The Teaching of Scottish Country Dancing
RSCDS Dunfermline Branch provides a range of classes to encourage the learning of Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) and its dances. Each class is taught by a fully qualified RSCDS teacher. In some instances, a trainee teacher may teach a class while supervised by a qualified teacher, as part of the Branch commitment to providing opportunities to the SCD teachers of the future.
– General Class (September 24 May 25)
In an effort to attract and keep new members, and following feedback from last year’s class, it was decided to
-
substantially reduce member’s class cost by offering a yearly or half yearly branch class fee option.
-
To encourage beginners to return after the first free night an option to pay per 4-week block.
-
• So as beginners could be encouraged to meet and dance with the more experienced dancers the teachers were rotated - Alison Austin has been teaching beginners while Amy Drysdale and Bill Austin shared teaching of the main class.
-
The Branch was able to move to a new hall, Abbeyview, still with two separate rooms, but with no surround carpet and better kitchen facilities. We had a small number of regulars unable to come but our huge numbers of new beginners made up for that.
The class moved to Abbeyview on 21/10/24 and the move has proved successful.

Promoting the Enjoyment of Scottish Country Dancing and Music

In December 2024, the Branch hosted their Annual Ball in the Glen Pavilion, pictured at the start. The meal provided by the Glen Pavilion was delicious, the dance programme with music provided by Jim
In March 2025 the Branch celebrated the visit of 40 Ribble Valley dancers to Dunfermline with a dance. Super music was provided by Nicol Maclaren.

In April this year, the Branch hosted their first ever weekend event. Fifty dancers congregated to enjoy two great nights of dancing on Mull with music provided by Phill Jones. Alison Austin and Margo Priestley presided over the Saturday morning class at which we were taught some new dances.

Though a small Branch, members attend a range of events outside Dunfermline. Alison Austin, Bill Austin and Amy Drysdale teach a variety of well-known and unusual dances to prepare us for nearby dance events (e.g. Edinburgh or Stirling or Perth). This means Dunfermline dancers are kept up to date with the latest favourites, and allows the Branch to advertise its events, personally to other clubs.
Ongoing Projects to Further the Objects of the Branch
Trustee (Branch Committee) Meetings
The Branch Committee meet two-monthly, scheduled throughout the financial year.
Data Protection
The Branch continues to remain compliant with the DPA2018, and data protection remains a standing item on Branch Committee agendas.
Safeguarding and Child Protection
All trustees of the Branch plus the children’s class teachers and assistants are PVG-checked in line with Disclosure Scotland guidance, and the Safeguarding policy with associated procedures is promoted on the Branch website.
Advertising
Advertising takes place through a range of media, including newsletters, newspapers, social media and posters in the local area.
- - Branch E Newsletter, and E mail
The Branch produces an electronic newsletter for members and friends, highlighting what events are happening in Dunfermline and news items of interest.
In line with the Data Protection Act 2018, the Branch has always implemented an ‘opt-in’ approach to its general enewsletter distribution, requiring specific consent from all recipients prior to sending.
In addition, a separate email is sent only to Branch members, when it is appropriate, which includes information essential to their ongoing membership of the Branch.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Dunfermline
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2025 which are set out on pages 3 and 4.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner’s statement
-
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met, or
- To which in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
