Kilrenny and Anstruther Burgh Collection
Trustees Report 2024-25:
Current Trustees:
Kevin Dunion, Chair, Glenn Jones, Vice chair and acting secretary, Lorna Jones, treasurer, Margaret MacArthur, Elizabeth Riches.
2024/2025 has been a challenging year for our trustees. Very sadly our perennially cheerful secretary Jane Partington passed away in January 2025, cruelly afflicted by cancer. Liz Ross, our social media key person stepped down from the committee. She was thanked for her contributions, first as researcher and author of one of our best-selling publications Happy Days; then as our social media key person overseeing activity on Facebook and X and also liaising with our webhost. Ken Mackinnon is also stepping down. Ken has worked on the better presentation and outreach of our material.
Chairman Kevin had had to step back as Chair for several months due to personal and work commitments. Vice chair Glenn was thanked for shouldering the burden of being interim chair and acting secretary in that time. Lorna has continued to act as treasurer and book sales co-ordinator through the year, for which she is to be thanked.
The Burgh Collection now occupies 3 rooms in the East Neuk Centre— Darwood, Stevenson and Barker. Work is underway to display more of our material on in the Darwood Room. Exhibition panels have been produced from material relating to the local schools. Work on these was initiated by a working group which included Elizabeth and Margaret, then later the compilation work begun by Liz was completed by Glenn. The new panels thus created are ready for display in the Darwood room
There was good progress in our engagement with local businesses and clubs who were able to draw upon upon relevant material in our collection. Kevin’s recent presentation of a framed and captioned photo of Elizabeth Johnston QMAAC in golfing attire to Anstruther Golf Club was given prominent coverage in social media pages of the local press. Elizabeth, who died in France on Christmas Day 1918 is the only woman on the Anstruther war memorial at Billowness. She is also the only woman on the Roll of Honour of the Golf Club of which she was a keen Lady Member
Assistance continues to be given with family research. Fife Family History Society appear to be directing enquiries to us and Chat GPT now appears to direct queries about Anstruther family history towards the Burgh Collection. One recent request saw Kevin research a Mary Ann Goudie and we found that she had died of extensive burns in a fire in Buckie House in 1953. Another request found a male relative from Kilrenny whose daughter was transported to Australia, sentenced to 7 years for passing off forged coinage.
On a much more pleasant note we received golf clubs, bag and balls from the daughter of Robert Rankine Scotland Young. The clubs were made by Brodies — a well-known cleek maker in West Anstruther. Robert went to Waid Academy where he wasa rover scout. He studied chemistry at university and was apprenticed to Doig’s the Chemist, before moving to London to carry out research.
‘
These are the kind of stories which we wish to encourage people to provide us as part of[our] Sharing Our Stories initiative which Glenn has developed. Donations of photographs or any other memorabilia are also invited.
The Burgh Collection is in a fortunate position to have good premises, good local social media attention; sound financial base; and publications which sell well in SFM and online. What we lack are people to maintain this, to take forward current plans and come up with new initiatives. New trustees, in other words. Our active number has dwindled to the point it is fair to say it is precarious. We must this year have new volunteers and trustees/committee members sharing responsibility. Roles include accessioning new items and becoming familiar with the collection; social media posts and word press proficiency; researching a particular topic of interest and/ or working as part of a project team; giving talks. Anyone who might be interested is invited to speak with the Chairman, or any other trustee/committee member.
Kevin Dunion, Chairman Glenn Jones, acting secretary October 2025
