REPORT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The Board of Trustees are delighted to rrfesent their annual rewt and financial statements of the charity
for the year ended 30 June 2024. The financial statements have been prepared in ac￿rdanCe with th8
accounting policies set out in note 1 to the accounts and compty with the Charilies and Trustee Investment
(Scotland) Act 2005. the Chartties Accounts (Scoliand) Regulations 2¢)06 (as amended) and Accounting
and Reporting by Chartties.. Staternent of Recommended practi￿ applicab￿ to charities preparing their
accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard FRS102 Section 1A and the Charities
SORP (FRS102)
STRUCTURE GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
The Association is govemed by its Constitutson vthich was last updated in May 2016. The political
leadership ofthe AS￿￿allOn is made up of 3 Fuikfime Offi￿rS, elected annualty and limited to a maximum
of 2, 1-year temis. The Association is membershipkd and the democratic structure is set out in our
Constitutron. The charity is govemed by a Board of Trustees made up of the 3 Full-Time Offi￿rS, 2 current
Student Trustees, and 3 ExtemallLay Trustees. Only the 3 full-time offi￿15 are remunerated, with the
other Trustees being volunteers and the Board ordinarity meets 4 times per year. The Association employs
small group of stsff induding the Director vtho line manages the other staff and reports to the Board of
Trustees. The Director i8 responsible for the operational management of the Associalion as well as
rep)rting on the progress against agreed Strategic Obieciives. Staff salaries are set in line wtth agreed
Scotlan&wide College support staff pay scaks. FulkTune Officer salaries are set by benthmarking against
other Scottish Studerrts, Associations.

The Students. Assoctation's President and Preshlents were during March 2023 for the
2023124 session and took up post on 1° July 2023. In 2017. the Association agreed to change the way in
vthich we supwrted the Y￿rk of the Fulkrime Offiors (FTOS). moving away from fornal. elected volunteer
offi(trs, wtth speciffic remits, to a more infom)al group of volunteers for each task or activty. This has
meant that student volunteeryJ do not need to go through the process of elections to get invofved V￿th
actNities and has meant that they are able to p￿k and choose which parts they want to take more
leadership on. irnproving our engagement with st￿.

for the personal development of our students.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Introductlon from the Presldenl Chalr of the Board of Trustees
The past tsvo years as an etethd Fulktime Student Officer have been one the most incredible and testing
experiences of rny life. BuildirvJ a Students, Associakn and student engagement back after what felt like
an etemity of isolation, onty to be faC￿j wÉth lecturer strikes and a cost-of-INing crisis.
Despite all of tL I'm very proud to present our Report for 2023-2024 detailing all of our activty and
achievements throughout this year. l think it is important to highlight just htr￿ small our Students.
Association team is before reading this repo￿ wrth a small, ￿ mvJhty team of seven people consisting
of three officers, three fvll-time staff and our Director. have been able to cover all four cam￿￿ and
represent 25,000 students as well as working on commtitees. prcfjects and partnerships across the ¢ollege.
the sector, and the county. When you read thks report with that in mind. you truty see the In￿edIble impact
we are able to have, despite our stze.
I had never seen myself as a career woman unti I started at EC Students. Association and I had a￿ayS
been told that my strengths were in speaking and having an opinK)n. Well. it tums out that you can make
a career out of thatl We have had a year of attending protests. conferences. hosting wellbeing events and
my personal favourite, bringing peop￿ together.
We are so incredibly proud of the relalionship work that have fr￿S￿￿ on over the past year. Building.
not onty a stronger relationship between the Board of Management, Senior Management Team, and the
Stud8nts' Assoaation, but ueating transparent and direct lines beiween peopk at the top of the College
and students on the ground.

