REPORT OF THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

YEAR ENDED 31[st] January 2025

Governing Document

The Stewartry Young Farmers Club is an unincorporated charity. As governed by our constitution, the club provides activities, which further personal development, cultural education and training of young people to make rural life more attractive to the young members of the community.

Charitable Purposes

To advance the education and training of young people at large in rural issues, agriculture, homecrafts and related subject. To advance the development of active citizens through development off individuals’ involvement within their local community and leadership of their Young Farmer Group. In the interests of social welfare of young people in rural Scotland provide and promote the provision of activities for recreation and other leisure time occupations which will improve their conditions of life and will assist in the development of their spiritual and mental capacities and self reliance and individual responsibility.

Achievements and performance

March

• On Monday 11[th ] March, we kicked off the new Young Farmer year and held our AGM at Castle Douglas Committee Centre where our committee for the year ahead was elected.

• On Saturday 16[th ] March, a cast of 23 members took part in D&G Talent Spot at the Theatre Royal in Dumfries, performing our production ‘The Moo for me’ which placed first place, a massive achievement for the club. With this result, the club took to the stage again on Saturday 6[th ] April for West Talent Spot. Unfortunately, there were no awards this time around, but all enjoyed the weekend. A massive thank you once again goes to for writing and producing our Talent Spot,

• for Chorography and for scenery and behind the stage help.

• their snare drum and bagpipe performance. The audience loved them but unfortunately, they missed out for qualifying for west.

April

• On Tuesday 9[th ] April we held our New Members Night at The Haugh of Urr Village Hall. We had 36 people in attendance, with 8 new members paying membership after the evening! It was a very successful evening with games which allowed people to get to know each other and have fun. Thank you to everyone who baked and helped with the organisation of the evening.

• On Wednesday 10[th ] April, the Tug of War season commenced with the first practice of the year being held at Halmyre Farm. Practices were ongoing twice weekly throughout the early summer months.

• On Wednesday 17[th ] April we hosted a handicrafts meeting at the Laurie Arms to form handicraft teams and begin thinking of ideas for the upcoming handicraft events. It was great to see both female and male members keen to take part this year.

• On Sunday 21[st ] April, we had our first club outing of the year to LA Bowls in Ayr followed by a meal at Mr Basrais World Cuisine. There was 26 members in attendance, with it being the first club outing for 5 of them. Everyone had a great time, and many competitive sides were shown.

• On Thursday 25th April we kicked off Rally practices. These were held weekly between the Haugh Park and a field across from Village Hall, with kind permission of Davidson Family. These practices had good attendance allowed for members to practice the different events for rally and socialise.

• On Sunday 28th April we had members compete at D&G Tug of War. The boys team fought some tough competition and came out second. Unfortunately, we did not have enough girls to form a girls’ team, but 2 girls joined with Lower Nith to form a team which came out victorious! This means both teams have qualified for West Tug of War.

May

• Saturday 11th May seen the return of Ayr Show and the start of Handicrafts season. This year we had a lot of keen members participating, with two senior teams and one junior team entered to the show. Unfortunately, there was no certificates this year, but all teams produced some amazing articles. Thank you to for her help and advice with all handicrafts this year.

• Rally Day finally arrived on Saturday 18th May with 23 members travelling to Mains of Balgreggan Farm at Sandhead, Stranraer. All members had a great day in the sunshine competing in all the competitions, followed with a meal at Papa Rabs to end the day, with some members attending the dance held in Stranraer afterwards.

• Finally on Wednesday 22nd May, we started weekly sports practices after having focussed on primarily Rally events in previous weeks. This included a Field Sports Day practice held in Dalbeattie High School on Monday 27th May. Practices were well attended and enjoyed by members and we continued these weekly sports evenings throughout the summer months trying out a range of different sports including rounders, badminton, tennis and football.

June

• On Saturday 1st June, the club had a busy day with members competing at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation ‘It’s a Knockout Challenge’ at Stewartry Rugby Club. 22 teams competed in different inflatable and water activities throughout the afternoon. The team unfortunately didn’t place in the final, but all enjoyed their day, and it was good to support this chairty event in our local area.

• On the same day the club had a male TOW team compete at West TOW at Gargunnock Show. Although the team never placed, they all gained good experience which will help with training and any future competitions.

• On Sunday 2nd June, we had 3 teams entered into D&G Field Sports competition at Dalbeattie High School. It was great to see lots of club members there to represent the club and compete in Netball, Football and Volleyball competitions against clubs from across the district.

• On Tuesday 6th June, we held our first stockjudging of the year. A dairy stockjudging at Rattra Farm, Borgue by kind permission of the Cruickshanks family. We had around 50 people in attendance, who all enjoyed a night of great stock and socialising.

• On Friday 7th June, we had a girls hockey and boys football team go along to support Annandale’s Sports Night and dance in Lockerbie. Although no certificates came home, at least no one ended up on crutches this time around!

