Ùrachadh Uibhist was started by five local women with the aim of creating local employment and encouraging sustainable development in the community. Its development followed that of Còthrom in South Uist, which had been formed not long before and which was developing its own community project. Developing the Claddach Kirkibost school house into a project within which the UU development aims could be met was a key priority of the Trust.
Objectives: To relieve the poverty of and advance the education of, the residents of Uist , by the following means:- (1) the provision of education and training in skills of all kinds, particularly such as will assist the residents of Uist in obtaining paid employment. (2) the promotion of the implementation of schemes of industry and commerce for the benefit of the public in Uist .
