Within this context Traquair has a Green Policy and action plan which is updated annually. We have several projects within the grounds that we are currently looking to progress:
-
a) Forest Garden and environmental education project
- We currently have 15 allotments and in the adjacent area we are planning a forest garden. A community group is coming together and is putting forward a plan to attract funding. We would like to appoint a project manager to oversee this project and identify educational opportunities in the garden and wider grounds.
-
b) Growing and use of produce
- We are currently using a polytunnel to a limited extent but planning to manage more effectively as well as to make better use of abundant fruit and berries that grow in the grounds.
-
c) Restoration of Heather Hut Our heather hut (A Listed) is in need of repair and we are currently obtaining quotes for its restoration. It could potentially be used for training in heritage skills and it is an important building to keep intact.
-
(iii) Continuing to foster positive engagement with our local community
-
Traquair is committed to a social agenda through liaison with the local community, local councils and working with local businesses. Projects such as the Traquair footpath have created excellent relations with Innerleithen and these should be strengthened and developed.

Strong engagement with local tourism businesses through the Tweed Valley Tourism BID. We have a commitment to sourcing locally as far as possible good and services.
-
Traquair is also engaged with other historic house attractions locally and nationally with CMS a leading member on the executive of both groups.
Local engagement is particularly important for future projects such as housing or if a bike park is to go ahead in the future.
- (iv) A sustainable business model Critical to the future of Traquair is financial sustainability which underpins all the charitable aims and objectives. In times of future austerity it is more important than ever that the Trust remains on a sound financial footing.
House opening, shops, cafe and visitor activities are balanced with spend from weddings, corporate events and accommodation which has become an increasingly important income generator.
Following successful planning approval a glamping project with 3 bespoke units is progressing which will provide an additional income stream for the Trust.

Trustees and Governance

We plan to continue this model as well as drawing on outside expertise where needed and recruiting new trustees to ensure we have a good governance structure for the future. We plan to investigate the potential of setting up an advisory board.
Key performance indicators
We continue to monitor visitor numbers and income generated from the various trading activities associated with the house opening.
In 2024 visitor numbers were down by 8% and there was a decrease in group business that reflects a general trend in smaller group sizes. Total visitor numbers inclusive of wedding, events etc are approx. 27,000. However, the house continues to see a marked increase in its income from other activities such as weddings and accommodation. Wedding business was up by 50% in 2024 and accommodation by 6%.

The Trustees believe that the portfolio performance against the benchmark remains satisfactory in light of current market conditions and recognise that the market value is now more than the historical cost of the investments by £26,401. Currently £10,000 per annum is being withdrawn from the portfolio to cover some of the Trust's expenses with a total of £240,000 having been withdrawn over the lifetime of the investment.

The Trustees are satisfied with the performance during the year.

The Gift Shop and Malt Loft turnover both improved their performance; Shop income by 6% and Malt Loft by 3%.
The Cafe experienced a challenging year in terms of staffing and consequently this impacted our reputation negatively at the start of the year and loss of local business although this recovered later in the year the loss made was £35,804.

Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable Jaw and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
The law applicable to charities in Scotland requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Trust and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the Trust for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:
select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles in the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice;
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume the Trust will continue in operation.

Traquair House Charitable Trust
Independent auditor's report
To the trustees ofTraquair House Charitable Trust
Opinion
We have audited the financial statements of Traquair House Charitable Trust for the year ended 31 October 2024 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet, and notes to the financial statements, including a summary of significant accounting policies. The financial reporting framework that has been applied in their preparation is applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards, including FRS 102 The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
In our opinion, the financial statements:
give a true and fair view of the state of the group's and parent charity's affairs as at 31 October 2024, and of the group's and parent charity's incoming resources and application of resources, including its income and expenditure, for the year then ended;
have been properly prepared in accordance with United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice; and
have been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and regulation 6 and 8 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).
Basis for opinion
We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (UK) (ISAs (UK)) and applicable law. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements section of our report. We are independent of the Trust in accordance with the ethical requirements that are relevant to our audit of the financial statements in the UK, including the FRC's Ethical Standard, and we have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with these requirements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.
Conclusions relating to going concern
In auditing the financial statements, we have concluded that the trustees' use of the going concern basis of accounting in the preparation of the financial statements is appropriate.
Based on the work we have performed, we have not identified any material uncertainties relating to events or conditions that, individually or collectively, may cast significant doubt on the trust's ability to continue as a going concern for a period of at least twelve months from when the financial statements are authorised for issue.
Our responsibilities and the responsibilities of the Trustees with respect to going concern are described in the relevant sections of this report.
Other information
The other information comprises the information included in the Trustees' Report, other than the financial statements and our auditor's report thereon. The Trustees are responsible for the other information. Our opinion on the financial statements does not cover the other information and, except to the extent otherwise explicitly stated in our report, we do not express any form of assurance conclusion thereon.
Our responsibility is to read the other information and, in doing so, consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the financial statements, or our knowledge obtained in the course of the audit or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. Ifwe identify such material inconsistencies or apparent material misstatements, we are required to determine whether this gives rise to a material misstatement in the financial statements or a material misstatement of the other information. If, based on the work we have performed, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact.