1. Reverse Shadowing vlth the Board of Management
We'va welcomed Edinburgh College's Board Mernbers toioin us for the day. inviting them to gain new
perspectives on the real-life student experien￿ at Edinburgh Colb3e.
2. Clubs & Societies Launched
We launched several Clubs & So¢ietses to provide students with a chance to soaalise. Tabletop
Games club, WKleo Games club and our LGBTQ+ soc*ty have s8en regular engagement on Sighthill,
Milton Road and Granton.
3. Wellbeing Fairs
This y8arfs Wellbeing Fairs have been byger and better than ever, takng place on our largest
mpuses and involving more than 20 extemal partners and chafities from acr<￿ Ediniwrgh and
beyond.
4. Awareness Days
W8're commttted to spmding the word about key w4Mreness days throughout the year arKI have Tun
stalls across the college to mark causes as dp4erse as LGBT+ History Month. Anti-Bultying WeeK
Intsmational Women's Day. Earth Day. and Mental Healih Avrdreness Vleek.
5. Compebbve Student Electior
At this yearfs Student Elections, every position was contested. and it vras the second hwJhest voter
tumout on record, with 1084 students having their say on who should lead their Students. Associalion
next. We're excited to te working wtth
6. Everrts During the Holidays
For the first time ever. we decided to ty oui full days of activibes for students during the ho1￿jays. We
started wtth VKleo Games Day in February Break. and foll0v￿1 up with another day of uafting and
gaming in the Easter holidays. Students were fUe￿d up V￿th pizza and 9ocrfJ company.
7. Freshers. Fars
In earty Septefflber, we held our firstfijlkscale Freshers. Fairs since 2019, with lots of extémal partners
coming in to share goodies V￿th students. and stsrt the twm a bang.

8. New Trustee Board
This year saw our new members of our Board of Trustees take to their roles fulty. We welcomed
expertise from across the sector three new extemal trustees, vthitst remaining student-led wtth
the appointment of two new student trustees, joining our elected fulktime officers and working
alongside our ￿anent staff team.
9. Protests and RallEs
Our student officer tea
spoke up for St￿lents at numerous protests and rallies
this year, from the NUS Stop the Cuts Ralty to Trans Ryhts protests at the S¢ottish Parftament, as
well as campaigning for continued counsellir¥J SUPFQrt on campus.
10. Class Rep Engagement & SttNJent Life Survey
Engagement V•ith our Class Rep communty has gone from strength to strength this year. with Reps
getting involved in additional opportunities, such as focus groups, Education Scotland vistts, and
encouraging others to complete our Student Life Survey, whth had 629 resp)nses.
A big thank you too goes to our newty established Board of Trustees, helping to guide us to our next
iteration and setting us on course wtth a new Strategic Plan. We're also grateful to all of our partners from
across the college. the sector. and beyond, tho have worked ¥￿th us this year.
Particular thanks to the continued, vital support arKI genuinely positive wo￿ng relationship we have with
the Development Trust, College Senior Management Team. and Board of Management. We are unique in
the sector for how we operate, and our partnership approach and muiual resFect for each otherfs. roles
and actNitses is the rockthat we build upon. The fuiure is far from ￿rtaIn, but nothing can stop our pot8ntial
for making a difference to the Iiv8s of students rf maintain solKI partnership.

BOARD RESPONSIBILrriES
Charity law r￿UireS the Board to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true
and fair view of the state of affairs of the Union and of the surplus or deficit for that year. In preparing the
financial statements the Board is required to select suitable accounting policies, as described on page 17.
and then appty them on a consistent basis. observe the methcrtjs and prinriples in the applicable Charities
SORP, make judgements and estimates that are prudent and reasonable and state whether applicable
accounting standards have been followed. subject to any material departures disd05ed and explained in
the financial statements. The Board must also prepare the financial ststements on the going concem
basis unl8SS it is inappropriate to FKesume that the Union will continue to owate.
The Board is reSponsi￿e for keeping accounting records which disclose, with reasonab￿ acrJJracy. at any
time, the financial postbon of the Union and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply
wtth the Charity Accounts (Scottand) Regulations 2006 (as amend&J). It is also responsible for

