For the year ended 31 August 2024
1. The 29th Glasgow (1st Newlands) Scout Group submit their report together with the financial statements and independent examiner’s report for the year ended 31st August 2024.

## 3. **Constitution & Purpose**
The Scout Group is constituted in terms of the Rules of The Scout Association, which is a charitable body incorporated by Royal Charter. The Group is a “Scottish Charity” the number SC022392.
The purpose of the Scout Association is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. The method of achieving the aim of the Association is by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training, based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by adult leadership.
4. The affairs of the Scout Group are managed by the Trustees who form the Group Executive Committee, whose members are recruited and appointed in accordance with the Policy, Organisation & Rules (“POR”) of the Scout Association.
5. The members of the Group Executive Committee as listed hereafter served throughout the year unless otherwise noted.

## 6. **Group Scout Leader’s Report**
This review covers the scouting year 2023-24. At the time of our annual census in January 2024 the Group had a total of 169 youth members – 39 Beavers, 62 Cubs, 49 Scouts and 19 Explorer Sea Scouts, this was a drop of 13 from the previous year.
As always, the Groups’ leadership teams continue put in considerable effort to provide a quality safe programme to all the sections, here is a very brief overview of some of those activities.
The two Beaver sections had a good year, running a varied programme both in the halls and away from the halls. In their weekly meetings they had lots of fun and earned lots of badges. Activities ranged from learning about the solar system and using an app to look at the stars for the space badge, to designing their own money for the money skills badge and of course the regular evening of making smores. They used our local parks, with a torchlight walk in Pollok Park, cycling in Auldhouse Park and following a map round Newlands Park for the Navigator Badge.
The Beavers had a great day at Auchengillan in November doing a range of adventurous activities and two sleepovers were held in the Scout Halls in November and April with visits to the Science centre and Calder Glen Park and Zoo respectively.
A number of the Beavers from both sections achieved their Chief Scout Bronze award.
We had 3 active Cub packs during the year. led both Monday and Tuesday packs after Lesley Gillespie stepped down in June 2023, but this was a temporary arrangement in the hope that a new leader could be found for the Tuesday pack – sadly, despite all our efforts, this did not happen. Ben Hume continued to lead the Wednesday Cub pack.
On regular meeting nights, the Cubs took part in a wide range of activities which contributed to badges and challenges. These activities included indoor and outdoor games and challenges, fire building and pioneering, mapwork, problem solving, crafts at Christmas and Easter. Several Cubs are members of the South Western District Gang Show and Cubs enjoyed another night with the Creative Arts team. Cubs had an evening of athletics run by two Cub parents and, together with Beavers enjoyed a Friday night Pizza and Movie Night just before Christmas.
Getting outdoors and away from the halls the Monday Cubs had nights in Linn park, exploring bio-fluorescence and bio-luminescence of fungi and creepy crawlies and also followed the new tree trail in Pollok park. Cubs from all three packs enjoyed getting on the water at Pinkston for a summer evening canoeing with volunteers of Scout Active Support group at Pinkston Watersports and days at Largs, out in powerboats with John and Sandy.
Sixteen Cubs from Monday and Wednesday packs enjoyed a weekend at Lochgoilhead in September, taking part in 5 activity sessions on the land and on the water, and coming home having achieved their Adventure Challenge award as well as Nights Away.
During the year the Wednesday Scout section, led by , continued to go from strength to strength, with a number of new youth and adult members joining. A varied programme both in and away from the halls was on offer. The section once again teamed up with the Explorer Sea Scouts in the summer to head off to Lochgoilhead Scout Centre for their summer camp, taking part in a variety of adventurous outdoor activities.

