The Management Committee present their report and financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2024. The accounts have been prepared on a Receipts and Payments basis in accordance with the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
Objectives and Activities
The object of the charity is to advance education and support personal development within communities experiencing multiple deprivation. Goodtrees Neighbourhood Centre provides safe, inclusive and supportive environments where children, young people and families can build confidence, develop skills and realise their potential.
The Centre delivers youth work, learning opportunities, community activities and intergenerational programmes designed to improve wellbeing, strengthen community connections and create positive pathways into education, employment and volunteering. Through these activities, the charity aims to reduce inequality, remove barriers to participation and create opportunities for people to thrive
Achievements and Performance
Review of Activities 2023/24: A Year of Growth, Impact and Youth Empowerment
The year 2023/24 demonstrated the impact that can be achieved when children and young people are trusted to lead, create and shape the world around them. At the heart of Goodtrees Neighbourhood Centre’s work is a commitment to youth voice, inclusion and opportunity, and throughout the year this approach translated into meaningful outcomes for individuals, families and the wider community.
On average, 315 children and young people engaged with Goodtrees programmes each week through a range of children’s and youth work activities. These sessions provided safe, welcoming and consistent spaces where young people could build relationships, develop confidence and feel a sense of belonging. Every child and young person attending sessions received a hot, nutritious meal, supporting families experiencing financial pressure and helping to address food insecurity.
Young people continued to demonstrate confidence and leadership through participation in external opportunities. Teams from Goodtrees took part in the Youth Work Games, competing against youth groups from across Scotland and achieving first place. A growing culture of youth leadership was evident, with increasing numbers of young people volunteering across services and supporting peers.
The Centre prioritised opportunities that broaden horizons and create positive memories. Young people attended London’s Wireless Festival, while younger children benefited from a respite break to Hopscotch, providing time away from everyday pressures and opportunities for play and exploration.
Operation Christmas remained a key community initiative. Supported by Cash for Kids Edinburgh and Social Bite, the project responded to a record number of referrals. In total, 516 children received gifts, pyjamas and food hampers. In addition, 65 older residents were supported through the intergenerational group, receiving gifts, sharing meals and participating in festive outings alongside youth volunteers.
School holiday programmes continued to tackle holiday hunger by providing free meals, activities and safe spaces. Partnership working with Edinburgh Festival Carnival enabled 90 children to participate in a community parade, attended by over 1,000 local residents.
Goodtrees supported positive transitions for young people, with 11 progressing into fulltime employment and a further 4 into further education or sessional roles within the Centre.
Looking ahead, the Centre will build on these strong foundations with continued support from The Robertson Trust and the National Lottery Community Fund, further developing youth provision and the Generations intergenerational project.
Public Benefit
In planning and delivering activities, the Management Committee have had regard to OSCR’s guidance on public benefit. The Centre’s activities are directed towards achieving its charitable purposes and providing benefit to the local community.
Structure, Governance and Management
Goodtrees Neighbourhood Centre is a charity registered in Scotland (SC026880) and operates under a constitution. The policy and general management of the organisation is
directed by a Management Committee elected at the Annual General Meeting. The Committee is responsible for governance and strategic oversight, with day-to-day management delegated to staff.
Financial Review
The charity recorded total income of £96,667 and expenditure of £93,015 during the year ended 31 March 2024, resulting in a surplus of £3,652. At the year end, unrestricted reserves stood at £6,532.18.
Reserves Policy
At 31 March 2024, the charity held free and unrestricted reserves of £6,532.18. The Management Committee aim to maintain reserves sufficient to meet short-term operational commitments and unexpected expenditure and will review this position annually.
Future Activities
The Centre will continue to develop creative and responsive youth work, strengthen partnerships, and mitigate the effects of poverty by providing food and access to positive experiences within sessions.

Basis of accounting
These accounts have been prepared on receipts and payments basis in accordance with the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
Premises and use of facilities
Goodtrees Neighbourhood Centre operates from premises provided by the City of Edinburgh Council. The building is made available without rental charge, and utilities, maintenance and janitorial services are provided by the Council. The Centre is permitted to generate income by leasing space within the building to local organisations and businesses where this supports the charitable purposes of the organisation.
Trustee remuneration
No remuneration or expenses were paid to members of the Management Committee during the year.
