Review of the ear 2024 25 As my year as secretary comes to an end I have taken the time to reflect on another fantastic year for Avondale Young Famers. This }Tpar kicked off in the traditional manner in the sandford hall kitchen. welcomed the new committee and thanked last year's top team for all their hard work and acknowledged that we had very big shoes to fill as had just led the club through a phenomenal ye￿. Then it was time for the most important Inb nf the evening, nominating our bus and tea convpr". oi"s. taking on the tea convenor dutipq ably and passing the baton on the bus convening duties to The date for our first committee rneeting was set and it was time to get the ball rolling on what was to be a big aJ]niversary year for the Dale. When we arrived at Benwillen on the 20th of March we were prepped for a marathon of planning the year ahead. 3 hours of productive conver8ation of what we want to do for the club and its members in its 80th year. Following this meeting I was apprehensive to say the leaft ,?l)ULII what ii."as in store. So I was straight on the phone to past secretary ho's wealth of knowledge about the club and how li) run it lias been < invaluable help to me in my year as secretary. With My mind put at ease I was straight down to business planning the year ahead. A8 we began the year there were a number of successes for our talented musicians and singers who took their Scottish thetned front of curtain act to west talent spot and came home with the win. There is no denying the talent oozes out of the daje and to be recognised for this is an honor. Our first meeting was set for the I lth of April, Our f￿st new members night in chapelton church hall. With new members invited and my brain racked for game ideas we were Set for a night of fun and a photo scavenger hunt. With a fantastic turnout of over 50 people and 20 new members it was amazing to see 60 many people keen to get involved in what Avondale has to offer. Next up on our events list was our annual football and netball tournament. Again held in conjunction with East Kilbride YFC. Hosting this event with another club was a great success as it sp]its the cost for the club and the admin for the secretaries in half. I drew the short straw on the evening while Jordan assisted East kilbride's 8ecretary Emily keep the I I teams organised at the netball in Strathaven leisure centre. I had the delightful job of keeping the 8 teams of boys in check in the not so sunny "Gow" The results on the night were as follows. Netball: 1st - Avondale I 2nd - Bathgate 3rd - Biggar I

Football: I st - Lesmahagow red 2nd - Kilmaurs 3rd - Avondale I It was amazing to see the ￿rIS bringing the trr)phy home again to where it and belongs.. home. We must also thank ￿￿whO were our netballing umpires for the night. As always in yc)ung larttiers we ran the football with an honesty policy so no refs were required! Success all round would be the only way to sum up the eventl Keeping with the sporty theme we hosted our annual volleybajl tournament on Tuesday the 25th of June at the Ali mccoist centre in East Kilbride. The results were as follows: Ist-EK2 2nd-EKI 3rd - Avondale I This event wasn't supported well by other clubs in the district which was slightly disappointing however thanks must go to EK YFC who turned out with two tcams. The sporting Suttess of our teams went from strength to strength with our football and netball teams coming out on top at Lanarkshire sports. A fantastic achievement for the club after a few quiet years for our football team. Throughout the spring our TOW teatns continued to train away quietly in the background. The tough training all paid off and our girls came out on top at Lanarkshire and made it all the way to the national final at the Highland show. This was a proud moment to stand on the sideline as someone who does not have a sporty bone in her body and watch the hard work of our sporty spices pay off. The dedication that our convenors and team members have does not go unnoticed. Next up in our busy summer schedule was our mock auction at Kittymiiir fann by kind permission of the Fleming family. This event was the most nerve-racking for me as a non-farmer, but with great support from past member he evening went on without a hitch. The results on the niglit weA"e: Junior Club:

There is no rest for the wicked at this time of year and Ayr show rolled around quicker than we could have iznagined. A much anticipated weekend in the calcndar for most of our members. Our handierafts team of and myself got our articles together willi ilie support Oth￿nd managed to come home with second prize in the webl di.ea Lompetition. We also managed to pick up the best appearance and display at the RHS for our set up. I have been involved with our handicrafts team consistently for the l O years that I have been a member, unsure how as I can't sew to save myself. Next up was our highly competitive annual car treasure hunt. This saw a few Ayr show hangovers be put to the test. The organisation of this event was made very easy as we have a very dedicated route maker who has been creating the questions for over 20 years and without Marion i think we would be lost... literally. With a turnout of 35 cars it was a very successft evening and the winners were delighted to take the trophy and the bragging rights for the year. I st - The Ballies 2nd - The Halls {Carlukel 3rd- Caroline Leggate and co Wooden spoon- A wet start to June put a bit of a 8panner into the 8ummer syllabus with our sport8 night being reorganised twice and ultimately cancelled due to the weather was disappointing but we were still able to pull a "mystery meeting. in our trusty Sandford Hall out the bag on this evening to ensure that we didn t lose the interest of our younger members in particular. This really put my quick thinking skills to the test. Highland show week was finally upon us and again our members pulled it out the bag in showing everyone just how good we are. There were m5￿Y prizes won by our members across the week including: Handicraft8 Best Appearance + Display - Lisa and Sean Dunbar Rocking Chair - 3rd place - Lisa Dunb

