The aim of Galloway Fisheries Trust is to restore and maintain aquatic biodiversity, particularly native fish, in Galloway by means of practical, responsible and sustainable approaches to land, water and fishery management, based on sound science, for the benefit of the community as a whole. The aims of our remit are met by undertaking practical works, education initiatives, focused research projects and delivering key services to member waters and the wider community. Evidence based management underpins this work program. The threats to freshwater ecosystems from climate change is well known and an important priority work stream for GFT is to increase the climate resilience of river systems to climate change impacts such as increased summer temperatures, regular droughts and more extreme floods.

Objectives: 2. The charitable purposes of the Company are the advancement of environmental protection or improvement: 2.1 By restoring and maintaining aquatic biodiversity, particularly native fish, in the Dumfries and Galloway and neighbouring regions by means of practical, responsible and sustainable approaches to land, water and fishery management, based on sound science, for the benefit of the community as a whole. 2.2 By providing advice, undertaking research and completing practical works to protect and enhance the natural ecology of the freshwater and estuarine habitats of the Dumfries and Galloway and neighbouring regions, with a particular emphasis on increasing resilience to climate change impacts. 2.3 By managing major schemes to improve the water quality of rivers in the Dumfries and Galloway and neighbouring regions, undertaking habitat enhancement work to benefit all native fish, flora and fauna and running education programmes for schools, colleges, communities and volunteers. For as long as the Company is entered on the Scottish Charity Register, its purposes may only be altered with the prior consent of OSCR and in accordance with any conditions attached to such consent.
