## **Structure, Governance & Management**
The New Edinburgh Orchestra is an unincorporated association. Membership of the charity is open to all and comprises two main types: a) player, and b) orchestral management structure. The two types are not mutually exclusive. The charity is managed by a management committee who are elected or re-elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. The Management Committee consists of six principal offices plus others as may be considered necessary by the Committee. In addition the Leader of the Orchestra and the Musical Director are part of the Management Committee.

## **Objectives and Activities**
The purpose of the charity is the provision of musical performance in orchestral music. To this end the charity provides members with the opportunity to study, rehearse and perform orchestral music. Three performances are normally given each year.
## **Achievements and Performance**
The orchestra gave 3 successful concerts in the 2024-25 season: 14th December, 22nd March and 21st June with audience attendance figures of 228, 166 and 177 respectively.
At the beginning of the season we welcomed a good number of new members especially across the string sections. We still continue to use Inverleith St Serf’s Church as our venue for rehearsals and concerts and thanks go to the church for providing excellent facilities and assistance for our concerts. This last season we played a very varied and ambitious programme attracting good audience numbers. The members are grateful to the support given by these audiences and to the Friends of the Orchestra. Thanks also must go to the committee members who give up their time to ensure the smooth running of the orchestra.
In December we played Mendelssohn Ruy Blas op. 95, J Strauss Emperor Waltz op. 437, Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini op. 43 with soloist Juliette Philogène and then Nielsen Symphony no.1 in G minor op. 7. In March we played David Wilson Skyline (2024), a first performance written for the New Edinburgh Orchestra. The next piece was Dvorak: The Golden Spinning Wheel op. 109. In the second half we played Vaughan Williams: A London Symphony. For the final concert of the season we played Sibelius Karelia Suite op. 11, then Beethoven Romance in F major op.50 with soloist Joanna Duncan. Next we played Elgar Falstaff – Symphonic Study in C minor op. 68 and finally Shostakovich Symphony no. 1 in F minor op. 10.

## **Financial Review**
This was another good year for the orchestra, which culminated with a surplus of £2,565. Income was up 20%, predominantly from improved ticket sales and donations. Expenses were up by 22%, mainly due to more expensive music and instrument hire. However, it should be noted that £826 of these expenses related to a prepayment for Michael Tippett’s Ritual Dances to be played in the 2025-26 financial year.
At the year end there was a total cash balance of £13,953, which the Trustees consider to be appropriate to allow the charity to continue its activities for future years.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees on the Accounts of New Edinburgh Orchestra, SC023729**
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30th June 2025 which are set out on pages 5 to 6 .
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement**
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

The orchestra was formed in 1994 by Alexander Acland, and became a
registered charity in 1995. The organisation is administered in accordance
with the Constitution of the New Edinburgh Orchestra, which was drawn
up in 2000 and revised in 2013.
**Trustee recruitment and appointment**
Trustees are elected or re-elected by the society at the Annual General
Meeting, and all sit on the management committee. Appointment and
removal are in accordance with the Constitution, which requires that if a
post becomes vacant before an AGM it shall be advertised to society
members and the appointment made by a vote amongst members if more
than one candidate seeks to take up the role.