FINANCIAL REVIEW
The Assocration's main furKliw comes from Edinburgh Coll8g8. This funding now treated by Edinburgh
College as being c¢>teminus *ryth its own finanaal year of1 August to 31 July. Until 2019 funding re￿1Ved
from Edinburgh College was made in line *ryth the Associthn's finan¢xal year of 1 July to 30 June.
The financial statements shoukl be read in conjunction with the related notes which appear on pages 14
to 21. and these have been prepared in accordan￿ *ith the Financtal Reporting StaThJard FRS102 1A
and the Charities SORP (FRS102) and relevant kw.
The charit<s actvitss in the year resulted in a deficit of £30.825 of unrestricted funds whtch added tr>
unrestricted reserves Ixought forward at 1 Juty 2023 gives unrestricied reserve5 of £71.256 available to
be carried forward into the new financial year to be used. in accordance wtth the ConstibJtion, in
furtherance of th8 Ot48Ctives and ac11vil￿S of lh8 Sknl8nts' Ass0(x￿.
In the year the charty received £nil furKling thich vms restricted. Financial details of income and
expenditure for the projects carried on during the year can be found at note 10 within the Noles to the
Accounts. At Juty 2024 £31,927 (2023 - £31,927) was carrvj foiward into the new financial year to be
used in accordance with the objectives of the Climate Challenge Fund and is not available for general
purposes.
Reserves Policy
E&SA aspire to build up a level of unrestrided reserves equNalent to three months operating costs for the
Association. At 2023124 levels. this will equats to £70.c￿0. These reserves are to peThit the Asswiation
to ensure tt able to m8et its finanaal oblvjations at all times of the year to enable the organisation
to be wound up appropriately. shoukl the need ever arise. Reserves wll accrue from Small budgeted
surpluses annualty, plus any underspend against annual income. Once the level of reserves has been
reached, any subsequent surplus monies will be used to futKI projects and other one-off 6xpendttur8 as
approved by the Association Director arKI or the Board. depending on the level.

The finanoial statements have been prepared in accordance wilh Accounting and Reporting by
Charities: Ststement of Recommended Practice applicable to chartlies preparing their accounts in
accordan￿ wf(h the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Irefand (FRS
102) 1A, the Charities SORP (FRS 102), taking advantage of the exemptions applicable for small
charities, the Charities arKJ Trustee Investment (Scotland) Art 2005 and the Charities Accounts
(Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).

ECSA staff are included in the Local Govemment Pension ScheffK8 (LGPS) run by Edinburgh
College. This is a defined benefft scheme kyoviding b￿efft$ based on final pensionable pay.
The assets and liabilitses of the scheme are hekj separatety from thc6e of Edinburgh College.
Additional infomiation in relation to the LGPS is available wtthin the a¢o)unts of Edinburgh
College. Contributions payable to the pension stheme by ECSA are charged to the Statement
of Financial Actrrfities in these accounts in the period to vknich they relate.

Unrestricted fvnds are grants or other incomiNJ resources receivable or generat8J for the
objects of the charity without further speufic purp)ses and are available as general funds.
Restricted funds are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor. Expenditur8
which meets these rrriteria is charged to the restricted fuThJs.
2 GOING CONCERN
The Association is dependent on the conttnued financial support of Edinburgh College. The
accounts have been prepared on a going concem basis on the assumption thatffinancial support
viill be made available by the colbJe until at least twefve months from the date on which thes8

16 RELATED PARTY TRANSACTIONS
The Assoaation's main source of funding from Ednburgh College is subj￿1 to conditions as stated in the
Constitution. and the grant avrdrded in this financial year VRS £282.958 (2023 - £257.866).
At 30 June 2024, a balance of £101,983 was due to the Association from Edinburgh Col*e in respect of
grant funding, and is included within debtors (Note 13) (2023- £138.001). Subsequent to the year end this
amount has been ￿ved.
The Assoaation OC￿pieS a room at 8ach of the four campus locations on a Mt-free basis, under an
infomal licen￿, subject to the Union maintaining the rooms in a good state of repair. The Association
vmuld not seek to rent commercial premises rf these rooms v￿e not available on campus and so th8
donation of these facilits'es És not quantified in the accounts.
The Trustees of the Associalion are the members of the Board as previojsly listed on page 3. The Full
Time Officers of the Board r￿1ve remuneration for services as provided for within the Constitution. The
aggregate amourrt payable under such contracts in the year vras £90.594 (2023 - £79,210).
