The beginnlng of the 2025126 year saw closure of the exhlbltion at the Mltchell LlbTary marklng the 150th annlversary of the death
of Alexander'Greek' Thomson. Wlth asslstsnce from Gl6sgowLive a￿d the Sau¢hiehall Culture and Herltage Dlstrlct, a ponel-only
version of the exhibltion ¥Ya5 d15played at thelr project offlce In Sauchlehall Street for a further th￿e weeks in January 2026,
accompan￿& by an evening talk on Thomson's life and work.
The Sccrety 5UPPOrted the 2025 Doors Open Day Festival vlfth two tèlks, plus attendance at l Moray Place, spèce5 at whlch,
together with the Double Vllla. ¥vere fully takeTTr up wlthln hours of bwklngs openlng. A planrled opening of St Vlncent StrÈet Church
as unfortunatety cancelled by the Cty Coun¢ll at short notlce.
AS previously, the major LJuildings of concern to the SocSety thls year were those of past years. wlth a focus on St Vincent St￿t
Church and Egyptlaft Halls.
EgyptF•n Halls
The A-llst￿ Egyptlèn Halls remalned a concem through the year, although a proposed Compulsory Purchase Order rnay e5tsbllsh
nrm future for the bU1￿1n￿. Egyptlan Halls h35 been on the ￿1}dIng5 at R￿k RegSster slntr 1990, wlth scaffololng In place on the
Union St￿t frontage for some twenty years. In January 2026, Glasgow City Councll proposed to proceett wlth a Compulsory
Purchase Order (CPOI, wlth Edlnburgh-based property firm Ediston as the preferrecj bioder.
Ediston seeks to transform the bullding into 8 mixed-u5e developrnent featuring a Scottlsh food market and a 70-bedroom
apartment hotel and has secured two anchor tenants. The propos815 incorporate a nesy roof pavilion, cotnpkmentlng the hlstorfc
faEade, providing additional hotel rooms and amenlty spatt.
The declslon to proceed wlth the CPO has been protested by the bulldlng's current owner.
st Vlncent street Ckurch
The Society began vlork on a Business Case covering the futu￿ of St Vincent Street Church, exploring then potential for the building
to be brought back into use 85 bDth a secular end rellgious space. The Business Case ha5 been developed by Communlly Enterprise
with funding from the Glasgow City Heritage Trust. as byell as pto bDnO supporl frorn Scott AbErcromble and Flona Slnclair. An
exhlbitk>n at the Sauchlehall st￿et Culture and Heritage Dlstrlct project office ran for several weeks Irom March 2026, wlth publ1¢
responses supportlng mixed secular/religiou5 Use wlth bullding ov4ner5hlp retalned by Glasgow Clty Councll wlth governance by an
existing or new body. The completed Buslness Case and condltlons 5tvOy Is due to be presented to the Council by the end of

We engaged wlth the Clty Councll over the loss of the'Buck5 Head Bulldlng. letterlng followlng renovation works. Although the
crlglnal letterlng appears to have been lost, Ilke-for-likÈ replacetnent letterlng was subsequently InstsIl￿.
Egyptlan Halls
The Clty Councll took a declslon In late 2026 to move forward with a Cornpulsory Purchase Order for Egyptian Halls. Whlle the
decision has been challenged ID public by Oerek Souter, who owns the buildino, the process would appear to be proceeding in the
absence of any agreement between Mr Souter and the cornpany that proposes to ￿Store and re-use the building.
Grecian Charnber5
The sudden closure of the Centre for Conternporary Arts in January 2026 leaves Thornson's Greclan Chambers wlth only o Coup￿ of
the ground floor shop un￿5 occupied at the time of writlng. Swlft steps were taken to secure the bulldlng. A declsion by Creative
scotlat￿ on Its future Is awaltecs, although its conUr*ued use as a Mu￿1-pUr￿￿)$e creative arts venue wouhl appear to be the most

2026, with a vlew to a potsntial gite vlslt or talk on the works as they progress.

We sought to en9age with the planned re-development of the former Mccorquodale's Prlntlno Works on Howard Street, which was
Intended for a hotel complex. The building includes Thomson-de51gned railings for the Saracen Foundry and has some
Thornsone5que features, although the bulldlno does not appear to have been designed by him. Although we recelved no response to
our approach, the initlal plans, propc5ing full demolition and replacement by a new building. have been relected by the Council.

Led by forffler Chalr Scott Abercromb￿ and Flona Slnclalr, a worklno group to explo￿ options for St Vincent St￿et Church w8$
formed during the year, drawlng on a wide range of experience and expertise. With flnancial support frotn Gl45gow City Herltsge
Trust, and pro bono asslstance from Scott and Fiona, a 8usines5 Case was developed by Douglas Westwater of Cemmunity
Enterprise for submlssion to the City Cauntil in late 2026. A5 part of public consultstion on the Buslness Case, the Society staged an
exhibition between 17th March an(J Ilth Aprll 2026 at the Sauchiehall Culture & Heritage District Project Offitr In Sauchkhall Street.
Publlc responses to the consultation Indlcated that 62% We￿ in favour of future mixed secular/religious use for the bulldlng, wlth
28% In fa¥our of secular use only, an(J Iowts In favour of other, usually unspecmed, evenl or comtnunity use. There were no
responses In favour of religlous-only use.
In tem?s of future governance, likely to be key to any future manjgernent of the bulldlngi 33% were In favour of governante by a
5Ultable new organi5ation and 53% In favour of governance by a suitable Èxisting organisation. In either case, the role of the City

During the year, the cloorplece trom the Bell Streer entrance to the demollshed w8￿hoUse$ on Watson and Bell Street was relocated

In support of Doors Open Dayi we planned to be present at 5t Vincent Street Church and l Moray Place. although the planned
openlng of the church did not go ahead at a late stage owlng to a concern around health and safety for younger vlsitors. Both Moray

In December 2025 we sent a copy of the Th0rn50n150 parnphlet produced alongslde the Thom50n150 exhlbitlon to all members of
the Clty Councll, Glasgow MPS and MSPS, together wtth a Covering letter, to provide background Informatlon on Thomson and hi5
work In Glasgow. This led to a meeting wlth one coundllor and an M5P on Thomson-related 15sue5.
During the year the Soclety engaged with tswner5 of different Thomson bulldlnps, Including at least two where major repalrs or
renovations are required or being undertaken. We took into store sorne door5 frorn Alllson Street when that tenement was belng
restored and obtained a stnaller door or panel from the Double Villa, courtesy of its owr)er. We also began explorlng the posslbillty of
taklng photographs of the Interlors of Thomson bulldlngs, especially where orSglnal pkasterwork, doors and windows or jolnery rnay

We staged an exhlbltlon at the Mttchell ULirary from 14th Mareh to 26th Apnl 2025 to commemorate the 150th annIVe￿ary of
Thom50n's death. We staged a programme of Thomson-related talks during the exhlbition, whlch was staged wSth support from the
Mrtchell Library and in¢￿￿ded Thotn50n-related mate￿alS from the knbrary's Special Collections. Alongsidè the exhiiJition, we produced
Thomson150 parnphlet basers on the exhibltron panel5.
