Structure, Governance & Management
Governing Document:
Cursillo In Scotland is registered with OSCR as a unincorporated association and was first registered as a Charity on 20[th] March 1995.
Trustee Recruitment & Appointment:
The Trustees are part of a Secretariat, which is made up of leaders from within the Cursillo Community who are responsible for the promotion; development and proper direction of the Cursillo Movement in the province. The Secretariat will appoint various committees, as a minimum, those necessary to operate the essential activities of the movement.
Objectives & Activities
The Charities Charitable Purpose:
As set out in the ‘Constitution’ and ‘The Charities and Trustee Investments(Scotland) Act 2005’ the purpose(s) of Cursillo in Scotland are the following:-
- The advancement of religion.
And any other purpose that may reasonably be regarded as analogous to any of the preceding purposes.
Summary of the main activities in relation to these objectives:
The charity's objectives in relation to the above is to make Christian community possible in neighbourhoods, parishes, work situations and other places where people live the greater part of their lives. It attempts to make it possible for anyone in the world to live a Christian life in a natural way.

Achievement & Performance for 2025-26
Scottish Episcopal Cursillo is a joint clergy and lay movement of the church whose purpose is to equip its members with the skills and confidence required to be active Christians in their everyday lives. Cursillo Weekends introduce this method and follow-on meetings (Reunion Groups and Ultreyas) continue to provide ongoing fellowship, support, teaching and encouragement. Together with feedback and input to the British Anglican Cursillo Council, Ultreya Groups continue to meet in four out of the seven dioceses of the Scottish Episcopal Church (plus an additional group in the Scottish Borders) on a regular basis throughout the year. Representatives of each group come together as the Servant Community in order to support the Secretariat in their work to plan and discuss their requirements and their continuing efforts to support their membership and to recruit new members.
We are also working towards increasing knowledge about Cursillo and have a programme in place which will be delivered during 2026. This will enable current members to engage with their congregations to promote the Cursillo method. We have called this 'Fourth Day First'. The Secretariat met nine times in the Financial Year, these were all carried out by Zoom except one. At these meetings we conduct the business of the organisation, planning the next Cursillo weekend, our programme for Fourth Day First as well as any other competent business. Cursillo Weekend 72 was held at Carronvale in Larbert in October 2025 and proved to be a highly successful weekend for all involved. However, due to some challenges with participant numbers, Secretariat has decided to delay the next weekend until 2027. This will allow us to concentrate on the Fourth Day First programme to enable us to build up the knowledge base of current members. We held one Servant Community meeting in Haddington in October, which was followed by a Secretariat meeting in person. Servant Community meetings are open to all Cursillistas and we have floating reunion groups, an action talk and biblical response, followed by discussions on the Cursillo method with input from the Cursillo community. Points raised are then discussed at the Secretariat meeting.
Our AGM date was brought forward to June, following previous issue with bad weather in October and November. This was an in-person meeting held in Perth.

The Secretariat was actively involved in the planning of Cursillo 72 and continues to ensure that the recently vacated positions in its membership are filled. These include a treasurer and a communication convenor. Our intention is to provide training for new trustees using an online course from the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations.
Our current Pastoral Plan requires to be updated and this will be achieved through a small working party consisting of one member secretariat and two or three Cursillistas. There has been some delay with this, however it is our intention to address this over the next few months.
The Fourth Bridge publication continues to be circulated to members and the Secretariat is grateful to Margaret McMeekin who is our Communications Convenor, for arranging publication.
Communication is further enhanced via a members’ Facebook group and the organisation’s website. Cursillo continues to be supported financially through continuing support from generous members, enabling our work to progress. However, we are pushing for more regular donors. Gift Aid was claimed for previous years and again this year which has helped our finances. Cursillo ensures that those who attend a weekend are not penalised financially and that, as a result, Cursillo is open to all whatever their financial circumstances. Our current financial position needs to be improved, and the Secretariat is conscious of the fact that if we were fortunate enough to require a second annual weekend our funds would quickly deplete.

Financial Review
Statement of Reserves Policy:
The trustees consider it desirable that annual expenditure is met out of annual income. It is the objective of the trustees to achieve where possible a small surplus each year but not to build up reserves unless there is a specific known need in the future.
Details of any deficit:
There was a financial deficit this year. Weekend 72 was run as a four day weekend instead of three and the venue costs had risen. The website fees were due for renewal and a special offer meant we purchased 5 years. The BACC fees were paid late over the last two years due to the invoice going to the wrong address and so two sets were paid this year. Due to the deficit and poor and late numbers of applications for the last weekend it was decided to delay the next one until 2027. In the meantime it is planned to have some training covering running of a weekend, sponsorship and trustee training. The Trustees will continue to monitor the balances in the new financial year.
Details of Donated Facilities & Services:
The Charity benefits from the time given by all the Trustees to the running of the Charity, including monitoring, supervision and meeting times.
Statement of Trustees Responsibilities
The members of the Charity must prepare financial statements which give sufficient detail to enable an appreciation of the transactions of the Charity during the financial year. The members of the Charity are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which, on request, must reflect the financial position of the Charity at that time. This must be done to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and must take reasonable steps for the prevention and/or detection of fraud and other irregularities.

3. Trustee Remuneration and Related Party Transactions
The Trustees did not receive any remuneration during the year. Some expenses were claimed.
4. Nature & Purpose of Funds
The statements of account for the year show the financial figures for the Charity. If any Grants were to be received they will be treated as restricted for the sole use of the Charity and its running costs.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s statement
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
