Trustees' Annual Report
The trustees have pleasure in presenting their report together with the financial statements and the Independent Examiner’s Report for the year ended 30 April 2026.
Structure, Governance and Management
Constitution
The charity is an unincorporated association. It is governed by its constitution, which was adopted in September 1991 and is reviewed at the Annual General Meeting at which it was last amended on 24th October 2023. The Symphony Orchestra was granted charitable status by OSCR on 30th January 1994.
Appointment of Trustees
The charity’s two Trustees are the Ensemble’s Treasurer and either the Chairperson or Secretary, who are Office Bearers of the Ensemble’s committee that meets on a weekly basis. Membership of the committee is open to members of the Ensemble, though Office Bearer positions are open to matriculated students of the University of Glasgow only, as specified by the constitution.
The Trustees (the Treasurer and Chairperson) and all other committee positions and ordinary members are elected at the Annual General Meeting that is normally held in the middle of March. If a committee position is vacant then a member of the Ensemble may be elected to fill said position at a special general meeting held at the start of January, as per our constitution.
Management
The Trustees are responsible for the strategic direction and governance of the Ensemble, as well as the financial position and accounting records of the Ensemble in the role of Treasurer. Issues are discussed and delegated at weekly committee meetings.
Both the trustees and the committee are particularly aware of compliance with the Performing Rights Society, specifically the need for a Performing Rights License to be able to charge tickets for entry into the Ensemble’s concerts as well as complying with the legal copyright of the classical music performed.
Key management remuneration
The charity is managed on a day-to day basis by the trustees (the Treasurer and Chairperson) who are volunteers, no salary or remuneration was paid to the trustees for the management of the charity.
Objectives and Activities
Charitable Purpose
The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science specifically for children and young people within a specific locality in Glasgow City.
Objective
The objective of the Ensemble shall be to advance public education in the appreciation of the art and science of orchestral music in all its aspects by; maintenance, support, development of orchestral performance at the highest level under professional guidance and by such format as the ensemble shall determine.

Activities
The Kelvin Ensemble is Glasgow University’s student run symphony orchestra and is the only full size orchestra at the university, providing its members a unique opportunity in classical music. The Ensemble’s main activity is to provide its members the chance to perform together in concerts under the direction and tutelage of professional musicians to enhance the members’ musical ability. Activities include auditions, rehearsals, publicity, after rehearsal socials and concert organisation and management.

Financial Review
Kelvin Symphony Orchestra's largest source of funding is from concert income and membership subscriptions.
Income for the year 2025-26 was £17,673 (2025: £14,089). This increase is due to the decision to increase the price of concert tickets for concession audience members from £6 to £7 per ticket.
Membership subscriptions income amounted to £2,640 (2025: £2,439) as a result of increased subscription fees from the previous year, and an increase in members towards 90 throughout the whole year. The Symphony Orchestra generated £7,787 in concert ticket income (2025: £6,314) as a result of increased ticket prices. Fundraising was another significant source of income, raising £2,722 this year (2025: £2,073).
The Orchestra's biggest expense is conducting fees and player hire. The total payments for the year were £12,133 (2025: £12,392). Additionally, spending was reduced this year because money was saved on printing and music hire. Printing costs amounted to £216 (2025: £404) and music hire was nil (2025: £157). Conducting fees totalled £4,764 (2025: £4,858). Player hire was approximately the same as lat year, totalling £1,180 (2025: £1,185),however there was a reduction in rates from £55 per concert in Semester 1 to £40 per concert in Semester 2.
Overall, the Symphony Orchestra incurred a net surplus of £5,540 (2025: £1,697). This increase in surplus from last year is due to the uncertainty of the cost of facility and janitorial charges to use the university’s space for concerts throughout the year. The total liability remains unquantified past 30 April 2026, but based on various quotes given, it is considered disproportionately high relative to the Society’s normal income. On this basis, the Society is likely able to meet the facilities charges for the current year.
Reserves Policy
It is the policy of the Trustees to hold reserves equivalent to three months running costs based on the year end 30 April 2026, this equates to £3,033 (2025: £3,098). The balance of unrestricted reserves on 30 April 2026 stood at £15,196 (2025: £9,656), therefore the Trustees are satisfied that this policy is being met. Funds held in excess of this amount will be reinvested in the development of the Symphony Orchestra.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner:
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examiner's statement:
My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

1. General Information
The Kelvin Symphony Orchestra ("the charity") is an unincorporated association governed by its constitution as amended October 2023. It was registered as a charity in Scotland (registered number SC022303) on 30 January 1994. Its registered address is The Department of Music, University of Glasgow, 14 University Gardens, Glasgow, G12 8QH.
2. Basis of Preparation
These accounts have been prepared on the Receipts and Payments basis in accordance with the Charities and Trustee. Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).