• Finally, from the 20-23rd of June, it was time for the Royal Highland Show. This year it was amazing to have both a junior and senior handicraft team compete in the handicraft section, well done to the teams for all their hard work and receiving some great scores.

• Across the show members were also busy in other events with Abby Forsyth presenting prizes at the Young Farmers Awards Ceremony and many members doing well in the show rings. Taking home champion ribbons were in the Belted Galloway Section. And across in the sheep the , took both

champion and reserve champion titles and went on to win the pairs sheep interbreed in the Blackface Section. A very successful show for all these members!

July

• On Wednesday 10th July we had our annual car treasure hunt running from Castle Douglas High School to the Laurie Arms in the Haugh of Urr. We had a great turnout of 19 cars taking part and thankfully no one got lost this year. Thank you again to for making the route this year.

• On Saturday 20th July we supported the Castle Douglas Civic Day parade with the entry of a decorated tractor and trailer. We had 11 members on the trailer dressed as farm animals with Farmer Craig in the tractor driving seat. It was great to see the return of the parade and the success it brought to Castle Douglas.

• Saturday 27th July saw the return of the arguably greatest day in the calendar, Stewartry Show! We had a very successful day with games in the tent drawing people in to compete

in games, as well as the new club clothing orders coming in. Then we moved to the town hall for the dance which saw the hall bouncing once again thanks to the DJ and the doors closed early due to getting to the hall capacity. A huge thank you to the committee and all other members who helped on the tent, dance door, bar and helped the day and night run so smoothly.

• On Sunday 28th July, 12 members headed to the bottom park in Castle Douglas with the Tug of War rope. We ran a small competition with 7 teams entered, in support of s ‘one big thank you’ raising money for the NHS. There was plenty of competitive

• spirits and some egos bruised as our YF team was pulled to the ground by every child in the park!

• On Wednesday 31[st] July and Saturday 3[rd] August, we had handicraft teams entered at both Stranraer and Dumfries Shows. The team placed 3rd at Stranraer against some tough competition. At Dumfries show there was entries from across the region with us scoring 7th out of 11 teams. Also, at Dumfries show we had great success with scoring first place with her informative and very colourful secretary noticeboard. Massive congratulations to her - very well deserved.

August

• On Tuesday 20th August, we hosted a friendly hockey game with Lower Nithsdale at Dalbeattie Learning Campus. It was great to see members come along to try the sport and have some fun competition with another club before the West competition at the weekend.

• On Friday 23rd August, it was time for our Annual Beef and Sheep Stock judging, which was held at Corse Farm, Balmaclellan by kind permission of the Finlay family. We had a fantastic turnout of over 120 people. Thank you again to the Finlay family for hosting, both judges and everyone who helped scoring, running cards, working the bar and cooking burgers at the event.

• On Sunday 25th August, 10 members travelled to Marr Playing Fields in Troon, to compete in West Hockey. The rain was coming down all morning however the team remained in high spirits and played their best for all their games. It was great to see the club getting a hockey team and hopefully interest in the sport within the club can continue into future years.

September

• Sunday 1st September, saw our second club day out of the year. 16 members travelled to Carlisle for trampolining at Fusion Park followed by lunch at Pizza Hut. All enjoyed a day out and socialising together.

• This year’s Farm Walk was held on Tuesday 3rd September at Ernespie Farm and Farm Centre, by kind permission of . It was a very informative evening with David showing us round the farm, farm centre and outdoor play area before heading back to the centre for refreshments.

• We ended the evening with Charity waxing where their legs were waxed in preparation for their big cycle. They raised over £200 for their charity from the waxing.

• Sunday 8th September saw the return of D&G Dairy and Beef Cattle Dressing. We had one team competing in each competition. competed in junior

• Also, on Sunday 8th September it was time for Charity Cycle in aid to the DGRI Neo Natal Unit. The boys cycled 64 miles to replicate the 64 days son, , spent in the Neonatal Unit in DGRI earlier this year. They cycled from Scroggiehill

• Farm to DGRI and back, twice to complete the 64 miles. This is fantastic achievement and well done once again to both . Thank you must also go to everyone who supported them on the day and who have donated to them. The club are very pleased to announce the boys have raised an amazing total of £4,400 for the DGRI Neonatal Unit.

• On Sunday 15th September took part in West Senior Beef

• Dressing at Stirling Market. They placed 3[rd] , allowing them to qualify for Nationals. Unfortunately, due to other commitments the pair could not attend national but well done to them both for doing some well in the competition.

• Tuesday 17th September saw the return of Speechmaking practices. Weekly practices have been well attended and preparation underway for upcoming D&G competitions.

October

• On the morning of Saturday 5th October, we set up this year’s Bale art next to the A75 at Blackerne Farm, by kind permission of John Wildman.

• Later that evening was D&G at the Cocoabean. This year we had S , take part in the Mr & Miss competition. Well done to for

placing third in the Member of the Year competition.