Traquair House Charitable Trust
Independent auditor's report (continued) To the trustees ofTraquair House Charitable Trust
We have nothing to report in this regard.
Matters on which we are required to report by exception
We have nothing to report in respect of the following matters in relation to which the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) require us to report to you if, in our opinion:
the information given in the financial statements is inconsistent in any material respect with the trustees' report; or
proper accounting records have not been kept; or
the financial statements are not in agreement with the accounting records; or
we have not received all the information and explanations we require for our audit.
Responsibilities of Trustees
As explained more fully in the Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities, the trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements and for being satisfied that they give a true and fair view, and for such internal control as the Trustees determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
In preparing the financial statements, the trustees are responsible for assessing the trust's ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the Trustees either intend to liquidate the trust or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so.
Auditor's responsibilities for the audit of the financial statements
We have been appointed as auditor under section 44(1) (c) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and report in accordance with regulations made under that Act.
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor's report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with ISAs (UK) will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of these financial statements.
Irregularities, including fraud, are instances of non-compliance with laws and regulations. We design procedures in line with our responsibilities, outlined above, to detect material misstatements in respect of irregularities, including fraud. The specific procedures for this engagement and the extent to which these are capable of detecting irregularities, including fraud is detailed below:
Enquiry of management, those charged with governance around actual and potential litigation and claims;
Enquiry of entity staff in compliance functions to identify any instances of non-compliance with laws and regulations;
Performing audit work over the risk of management override of controls, including testing of journal entries and other adjustments for appropriateness, evaluating the business rationale of significant transactions outside the normal course of business and reviewing accounting estimates for bias; Reviewing minutes of meetings of those charged with governance;
Reviewing financial statement disclosures and testing to supporting documentation to assess compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Traquair House Charitable Trust
Independent auditor's report (continued)
To the trustees ofTraquair House Charitable Trust
Because of the inherent limitations of an audit, there is a risk that we will not detect all irregularities, including those leading to a material misstatement in the financial statements or non-compliance with regulation. This risk increases the more that compliance with a law or regulation is removed from the events and transactions reflected in the financial statements, as we will be less likely to become aware of instances of non-compliance. The risk is also greater regarding irregularities occurring due to fraud rather than error; as fraud involves intentional concealment, forgery, collusion, omission or misrepresentation.
A further description of our responsibilities is available on the Financial Reporting Council's website at: https://www.frc.org.uk/Our-Work/Audit/Audit-and-assurance/Standards-and-guidance/Standards-andguidance-for-auditors/Auditors-responsibilities-for-audit/Description-of-auditors-responsibilities-foraudit.aspx. This description forms part of our auditor's report.
Use of report
This report is made solely to the trust's Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Section 44 (1) (c) of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and Regulation 10 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). Our audit work has been undertaken so that we might state to the trust's Trustees those matters we are required to state to them in an auditor's report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the Trust and the trust's Trustees as a body, for our audit work, for this report, or for the opinions we have formed.