Stockjudgng Best Overall Beef Pair - Stockman of the year - Lanarkshire A team - 3 The following week saw our anniversary field day which wa8 a fantastic event with fun for all past present and fll￿re mernbers of the club with an °it'8 a knockout" obstacle course and all 80 year8 of photos and scrapbooks on display. I particularly enjoyed this event as the anniversary cornmittee really pulled through in helping organise such a big event, it was rrice to take a deep breath and have a little less responsibility on the day compared to the other events hosted through the year. July saw more success for our keen stockjudgers, coming away with various prize8 at IAnarkshire district and other clubs, stockiudging. I have absolutely no clue when it comes to stock of any kind bo much prefer to stay behind the marking spreadsheet especially when is making her debut as chief marker. It's so good to see SOLne JUlliL)i' Jiiembers getting involved in the stoclcn18nship programme as it reEJJly integrates them into the district very quickly and seamlessly. Next in our club calendar was our golf tournament. After I was struck down with illness I had to pass the reins over to the rest of the committee to run the event on one of the wettest nights we have seen all year and that is a tough competition. That being said the night was a great SUCCe88 and that 18 down to the committee and gave me the peace of mind that everything would smoothly in Tny absence. Results on t.he night were: Next up we had our end of summer new member8 night in our trusty sandford hall. This event was another well attended meeting with the young team out in force arld 33 people in attendance. It's great to see so many people wanting to come and see what we're ajl about. As the end of summer approached so did the busiest three weeks of my life. Our stockjudging, Strathaven show and charity hunted event fell one week after another and put my organi8ation skills to the test. Stockjudging hosted by the Currie Family at Blackbog was a fantastic night with 175 judgers. The night ran seamlessly, and was a great night of stock and socialising. This event alongside the mock auction was the one I was most nervous to organise as a non-farnier, with not many connections to the

farming world but the local businesses that 8pon8ored us. the farnier and the committee gave me a huge help that ajlowed us to m8Jie this night such a success even if the farni had no power until the last minute. The results were as follows: Under 14's: Juiiior Ladies.. Senior Ladies: Open L2die2'. Juiiior Genls-. Senior Gp.ntq' ILII

Tcams.. The first Saturday in September is always a special one in the Avondale district. StrathAven show, charity speed shear and show dance are a sign that summer is over. During the day we had a stand at the show with lots for everyone to take part in. This year good weather saw a very busy show and it was great to explain to people what we as a young farniers club actually do and what people could gain from the organisation. 6pm quickly rolled around and it was time to get our Speed shear underway this year in aid of our chosen ch￿lty Wishaw General neonatal unit. Past chair James Hamilton got the crowd going. and we ivere underway with great success. A special thanks must go to who helped with the organisation of this event. Without these peoplL' and their knowledge events Like these would not go ahead. The change over of the tent from catering to speed shear and dance was no easy task but we found that giving every helper a 8pecific job to complete made this so much easier and allowed me a￿d chair Jordan to fight the small r￿eS that cropped up and communicate with bouncers. DJ, shearers and spectators knowing that everything else was taken care of. This day will be a trne highlight in my young fanners career. To have one of the busiest show dance post lockdown thanks to the gaggle of irish exchanges gnd no major issues really shows how well our committee Work together and they are all a credit to themselves and the club. Never did I think we would ever run out of water at a show dance but again we can thank the Irish for that one. The Following weekend it was time for our cljarity Hunted event. This event was introduced a couple of years ago and is always highly anticipated. With no phone, money or belongings our teams were to make it across the west region making it to Specific checkpoints before heading back home all in aid of our chosen charity. This is a risk assessment that every secretary dreads but it always ends in a silly story to tell, For this event there was a sub-committee of to organise the tine aetails 0£ this event. I'his took soine prebbure away Irom me at a very busy time of year which I trnly appreciate. The Team did a fantastic job and really put the teams to the test by adding in checkpoints at opposite ends of the country to put them off the scent. The next morning a few of our crafty kings and queens headed to Overton to take part in the prestigious Lanarkshire Root and Grain competition. Lots of tickets were collected by the team and most notably the four8ome8 team managed to bag third place with their °European summer. set up.

