ACHIEVEMENTS

2025 has been another busy and successful year for Culter Theatre Club.

The year started with preparations for the summer production of " Seriously Ballroom – A Murder Mystery ”. Following the successful run of our inaugural murder mystery – Murder on this Disorientated Express , this new production was directed by Carla Barber and Hilary Esson, with a cast of fifteen. Tickets for the four night run over two weekends in June sold out completely. We were delighted with the feedback received and to make a financial surplus from the production. Donations from our generous audiences raised £1500.00 which was donated to our chosen charity - the Forget Me Not Club . Based in Banchory, the charity provides support to those living with and caring for people with dementia in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. The Trustees extend their thanks to our incredibly talented cast and backstage team for all their efforts, and to everyone who supported the production.

The 2024 report highlighted that critical in 2025 would be the replacement of the majority of our stage lighting assets that were becoming redundant either through age or wear and tear. Funding opportunities were explored and an application was made to the Foundation Scotland and Vattenfall ‘ Unlock our Future ’ Fund. We were delighted to announce in September that we were awarded a grant of £7,478.31. Vattenfall, operator of the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, provide the fund to support projects in Aberdeen City and Shire that contribute towards a climate smart future, investment in environmentally sustainable community spaces, and ensures a legacy and benefit to the local community. The Vattenfall grant has allowed us to upgrade all our existing fixtures through the purchase of twenty-six modern LED replacements (including profiles, parcans, and four moving lights) and new cabling and safety bonds throughout. The system is now more environmentally friendly, cheaper to run, notably cooler, and safer to operate, whilst giving us the ability to be more creative in our lighting designs. With thanks to Helen Pendlowski we were able to have all the new lighting installed and operating correctly ahead of our panto in December. The Committee are very grateful for this financial support, and thank Foundation Scotland and Vattenfall for backing our project.

In August, auditions were held for the 2025 pantomime - " Peter Pan & the Pirates ". With yet another significant turnout, the level of talent was exceptional. The well-crafted script was written in-house by Kerwin Robertson who also directed the show. Lindsey Masson returned to the role of Musical Director, teaching and scoring songs as well as leading our brilliant band; and Carla Barber as Choreographer introducing more intricate routines to keep the cast on their toes. An amazing cast of seventeen seniors and nineteen juniors made use of every inch of the stage. As with previous years, it was great to welcome a number of new members to the Club. Each and every member of the cast gave an outstanding performance and are commended for their efforts. A special mention goes to Steph Wild for directing and editing our one-of-a-kind ‘in-flight safety video’ which starred our suitably attired Graeme Mackay and was incredibly well received by everyone. Not forgetting all those working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the production together, including a very welcome few new faces to the stage crew. We were delighted to sell 1235 tickets meaning a 99% turnout. There was a wealth of positive feedback from our audiences and this was reflected in a brilliant Show Report from our NODA Rep - Douglas. The ticket sales ensured that we were in a healthy financial position moving into 2026. Well done everyone and thank you to all who supported the production.

Throughout the year CTC has supported other groups in bringing their productions to Culter Village Hall. In July Fleeman Productions presented “ Fooshion ”, and we also provided stage crew and lighting for the Scottish Community Drama Association's, Aberdeen District Festival of One Act Plays. We were pleased to receive positive feedback from each group regarding the venue and facilities, and hope to welcome them all back soon.

The Committee continued to explore opportunities for CTC branded merchandise, and a preferred supplier was identified. We now have new polo-shirts for our backstage and production teams, and a plan for further merchandise in 2026. Thanks to Jamie Gordon for his work on this.

After a long period of absence, CTC rejoined the Scottish Community Drama Association in 2025 and a small team (Carla Barber, Erik Esson, Jamie Gordon, Nina Mackay, and Steph Wild) was formed to submit an entry to the 2026 Festival of One Act Plays. With rehearsals taking place throughout the winter, the team presented “Right on Cue” by Barry Lambert, at the District Festival at Culter Village Hall in February where they were rightful recipients of the prize for Best Moment of Theatre. With a few challenges along the way – the team reprised their performance and represented the Club at the Divisional Festival in Orkney at the start of April. The team earned a very respectable score up against tough and experienced competition, and should be commended for their efforts throughout. Well done.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Club in 2025.

THE YEAR AHEAD

At the first meeting of 2026 the Committee agreed that following the success of similar genre plays, the summer production would be the “ Vicar of Dibley ”. Kerwin Robertson and Hilary Esson are directing the production, and rehearsals are underway with Ashley Mildon in the title role leading a strong cast of nine. The production is scheduled for four nights in June with tickets on sale very soon.

Looking further ahead, with the panto season very shortly thereafter, the Committee has decided that the 2026 show will be 'Sleeping Beauty' . Kerwin Robertson will explore script options and look to develop the range of roles available, and we are pleased that Lindsey Masson has agreed to reprise her role as Musical Director. An appeal to find a choreographer has been launched, with the search ongoing an appointment still to be made.

Culter Theatre Club looks forward to another busy year in 2026 - exceeding the standard of productions we are known for, inspiring people to get involved, and welcoming our regular and new audiences to enjoy!