The group consists ofTraquair House Charitable Trust and all of its subsidiaries.
1.1 Accounting convention
The accounts (financial statements) have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) issued on 1 January 2019 and the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).
The Trust constitutes a public benefit entity as defined by FRS 102.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the company. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest£.
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include freehold land and buildings, investment properties and certain financial instruments at fair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.
1.2 Going concern
At the ti c cf :1pp :J'.':!'!g the fi!'!?.!'.ci?.l stc1_tl:'ml:'nt<;, thP Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the Trust has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the Trustees continue to adopt that going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.
1.3 Basis of consolidation
The group financial statements incorporate those of Traquair House Charitable Trust and all of its subsidiaries (i.e. entities that the group controls through its power to govern the financial and operating policies so as to obtain economic benefits).
All financial statements are made up to 31 October 2024. Where necessary, adjustments are made to the financial statements of subsidiaries to bring the accounting policies used into line with those used by other members of the group.
All intra-group transactions, balances and unrealised gains on transactions between group companies are eliminated on consolidation. Unrealised losses are also eliminated unless the transaction provides evidence of an impairment of the asset transferred.
1.4 Donations and endowments
Donations are included in the year in which they are received which is when the charity becomes entitled to the resource.
1.5 Grants
Grants, where entitlement is not conditional on the delivery of a specific performance by the charity, are recognised when the charity becomes unconditionally entitled to the grant. Grants within the trading subsidiaries towards capital expenditure are credited to deferred revenue and are released to the consolidated statement of financial activities over the expected useful life of the assets.

1.6 Carbon credits
Carbon credits received are deferred and will be released to the SOFA once the Pending Issuance Units are converted to Woodland Carbon Units, based on the number of units verified.
1.7 Investment income and rental income
Income from investments is included in the SOFA in the year in which it is receivable. Rental and sporting income received in advance is deferred until the criteria for income recognition are met.
1.8 Income from house opening and events at Traquair House
Income represents amounts receivable for goods and services net of VAT and trade discounts.
1.9 Expenditure
All expenditure is included on an accruals basis. All costs have been directly attributed to one of the functional categories of resources expended in the SOFA as follows: -
Raising funds: These are costs directly attributable to the running of the Traquair Estate including property letting, sporting and the operation of the shop, malt loft, and restaurant.
Charitable These are costs relating to expenditure on preserving and maintaining Traquair House and activities: the associated trades of opening the house and gardens to the public and running of events at Traquair.
Governance These are costs associated with meeting the constitutional and statutory requirements of
and support the charity and include costs related to statutory audit and legal fees and costs linked to the
costs: strategic management of the charity. The allocation of these costs is detailed in note 10.
Overhead and other costs not directly attributable to particular functional activity categories are apportioned over the relevant categories on the basis of management estimates of the amount attributable to that activity in the year.
Irrecoverable VAT is charged against the category of resources expended for which it was incurred.
1.10 Intangible fixed assets other than goodwill
Intangible assets acquired separately from a business are recognised at cost and are subsequently measured at cost less accumulated amortisation and accumulated impairment losses.
Intangible assets acquired on business combinations are recognised separately from goodwill at the acquisition date where it is probable that the expected future economic benefits that are attributable to the asset will flow to the entity and the fair value of the asset can be measured reliably; the intangible asset arises from contractual or other legal rights; and the intangible asset is separable from the entity.
Amortisation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:
Website design
20% per annum straight line
1.11 Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.

Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:
Heritable property 5% per annum, straight line Other tangible assets 5 - 25% per annum, straight line Motor vehicles 25% per annum, straight line
The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset, and is recognised in the profit and loss account.
1.12 Biological assets
The trust has planted a commercial woodland which is included as a biological asset within fixed assets.
Biological assets are stated at cost less accumulated impairment losses. The assets are not depreciated. Biological assets are transferred to stock at cost when the timber is identified as ready to be felled.
1.13 Heritage assets
Heritage assets which are purchased are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost net of depreciation and any impairment losses. Heritage assets which are donated are initially recognised at valuation.
Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:
ttentage assets 5% per annum, straight iine
1.14 Investmentproperties
Investment property, which is property held to earn rentals and/or for capital appreciation, is initially recognised at cost, which includes the purchase cost and any directly attributable expenditure. Subsequently it is measured at fair value at the reporting end date. The surplus or deficit on revaluation is recognised in profit or loss.
1.15 Fixed asset investments
Equity investments are measured at fair value through profit or loss, except for those equity investments that are not publicly traded and whose fair value cannot otherwise be measured reliably, which are recognised at cost less impairment until a reliable measure of fair value becomes available.
In the parent charity financial statements, investments in subsidiaries are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost less any accumulated impairment losses.
A subsidiary is an entity controlled by the group. Control is the power to govern the financial and operating policies of the entity so as to obtain benefits from its activities.
The social investment is the trust's investment in Beyond Borders Productions Limited. This has been impaired as the company's balance sheet shows net liabilities.