The Thursday Scouts, led by , have been as busy as always, running a varied programme which included projects with the rangers in Pollok Country Park. Like the other sections some of the Thursday Scouts headed to Lochgoilhead Scout Centre during the summer months for their summer camp taking part in ScotJam. Before Christmas the Thursday section invited the Wednesday Scouts to join them for a Christmas overnighter with dinner in the halls.
The Explorer Sea Scouts continue to offer a varied programme throughout the year, both in and out of the halls and both on land and sea. A number of the Explorer Sea Scouts took part in SubZero at Auchengillan during the February half-term holiday, and thankfully did not get blown away by the high winds. The Duke of Edinburgh award continues to be offered, with a number of the Explorer Sea Scouts completing their volunteering by helping as Young Leaders with the Beaver and Cubs sections.
The Group continues to offer a variety of water activities to our older sections, with plenty of opportunity throughout the year to sail, powerboat and kayak.
This is just a very brief overview of some of the activities the sections have been doing and I know there are many other activities and camps that have taken place, and badges and awards gains which I haven’t mentioned.
The Group continues to be very active which is down to all the volunteers who give up their time, especially those who are leading up the sections. We have been fortunate to have a number of new leaders join, which has eased some of the pressure on the existing teams. I would just like to say a big thank you to all of them, none of this would be possible without their dedication.
An equally big thank-you to all the helpers who help organise and run the Group’s various fundraising activities, during the year we took part in the Newlands Fete, had our own Christmas Fair and our Annual Jumble Sale which all remain important sources of income to the Scout Group.
Thank-you to all the Trustees who continue to run the Group in the background. During the year we were pleased to be able to fill the vacancy of Treasurer, with taking on this important role.
A special mention to who continues to be very active with the Group’s RYA Training Centre, running a number of theory and practical courses, and to Pamela Walls who runs the RYA First Aid courses. The courses continue to bring regular income into the group.

As ever the Group faces a few challenges… Our leadership teams do a brilliant job, but we desperately need to find new adult volunteers to help restart our Tuesday Cub section. We have Cubs on the waiting list who could immediately join the section, so we need to do our best to find a new team of leaders to allow them to join.
Our halls continue to show their age, with lots of things needing repaired or renewed – none of which is cheap. The replacement of all the windows has become a greater priority, and will require considerable financial input from the Group hopefully in addition to outside funding..

Looking ahead, the Group will be just as busy as it always has been, with forty scouts and leaders heading to Austria during summer 2025. We need to start planning for the future and start searching for volunteers to be the new section leaders, trustees and eventually Group Scout Leader.
Thanks as always to Morag MacDermid and Douglas Jarvis and everyone else who support me in my role as Group Scout Leader.
7. The Group remains financially self-supporting and, for its income, relies entirely on fundraising events, subscriptions, donations, grants and gift aid.
8. We record our sincerest thanks to our Leaders, Trustees, non-uniformed helpers, parents and supporters all of whom are volunteers and receive no payment for their efforts.
9. The Group continues to be Royal Navy recognised (Unit 90) and is a Royal Yachting Association training centre delivering practical courses in dinghy sailing and power boating as well as theory courses in navigation, first aid and VHF radio.
10. The Group is proud to be affiliated with HMS Defender.

The Trustees of the Society present their Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31 August 2024.
## **Governing Document**
The 29th Glasgow (1st Newlands) Scout Group is a charity registered in Scotland, number SC022392 and the purposes and administration arrangements are set out in our constitution.
## **Charitable Purposes**
The objectives of the Scout Group are to provide facilities for such forms of recreation and other leisure-time occupation. The Charity’s income is derived from the profits.
## **Trustees**
The Trustees during the year were as detailed on the annexed Report prepared by the Group Scout Leader.
- The Trustees are appointed by the Members at the Annual General Meeting.
- The Trustees receive no remuneration or expenses during the year from the Scout Group.
## **Activities and Achievements**
During the year the Scout Group organised various functions and events for the benefit of local children. The Trustees are satisfied with the results for the year and are of the opinion that the Scout Group is well placed to carry out its objectives in the coming year.
## **Statement of Trustees Responsibilities**
The Regulation of Charities requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus or deficit of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to:
- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in business.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with The Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Accounting convention**
The accounts are prepared under the historical cost convention and in compliance with the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 and applicable accounting standards.
## **Income**
Income is received from subscriptions, fundraising and charges for activities engaged in by the group to its members.
## **Depreciation**
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:
- Buildings and Alterations – at 10% per annum straight line
- Boating equipment and trailers – at 10% per annum straight line
- Minibus – at 25% per annum reducing balance.
## **Government grants**
Government grants in respect of capital expenditure are credited to a deferred income account and are released to profit over the expected lives of the relevant assets by equal annual instalments.
