Objectlves and actlvities
Diinblane Museum was established by the Society of Friends of Dunblane Cathedral
In 1943 ii) what was the Deaii's House, a 17tli century biiildin& originally storiiig and
displaying the artefacts and archives of the mediaeval catliedral. The collection has
grown since then to include many inore items and artefacts from Dunblane, its people
and the sui'rounding area.
The Triist exists to present, care for, pi'omote and conserve for tliis and futiire
generatioiis tlie present collectioii and any new relevant items of local history, and
also of the Inodei'n town. The museum seeks to pi'ovide enjoyn)ent, recreational
learniiig, pei'sonal, and inforinal or formal study.
To that end, we provide materials and access for academic study and foi. those who
wlsh to research tlieii" family Iiistory, the history of their house, or the history of the
town.
Of particular interest is our extensive collection
of communioii tol(ens, wliicli attracts interest
fi'oni visitors and acadeinics alike.
Management and Volunteers
Diinblane Museiim is entirely run by voliinteers We Iiave a management teani, which
includes 2 Co-Directors, a Treasiii'er, a Collections Ciirator, (these 4 being Trustees
also) and others who manage the garden, maintenance of the building, the shop, and
social Inedia.
Tlie manageinent team meets regiilarly to review progress and to plan for the fiitiire.
Tliey work exti"eiiiely liard to review policies, produce voliinteei. rotas, aiid of coui'se
take care of tlie collections and accession new iteins. Tlie museum receives no
fundiiig from public bodies or from regiilar grants, and so we rely on tlie
contribiitions of visitors & supporters for the running costs of the Museum, wliich are
considerable.
Tliere is a large number of volunteers, although we always need more, who each do a
regular 3-houi' duty in the niuseum to welcoine visitors, provide information, and
handle sales in tlie gift shop. It gives us great pleasure that the museum receives
lovely reviews from visitors who comment on our interesting collection, the fact that
the museum is much bigger inside thali it appeal's from the outside and always there
are lovely compliments about how welcoming and lielpful the volunteers are.

Visitors
We normally open from the 1st of Api"il until mid-october, and on a few extra days up
to Chi'istmas or when groups request a visit at a pai'ticiilar time. In the past yeai.,
having managed to recruit more volunteers, we have beeli able to open 6 days a weeli
fi.om 10.30 to 16.30 as we did before Covid..
Our visitors come from the local area and from all over tlie world. In the past year we
have welcomed 6750 visitors, which is still a lower number than our pre Covid
numbei"s, but it is still climbing.
To infoi'm our visitors and advertise activities, we have an excellent website, social
niedia, adverts in a local magazine, and posters, where relevant.
We often have visits from groups - cliildren, history societies, clubs, students,
toiii'ists, etc. and, on request, we provide a presentation to clubs, schools, etc in their
owii pi'emises. This year in our closed season, we had several groups request a visit-
Edinburgli Scouts, Hei"lot Watt studeiits, 2 groups of trainee guides- and, as always,
we wei'e veiy happy to open up foi. them
Tlie museiim is open to all and free. There is a disabled entrance, and a lift.
We have printed giiides in many languages and also in Braille.
Tliere are activities for childi'en - For smaller childi'en, buildiiig bricks, a
jigsaw game, and especially popular, searching for mediaeval inice which
are hidden around the museum.
Foi. oldei. cliildren: we have a inuseuin qulz and also a local quiz which
includes the other historical buildings In the vicinity.
