The charity was set up to preserve the historic Dalgarven Mill complex which has been located on the site since the 14th century. The current main building a former grain mill dates back to 1880.The Trust was set up in 1987 following an extensive period of refurbishment. As part of the refurbishment plan it was decided that the Museum would be used to display and preserve the legacy of Ayrshire Country Life and to achieve this an extensive collection of Ayrshire farming and domestic memorabilia and artefacts has been accumulated and housed in the buildings. The working machinery of the Mill including the large external water wheel has also been fully preserved. A feature of the collection which has grown in quantity and stature over the years is the extensive costume collection with items featured from the 1700s through to the present day.
