt a Treasurer from outside the body of Trustees.
## **Constitution**
The charity is a Scottish Charitable Trust governed by a Deed of Trust registered in the Books of the Lords of the Council and Session on 20 March 2000.
Trustees are appointed as described above. The operation of the Trust and the Trustees is overseen by one of the appointing Area / General Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (referred to as the Sponsoring AM/GM) on a three-year rotating basis. The Clerk

to the Trustees will always come from the Sponsoring AM/GM. The Sponsoring group during the period to which this report relates is Scotland General Meeting.
## **Purposes of the Charity**
The purposes of the charity are to promote and advance the spiritual nurture and religious education of the community and of young people and others within the Quaker tradition, and in furtherance therefore:
- i) To organise and promote annual events for the spiritual and moral benefit of the Community;
- ii) To disseminate by whatever means the ideals of truth, non-violence and equality within a spiritual background.

## **Transition to new SCIO**
In 2022 we applied to be a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). The SCIO has been set up to replace Northern Friends Youth Events Scottish Charitable Trust, SC029949. We intend that Northern Friends Youth Events Scottish Charitable Trust, SC029949 will be wound up and the assets and liabilities transferred to Northern Friends Youth Events SCIO, SC051778.
The SCIO was registered on 8 June 2022 and the Trustees officially agreed to move all activities to the new SCIO on 26th November 2022. Winding up of the Trust was put back to 2023 due to delays in opening and closing bank accounts.
## **Summer Shindig 2023**
We held Summer Shindig at Ackworth School, Yorkshire, from Saturday 31[st] July to Saturday 7[th] August. were Clerk and Assistant Clerk respectively. shared the coordinator role and also acted as Safeguarding Coordinator.
The theme for the event was ‘making connections’ which informed activities throughout the week, centering on the community sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday which were all successful and well received. This was in no small part due to differing

approaches to delivery and how speakers connected their sessions to the following discussion groups.
The first speakers shared the story of their lives using the analogy of a tree. Their strict Christian upbringing and lives within the rigid rules of their religious communities, which culminated in relationship breakdowns upon realising their sexualities was delivered in a humorous and well balanced way which was accessible to all.
The second speaker, a local Quaker Youth Development Officer, looked at all our connections to Shindig and Quakerism, and when and how they had occurred. They got the YP’s to consider the difference between what brought them to Quakerism and what keeps them in Quakerism. The talk finished with YPs sharing what lows and highs they had experienced, with one YP noticing the variety of lows people experience, and the similarities of people’s highs.
The final speaker was from the charity FOSS, who befriends refugees, asylum seekers and settlers to Scotland. They ran an activity where small groups considered what small list of things they would choose to take if they were having to escape and become a refugee. This brought about much discussion about priorities.
The event was attended by 16 volunteer staff and 49 young people. This was less than previous years, and was in addition to a high proportion of first timers of many ages, and a large number of YPs with additional support needs.
The main staff training was conducted at the end of June 2022, 5 weeks ahead of the event. The clerking/coordinating team put in place excellent systems and support for the staff team which provided a strong framework for the whole staff to best support those YP and each other. This included processes to develop an understanding of YP needs prior to the event (in discussion with parents) and the provision of training sessions and resources for the staff team. These helped build confidence and outline effective strategies to support YPs.
The Trustees thanks the Clerking team for all the effort and dedication to ensure a highly successful event.
## **Notes to the Accounts**
- i) From time to time the charity has benefited from legacies, funds from other Trusts or substantial donations from supportive Friends. These account for the reserves of £23,850.06 held in the Ecology Building Society. These reserves are not restricted, but by the agreement of the Trustees they may be drawn upon for the purchase of major equipment to be used for the benefit of the annual summer event, and the interest

contributes to bursary support to assist some of the young people to attend the event.
- Fees for 2022 remained the same as since 2018. These were set at £330/£300 (first/subsequent family member). Bursaries were awarded from the Trust funds to 23 young people with a total value of £1,385.00.
- ii) No remuneration was paid to a Trustee nor anyone connected to a Trustee.
iii) One Trustee was reimbursed £64.80 for travel to a Trustees' meeting. This was at the HMRC mileage rate.