On Sunday 6th October we held our annual memorial football match. It was

great to see such a good turnout of people turn up to play and support. We raised £830 for CALM this year, another amazing amount to be able to donate to the charity this year.

• On Thursday 10th October, we kicked of concert practices. Practices were running twice a week with a cast of 18 members working hard and getting prepared to take to the stage with help from Producers .

• On Sunday 13th October we had a junior team – take part in D&G Lamb Dressing. The team did an amazing job coming away with second prize, allowing them to qualify for National later in the month, they battled through some bad weather and managed to get to national where the gained some great experience and are both excited to compete again in future competitions.

• This year Southwest Dairy show was on Wednesday 23rd October, where members went along to support and provide a refreshment stand. Thank you to our committee and members who helped out this year with this.

• On Sunday 27th October we had a junior team compete in D&G Speechmaking and Quiz. The Speechmaking team came away with 3rd place and the quiz team were 1[st] place. Both teams then went along to West on Saturday 9th November, the speechmaking team unfortunately did not place but the quiz team came 3rd place.

November

• On Friday 8th November, the D&G Stockjudging was held in Lockerbie Market. There was many in attendance from across the district and Stewartry did amazing with members coming away with 4 of the 6 prizes on offer!

• On Thursday 14th November we held our Panel Night at the Galloway Arms Hotel. Members enjoyed an engaging discussion with the panel made up of

• , with good attendance and feedback from all there.

• On Thursday 21st November,

  • travelled to South

• Machars Community Centre and took part in Country Cooks competition. Well done to the pair for placing first place.

• Sunday 24th November, we held a successful Soup and Sweet in Twynholm Village Hall. We had 45 people attending the event and raised money for our Charity of the year and club funds.

• On Wednesday 27th November, members were invited along to Castle Douglas Fire Station, we had 16 members in attendance who all gained some valuable insights into the work of the local fire service.

December

• On Sunday 1st December, D&G Senior Speechmaking and Quiz was held once again in Twynholm Village Hall. We had 2 senior teams in attendance, with the team of

• placing second in both the speechmaking and the quiz

qualifying them for west.

• Friday 13th December was our Christmas Night out at the Laurie Arms Hotel. 22 members attended bringing the 2024 years events to a close in a festive manner and enjoying a lovely meal and social evening.

January

• On Sunday 12th January, 10 members gathered at Auchenleck Farm by kind permission of the Marshall family for farm safety training. This training delivered by Morven Nelson covered general farm safety and animal safety and helped all know what to in different situations and emergencies on farm.

• On Friday 31st January and Saturday 1[st] February we held our Concert ‘Wicker-Person’ in Twynholm Village Hall. Both nights were a success and seen over 100 people in the audiences. The cast put on a speculator show, well done to all who took part. Special thanks to for producing the concert this year. After

Saturday’s performance there was a dance in the hall to celebrate a successful weekend.

February

• On Sunday 2nd February, we had a senior team – , take part in West Speechmaking. They placed 6th place, and Amy won the award for the ‘best speaker out with the winning team’, well done The quiz team unfortunately did not place. Thanks to for their help coaching the teams this year.

• After a week off from concert practices, on Monday 10[th] February, we held our first talent spot practice at Rhonehouse Village Hall. For the cast of 18, Practices have been ongoing twice a week in preparation for the D&G Qualifier on Saturday 15[th] March. Thanks also to for producing this years Talent Spot.

• On Saturday 15[th] February we held our annual Dinner Dance at the Cocoabean. It was great to see 55 people in attendance to have a lovely meal, enjoy a speech by , celebrate another successful year for the club and dance the night away.

• Finally on Friday 7[th] March, some members travelled to Newton Stewart Market to compete in the D&G Calf Rally. Congratulations to all members for turning out some great stock and to all those who placed in their classes. A special mention to who won Best Stockperson of the day.

The year was brought to an end with 2025/2026 AGM being held on 13[th] March 2025 with the new committee being elected for the upcoming year.

Statements of the Stewartry Young Farmers Club.

I report on the financial statements of the Charity for the year ended 31[st] January 2025, which are attached to rear of document.

Respective responsibilities of the management committee and independent examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) 2005 Act and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity’s management committee consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10 (1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanation from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently, I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts. I have carried out such investigations as were necessary to enable me to form an opinion as to whether proper accounting records adequate for the purposes of the Charity have been kept and the financial statements of the Charity were in accordance with the accounting records.

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

Notes to the accounts

Nature and purpose of funds held:

Funds are held in a current account towards the club activities, which further personal development, cultural education, and training of young people to make rural life more attractive to the young members of the community. Funds include the memberships paid by members, the income and expenditure for the programme of activities, the proceeds of fundraising activities, such as Stewartry Show, Soup and Sweet and Stock judging. Most funds are unrestricted apart from the charitable activities in year of The Football challenge and the Charity challenge where £4400 was raise for the DGRI Neonatal unit.
