Governance and Management Constitution
The charity began as a community group in 1998 and then a Committee was formed and a Constitution adopted. The first Fèis ran for four days in July 1999.
Charitable Purposes and Objectives.
Fèis Arainn is a festival of traditional music, culture and language carried out in an easy, noncompetitive way with fun and games included. We offer traditional music tuition and a Gaelic arts experience to young people from the age of eight. Participants have the opportunity to try out or improve their skills in a number of musical instruments, song and drama and shinty as well as giving them experience of the Gaelic language which was of course the first language of Arran residents in earlier times. In this way they are reminded of the heritage of the island and, we hope, encouraged to keep the language and the spirit of Gaelic alive.
Fèis Arainn is an event open to young people from the age of eight which takes place during the last week of July. Over the 4 days participants will have the opportunity to try out or improve their skills in a number of musical instruments, song, drama, art and shinty as well as improving their Gaelic language skills. Beginners are very welcome at all our events, and those who already play an instrument or sing will also find the experience very rewarding. We aim to cater for all abilities, right up to accomplished musicians and singers. You don’t need to be able to read music and you don’t need to have any previous knowledge of traditional music to enjoy a Fèis. Workshops are taught by ear with participants learning tunes and songs one phrase at a time.
Participants will select 3 choices + one reserve choice when registering.
Each ‘first choice’ class will prepare a piece for our end of the week concert and will be attended twice a day. Every effort will be made to ensure participation in chosen subjects however some participants may be offered their reserve choice to deliver age and ability appropriate tuition. All our tutors are experienced, professional musicians, skilled in working with young people. Our committee and volunteers help our events run smoothly. Children are supervised at all times, and we work in accordance with Child Protection and Health & Safety Guidelines.
The organisation’s purposes are to advance the musical education of young people living on the Isle of Arran; to promote our national heritage and culture; and to increase public exposure to, appreciation of, and involvement in music and the performing arts.
This will be done by:
• Encouraging participation, nurturing talent, and providing musical tuition and activities which support or enhance existing provision by the North Ayrshire Council Music Service.
• Providing opportunities for young people on Arran to come together to participate in, experience, learn from and enjoy musical performance opportunities of the highest standards.
• Providing young people with the opportunity to engage with, learn and perform traditional Scottish music and associated instruments.
• Providing opportunities for young people to engage with professional musicians and performance through attending concerts, shows and the like (on Arran and beyond) and participating in workshops.
• Working with the wider community to engage new audiences by encouraging their attendance at and participation in music rehearsal, concerts and community music making.
