## 3 Objectives and activities

Cadenza’s charitable purpose is to advance the educa=on of the public in the art of vocal and choral music by the presenta=on of public performances and other related ac=vi=es, which include giving concerts for other chari=es in response to their requests for support with fundraising.

Cadenza organises two main concerts of its own funds and par=cipates on average two or three charity concerts in aid of other chari=es. Cadenza also holds an annual free open rehearsal that welcomes non-members. Cadenza arranges social events, some for fundraising, throughout the year.

## 4 Structure, governance, and management

4.1 Type of governing document The management of Cadenza follows its Cons=tu=on and bye-laws.

## 4.2 Trustee recruitment and appointment

All the trustees are unpaid volunteers, who are appointed at the AGM, business mee=ng (or under special circumstances by the choir at a post-AGM special mee=ng). One of the guiding principles of appointments is that all sec=ons of Cadenza are represented.

## 5 Achievements and performance

The Christmas concert was mostly tradi=onal and well known music, and some innova=ons such as Tim Coleman’s own arrangement of “Quem Pastores”. We also had to overcome a last minute change of venue as our normal venue Polwarth Parish Church was suddenly unavailable for Health and Safety reasons. Luckily members of the choir found a last minute subs=tute in St. Peters, LuEon Place.

The theme for our charity concerts was “Rivers and Crossings”. We performed this programme Frst in North Berwick, on 29[th] March. This concert was organised by the Rotary, for East Lothian Young Carers. The music was varied, including Parry’s “Crossing the Bar”, and TippeE’s arrangement of “Deep River”. The new works included Tim Coleman’s own arrangement of the “Skye Boat Song”, sung by the sopranos and altos, and Tarney’s version of “O Waly Waly”, sung by the tenors and basses. There was a very enthusias=c audience and Rotary reported it had raised £1,600 pounds, topped up by the Rotary, to £2000.

We performed the programme for a second =me in Inverleith St. Serf’s on 26[th] April. This concert was to raise funds for ourselves. It was much enjoyed by the reasonably sized audience of 125. We raised £1,206 net of costs.

The Edinburgh Fes=val Fringe programme was also a departure from the normal, as it was Jazz based. Our last Jazz concert, with Will Todd, was one of our most successful ever, and this one was too. We also had a change of venue to St. Mary’s Cathedral, Palmerston Place. We had an audience of over 350, exceeded expecta=ons, and provided a wonderful atmosphere.

Our guest performers were Iain Farrington, who also wrote the Fnal item, playing the piano, accompanied by Tom Gordon on the drums and Ewan Has=e, Double Bass.

The Frst half consisted of two choral works: A LiEle Jazz Mass, by Bob ChilcoE and Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare, by George Shearing. In the second half the choir performed the incredible and monumental “Then Sing We All”, by Iain. The audience obviously enjoyed the performance very much as we received a standing ova=on at the end.

Financially, we report an overall surplus over the period of £5,411 (2024: deFcit of £1,562).

## 6 Financial review

This year marked an overall improvement in our Fnancial performance aLer two years of deFcits. We report an overall surplus of £5,411 (2024: deFcit of £1,562).

## 6.1 Summary of Income

Dona=ons – mainly from membership subscrip=ons – increased compared to the previous year. Two years’ of GiL Aid claims appear this period (from this and the previous Fnancial year).

We con=nue to leverage our extensive music library by making it available for hire to other choirs. This makes up the bulk of our Fundraising Receipts, alongside our Friends of Cadenza scheme and CD sales.

Income from concerts – by far the largest contribu=on to gross income from charitable ac=vi=es – increased as a result of high aEendances. Income from our Christmas concert was £4,197 (2024: £3,500), an income from our Fringe concert of £6,917 (2024: £5,617) and an income of £2,287 from a charity concert to raise funds for Cadenza (2024:£0 as all charity concerts were for other chari=es). A small contribu=on was also made from interest on cash savings.

## 6.3 Statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

It is the trustees’ policy to ensure suitable reserves to cover one terms’ worth of future expenses plus one concert, which we approximate to half of annual expenditure. These reserves should cater for eventuali=es (e.g. if unexpectedly a concert is cancelled at short no=ce) where the choir has already commiEed to organisa=onal and professional costs, but unable to raise funds from =cket sales. This currently equates to approximately £10,700.

Total unrestricted funds held at 30 September 2025 were £14,658 (2024: £9,247). This is a liEle higher than we budgeted for. This is the Frst surplus aLer several years of deFcit. The Trustees expect costs to rise in 2025-26 and will review the reserves policy in the coming year.

## 6.4 Details of any deficit

## 6.5 Donated facilities and services

The choir typically beneFts from free concert venues for some of its charity concerts. The trustees and concert organising members of the choir are all unpaid volunteers.

_Cadenza Trustees’ Annual Report 2024-25_

**8**

## 7 Future plans

At our AGM in October 2025, the choir agreed with the CommiEee to increase subscrip=ons in line with inNa=on, which should keep the choir on a break-even foo=ng for opera=onal expenses, however we need to be aware that our unrestricted funds should not be too much higher than the level of reserves that the Trustees have agreed.

Our two major concerts for our own beneFt remain the Christmas Concert in Polwarth and the Fringe Concert. We are also planning for two charity concerts, and will look to have another Open Rehearsal at the start of the next choir musical year (usually just before the end of the choir Fnancial year).

## 8 Additional information

## 8.1 How We Value our Music Library

This is our approach to reported value of our choral library:

1. As sheet music is purchased and entered into the library, we remove 35% of the price as immediate deprecia=on. Music is considered in ‘Good’ condi=on.

2. Music condi=on is assessed when sheet music is returned to the library (either from Cadenza use, or aLer external hire). An average condi=on for each set of music is applied:

|**Condi/on**|**Summary**|**Addi/onal**
**reduc/on in**
**value**|
|---|---|---|
|Good|No concerns on use.|0%|
|Fair|Some damage, repaired pages. S=ll useable.|40%|
|Poor|Not likely useful for external hire. Can be used internally,
but highly likely to deteriorate further and become
unusable.|80%|

As an example, a set of music purchased for £120 which is in ‘Fair’ condi=on would be valued at £120 * (1 – 0.35) * (1 – 0.4) = £120 * 0.65 * 0.60 = £46.80.

We spent £645.52 on new music during the year, which increases the cost of the library by the same amount and the value by 65% of that amount (to reNect the 35% immediate deprecia=on) compared to the previous period.

## 8.2 How We Value our Other Assets

We value our CDs based on the selling price of the total remaining stock we hold. We sold £102 in CDs, so the value decreases by that amount compared to last year.

We value our Concert Dress as the purchase price of the remaining concert folders we hold in stock (i.e. those which have not been distributed to the choir). We had previously fully-depreciated our concert dress =es and scarves, so they play no part in the calcula=on.

||The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance
with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the
Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees
consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations
does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section
44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.|||||||||
||My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts
Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the
charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes
consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks
explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken
do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do
not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.|||||||||
||In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
1.
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the
requirements:
•
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and
Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
•
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with
Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations
have not been met, or
2.
to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper
understanding of the accounts to be reached.|||||||||