1.16 Impairment of fixed assets
At each reporting period end date, the group reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible and intangible assets to determine whether there is any indication that those assets have suffered an impairment loss. If any such indication exists, the recoverable amount of the asset is estimated in order to determine the extent of the impairment loss (if any). Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an individual asset, the company estimates the recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the asset belongs.
The carrying amount of the investments accounted for using the equity method is tested for impairment as a single asset. Any goodwill included in the carrying amount of the investment is not tested separately for impairment.
Recoverable amount is the higher of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. In assessing value in use, the estimated future cash flows are discounted to their present value using a pre-tax discount rate that reflects current market assessments of the time value of money and the risks specific to the asset for which the estimates of future cash flows have not been adjusted.
If the recoverable amount of an asset is estimated to be less than its carrying amount, the carrying amount of the asset is reduced to its recoverable amount. An impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss, unless the relevant asset is carried at a revalued amount, in which case the impairment loss is treated as a revaluation decrease.
Recognised impairment losses are reversed if, and only if, the reasons for the impairment loss have ceased to apply. Where an impairment loss subsequently reverses, the carrying amount of the asset is increased to the revised estimate of its recoverable amount, but so that the increased carrying amount does not exceed the carrying amount that would have been determined had no impairment loss been recognised for the asset in prior years. A reversal of an impairment loss is recognised immediately in profit or loss, unless the relevant asset is carried at a revalued amount, in which case the reversal of the impairment loss is treated as a revaluation increase.
1.17 Stocks
Stocks are stated at the lower of cost and estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell. Cost comprises direct materials and, where applicable, direct labour costs and those overheads that have been incurred in bringing the stocks to their present location and condition.
At each reporting date, an assessment is made for impairment. Any excess of the carrying amount of stocks over its estimated selling price less costs to complete and sell is recognised as an impairment loss in profit or loss. Reversals of impairment losses are also recognised in profit or loss.
1.18 Cash at bank and in hand
Cash and cash equivalents are basic financial assets and include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other short-term liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.

1.19 Financial instruments
The group has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 'Basic Financial Instruments' and Section 12 'Other Financial Instruments Issues' of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.
Financial instruments are recognised in the group's balance sheet when the group becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.
Financial assets and liabilities are offset and the net amounts presented in the financial statements when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
Basic financial assets
Basic financial assets, which include debtors, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.
Other financial assets
Other financial assets, including investments in equity instruments which are not subsidiaries, associates or joint ventures, are initially measured at fair value, which is normally the transaction price. Such assets are subsequently carried at fair value and the changes in fair value are recognised in profit or loss, except that investments in equity instruments that are not publicly traded and whose fair values cannot be measured reliably are measured at cost less impairment.
Impairment of financial assets
Financial assets, other than those held at fair value through profit and loss, are assessed for indicators of impairment at each reporting end date.
Financial assets are impaired where there is objective evidence that, as a result of one or more events that occurred after the initial recognition of the financial asset, the estimated future cash flows have been affected. If an asset is impaired, the impairment loss is the difference between the carrying amount and the present value of the estimated cash flows discounted at the asset's original effective interest rate. The impairment loss is recognised in profit or loss.
If there is a decrease in the impairment loss arising from an event occurring after the impairment was recognised, the impairment is reversed. The reversal is such that the current carrying amount does not exceed what the carrying amount would have been, had the impairment not previously been recognised. The impairment reversal is recognised in profit or loss.
Derecognition of financial assets
Financial assets are derecognised only when the contractual rights to the cash flows from the asset expire or are settled, or when the group transfers the financial asset and substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to another entity, or if some significant risks and rewards of ownership are retained but control of the asset has transferred to another party that is able to sell the asset in its entirety to an unrelated third party.
Classification of financial liabilities
Financial liabilities and equity instruments are classified according to the substance of the contractual arrangements entered into. An equity instrument is any contract that evidences a residual interest in the assets of the group after deducting all of its liabilities.