Throughout September we also worked alongside the Muscum in Strathaven to put on an exhibition to celebrate the 80 2nniversary year. This was a fantastic opportunity for the club to engage with the local community and see how the club has changed and grown throughout this time. Another weekend saw another YF event, this time the glad rags were looked out as. and myself headed to The Strathaven Hotel to compete in Lanarkshire Mr and Miss. With arriving with minute8 to spare before his interview after a day at the market my nerves were shot to say the least. Wc both managed to get our points across in our interview and even got to bring up his beloved Rangers Football Club as a talking point. We both came away with third place in our respective categories on the night. A Proud moment for us as Chair and Secretary. This year we hosted our quiz night in conjunction with Lanarkshire District. Thi8 was a fantastic night full of competitive brain boxe8. Thanks must go to Ian walker for being our question master on the night. The results were as follows: Senior: Junior: Now firnlly into the winter syllabus myself and Jordan discussed what the best way to get the most out of our Tuesday night meetings, we decided to go for an idea that we saw other clubs had found a suecess. Dividing our committee into pairs and asking them to organise one meeting in the winter syllabus. This has taken an immense amount of pressure off myself and we have lots of varied and fun club meetings off the back of this. Next up for our traditional meetings was our bowling night at Hollywood bowl in Coatbridge. This is nornially an evening of nonsense and this ye was no different with the older boys coming up with evermore "creative" ways of getting a strike each year. se.nior CJent8'. Junior Gents:

Senior Ladies: Junior Ladies: October means only one thing for Avondale and that is concert practice is backl This year slightly later as we also had a full anniversary concert. Thks concert was a great success and it was great to Share the stage with so many past members and got me really excited for our club concert in January. At the beginning of November we hosted an exchange from Udny young fanners. This was a fantastie weekend with 16 exchanges making the journey down for a fantastic weekend of farm tours, footgolf and a ch￿lty shop pub crawl. Thi8 weekend wa8 organised and facilitated by my right hand woman and she truely pulled it out the bag. I have full confidence that ￿will have no issues when she becomes secretary if this event is anything ro go by. It was great to see that we could network with another SAYFC club and I would encourage any future committee to consider this too. Throughout the year we have had great interest in all three animal dressing competitions. Girls team of came out on top at Lanarkshire and progressed riglii tlie way tknough to the national competition where they placed second, Dairy cattle dressing saw four teams competing in the Lanarkshire competition and they came home with an Avondale 1,2,31 A fantastic achievement. EmIiia and Isobel and Mark and Harvey progressed to nation81 level where placed second. Having lots of keen junior rnembers intereste(i ￿ these competitions is fantastic and hopefully this stays the salne for year8 to come. Some of our winter meetings that we hosted were: Carpet BowLs- a highly anticipated and competitive evening that everyone always loves. This year Angus was out of luck and only managed to get his team second place when put up against Stevie Callan and his teatn!

Movie and Pizza night- Orga￿lsed by Sarah and Rebekah, we put masterchef hats on and had a night in sandford hall watching a classic film Step brothers. Mr and Mrs evening - We asked 4 couples from various eras of the club to come along and put their relationships to the test. It tum8 Out that writing questions that won't cause a domestic is harder than it seems. I was a little disappointed in the turnout for this event with only a handful of past members coming along to support, but a fun night was had by all who were there. Whist drive- another classic avondale winter meeting that was supported by all our usual suspects. A fantastic event for the older generation to really show us how it's done. Split meeting - organised by Assistant Secretary Emma and Vice Chair David. The ￿rIS headed rollerbladÈng in Glasgow then to a cocktail/ mocktail making class by Willie Cuthbertson in the Chapelton Inn. while the boys headed paintballing before heading back to the pub to join the girls for a club social evening. This was a great day enjoyed by everyone who attended. Pantomime - 24 of our members headed into Glasgow to see Aladdin. This was a fantastic night had by all. T1￿)kS to Chloe for organising. With Concert Practises in full swing December rolled around pretty quickly. This year we hosted a coffee morning in aid of our chosen charity. We decided on a Knit and Natter theme as we used this time to knit hats that we could donate to the unit as well as our monetary donation. This was a fantastic day and look out for all th¢ knitting that will be featured in our future handierafts displays. Christmas jumper dance was a night for all the committee to let their hair down. Hosted in ROC nightclub as this is the only reliable venue in the distiict allowed us all to have a fun night getting in the Christma8 Spirit. With the festivities over it was time to get down to business for the big one... Concert week. Our cast of 48 strong reajly rallied together to pull off a fantastic perforniance of "Pools, Politics and Poor Perfonnances" even if the odds were against us on the week where everything seemed to go wrong. Having to cancel our Friday night performance due to an unprecedented storm didn't dampen our spirits and all our hard work paid off after we werc crowned Lanarkshire c.oiicti I ()f Ili¢ production team of i¢ai'. A Ilianks must go to our ener￿ and ideas froTn t Without the passion, Iis ui) li-e ￿ll)Uld iiot liaiie a show and VTe are truly grateful for all their hard work. Our Concert Secretary￿ and her a8SIStant￿ did a fantastic job at keeping all of us in linc and worked tirelessly to get the show on the stage. Our Ticket convenor got plenty of bums on Seats and rearranged plenty of people after our cancellation to

