Recruitment and appointment of Trustees

All of the Society’s trustees are appointed and reappointed by the members at our annual general meeting, which is held in March each year.

Governing document

The Society is a charitable unincorporated association, and the purposes and administration arrangements are set out in our constitution.

Charitable purposes

Our purposes, as recorded in our constitution, are to promote the advancement of knowledge and education by the study of local history in the parish of Dunning.

Activities and achievements

As Chairperson, | have again been supported by all the committee and other supporters / contributors in the running of the Society.

We welcomed two new members to the committee, brought in to fill the vacant positions of Dunningite editor and archivist. The editor has now completed over a year of successful publications of our quarterly magazine. We also had another committee resignation who had provided longstanding catering support.

Our secretary has been an inspiration in booking great speakers and her artistic input to events has been immensely appreciated by all. However, due to health and family reasons, she has decided to take a lesser role on the committee. So, the committee roles are being adapted by splitting the secretary role and meetings organizer. We are delighted that in 2026 we now have two new committee members to take on two roles, but we are still short on an archivist.

Scottish Charity Number $C020518

We have again completed a year of regular, well-organised and well-attended monthly meetings on a wide variety of historical and informative topics. Full credit to our hardworking secretary and organising committee.

Again, we had a very successful musical “Scots Night” in January, a stand promoting the Society at the June ‘Little Dunning Market’, and a well-attended September day visit to the Dunfermline Abbey and Library and Andrew Carnegie Museum. We also had fundraising activities: a summer BBQ and an autumn coffee morning.

We continue to publish our full-colour quarterly ‘Dunningite’ magazine which is well received both locally, UK wide and internationally, which along with other publications which together create small local sales throughout the year.

Looking forward we, like many clubs, have a majority of senior members and need to try and attract younger members. We are developing a strategy to promote the society to younger people within the village, who can in the future continue to preserve the history and culture of our unique village and community.

Ongoing, the DPHS website, while very informative, would benefit from a format update. This is a big costly undertaking. We will have to think very carefully about how and when we change and only with the guidance of our current long-serving webmaster and IT expert.

Trustees’ remuneration and expenses

The trustees did not receive any remuneration or expenses during the year.

Reserves

The surplus for the year of £387 has been added to the Society’s general fund which totals £6,930. The trustees consider the general fund sufficient to continue normal activities.

Approved by the Trustees and signed on their behalf.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeks explanation from the trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently | do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: e to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44 (1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulation, and

  2. e to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

  3. have not been met, or

  4. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
