The charity was set up to maintain and develop, for the enjoyment and education of the public, the garden established in the 1960s by the Drs Neil, being on a site of some 2 and 1/2 acre adjoining Duddingston Loch together with the Historic Thomson Tower situated at the foot of the garden. The aim is to provide a place of beauty of tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh. The charity employs a full time gardener who, with the assistance of volunteers, some with vulnerabilities, maintain the planting and the hard landscaping and propagate plants for sale to support the work of the charity. The gardener also conducts groups - adults and children - around the garden and organises workshops and other horticultural and educational events. The Tower provides a venue for exhibitions by local artists, photographers, sculptors, jewellers and potters.