ensure as many people saw our hard work as possible. A8SlStant treasurer Lewis was in charge of programTnes and did a smashing job at rounding up loc81 businesses for a little bit of support. ￿ made a fantastic job on our scenery and it all came together. Concert has been my favourite part of my young farmers career and this year it was cemented. A privilege to be a part of and going to the Lanarkshire talent spot with my Maggie wig to perform our "80's Britain in a Tango" performance was a highlight. Even if it has confirnied that I will never suit being blonde. This year's concert also featured a drama as per tradition in an avondale concert. A Hilarious play produced by Jimmy and Eleanor Anderson. As a drama newbie I had a great time learning the play with the ca8t. We have been disappointed that this won* be seen again at west drama festival due to lack of interest from elsewhere in the district. We would encourage other clubs to take the plunge 8nd just go for it. You might find out something about yourself in the process. Just ask A highlight of this anniversary year has been our dinner dance. With 230 people sat for dinner to celebrate the mighty Dale it was a phenomenal evening catching up with people we haven't seen in a while. Credit to the anniversary committee for pulling off such a fantastic event. AnoLher successful year for AYFC is almost over and what a 8ucce8sful year it has been. Wpst Sp.eprhrn8kin(y eechmalcjiio I".cll'l-sliirc Trqorn oneert EndpayouL& As ray year at the top is coming to an end l am proud to see that Avondale continues to go from strength to strength. We so much more than what we say on the tin and I would encourage anyone considering taking on an office bearer role or getting involved in a new event to just do it. You will only benefit from it down the line. Throughout the year, the attendance of members at each event continued to grow with a minority of events where member8 didn't turn out in the usual force. I do believe the continued work of the committee and office bearers is the reason for this success and they have been a massive asset to the club. I also believe continued presence acro88 social media has also played a massive part in driving awareness of events. This year has been a Particularly busy one and we have had lots in the calendar. In hindsight would have maybe reduced the number of events and taken a quality not quantity approach to meeting planning. With thi8 in mind it is becoming extremely difficult to manage the rocketing costs for members and I believe the club did a great job of giving back to members this year with some extra subsidising to ensure events and activities are kept affordable. I believe the club should continue to review costs of events and make sensible decisions based on what 18 fca8ible and what's not in the current elin￿te. All this being S￿d. there a number of people who have supported both and I during our year in the hot seat. Firstly our committee, you have been a dream to work with and have been a genuine gilPPOrt to us when we have needed you. No silly request too big or too small. You are all a massive credit to the club and yourselves. Gail, our woman in charge of the money. You are fantastic at what you do and have been a dream to work with. Always one step ahead of the game. Thank you for your effort in a task that is not an easy one.

Next I would like to th8fLk my a8SlStant sccretary is a true asset to this club and is a force to be reckoned with. k ler dedic.ation and passion for the club is phenomenal and has not gone unnoticed. I have no doubt in my mind that Avondale will go frotn strength to strength with you leading the way. Thank you for being there to support me in every way shape or form and I genuinely mean it when I say I couldn't have done this year without you. Thank you again. I would also like to thank the management COTnmittee again this year. You guys have provided ama2ing support throughout the year to rnyse￿ and Jordan as well a8 the club. Having the support network of such a knowledgeable team of past members trnly has helped us navigate our way through the year. Last but not lea8t I'd like to thank my chairnian Jordan. Thank you for always being at the other end of the phone when I have inevitably forgotten to do something, have a silly question or just needed some reassurance. Thank you for being the voice of reason when I am catastrophizing a situation arLd rolLing with the punches of my ups and downs. You really have been a great friend as well a8 chair this year. You have been a role model to younger members with your h￿d work and dedication while in the role and l am glad I got to sit alongside you this year. Ann you can have him back now. If you would have told me just three years ago that T would be sitting where I am tonight I would have laughed in your face. Avondale Young Farniers is unlike anything else I have ever been a part of and has been a saving grace in what has been a particularly tough 12 months for me pcrsonally. I would like to th8nk every single person who has made thks year a little bit easier. I was petrified at the start of the year that I did not have enough experience to do the job and looking back I have given it my all and don't think I have done too bad a job and that is down to the people who have surrounded me. It has been a privilege to be your secretary this year and I carl not wait to see what's next for the Dale. I would like to wish Emma and David the best of luck for their year ahead. You will be amazing. Avondale it's been a privilege to be your seeretary.