Basic financial liabilities
Basic financial liabilities, including creditors, bank loans, loans from fellow group companies and preference shares that are classified as debt, are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.
Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.
Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of business from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
Other financial liabilities
Derivatives, including interest rate swaps and forward foreign exchange contracts, are not basic financial instruments. Derivatives are initially recognised at fair value on the date a derivative contract is entered into and are subsequently re-measured at their fair value. Changes in the fair value of derivatives are recognised in profit or loss in finance costs or finance income as appropriate, unless hedge accounting is applied and the hedge is a cash flow hedge.
Debt instruments may be designated as being measured at fair value through profit or loss to eliminate or reduce an accounting mismatch or if the instruments are measured and their performance evaluated on a fair value basis in accordance with a documented risk management or investment strategy.
Derecognition of financial liabilities
Financial liabilities are derecognised when the group's contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.
1.20 Equity instruments
Equity instruments issued by the group are recorded at the proceeds received, net of transaction costs. Dividends payable on equity instruments are recognised as liabilities once they are no longer at the discretion of the group.
1.21 Employee benefits
The costs of short-term employee benefits are recognised as a liability and an expense, unless those costs are required to be recognised as part of the cost of stock or fixed assets.
The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee's services are received.
Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the company is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.
1.22 Leases
Rentals payable under operating leases, including any lease incentives received, are charged to profit or loss on a straight line basis over the term of the relevant lease except where another more systematic basis is more representative of the time pattern in which economic benefits from the leased asset are consumed.

1 Accounting policies (continued)
1.23 Governmentgrants
Government grants are recognised at the fair value of the asset received or receivable when there is reasonable assurance that the grant conditions will be met and the grants will be received.
Government grants relating to turnover are recognised as income over the periods when the related costs are incurred. Grants relating to an asset are recognised in income systematically over the asset's expected useful life. If part of such a grant is deferred it is recognised as deferred income rather than being deducted from the asset's carrying amount.
2 Critical accounting judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty
In the application of the group's accounting policies, the Trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.
The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.
The items in the accounts where these judgements and estimates have been made include:
-
Estimating the useful economic life of tangible fixed assets; and
-
Estimating the market value of investment properties.

Traquair House and chattels
Traquair is the oldest continually lived in house in Scotland. Originally a hunting lodge for Scottish royalty it is said to date back to 1107 when a charter was issued from the castle by Alexander I. Traquair was owned by the Crown until it passed to the Earl of Buchan, who gifted the castle to his son James Stuart in 1491. The Stuarts have continued to live in the house ever since. The family remained loyal to the Stuart monarchy and were both Catholics and strong Jacobites. There is a strong connection with Mary Queen of Scots and the 4th Laird was the Captain of her bodyguard.
The majority of the rooms were re-decorated in the eighteenth century and a unique library was made at this time to house a collection of over 3,000 volumes and several incunables.
There is a fine and varied collection of Scottish furniture and paintings, an almost complete eighteenth century library with a collection of over 3,000 books, a rare Ruckers Harpsichord from 1651 and a number of eighteenth century Jacobite glasses.
The bed in the Kings room is reputed to have been the bed that Mary Queen of Scots slept in and the house also contains the cradle of her son James, her rosary and crucifix and an armorial commemorating her visit to the house.
The family returned to the Catholic faith in the mid 1560's and there exists a Priests Room with secret escape route as well as a chapel that was later created in 1829 when the Catholic Emancipation Act was passed. There is an important collection of early vestments, silver and woodcuts from the sixteenth century as well as a nineteenth century marble altar.
There are nineteen rooms that are open to the public.
A number of the chattels currently on display at Traquair remain in the ownership of . These are on loan to the Charitable Trust for no consideration on a permanent basis. The Trustees hope to purchase further items from in the future to ensure all items within the house are preserved.
Preservation costs
Expenditure which, in the Trustees' view, is required to preserve or prevent further deterioration of individual items, including preservation work to Traquair House, is recognised in the Income Account as incurred.
Records
A detailed photographic database is held as a record of the collection of heritage assets.
Access
Traquair House and grounds are open to the public between April and November each year. The House opening activity is run by one of the Charitable Trust's trading subsidiary companies: Traquair House Limited.
