**Purposes:** 'the advancement of the arts, heritage, culture or science'

**What the charity does:** The society's office is open 2-4 p.m. each weekday. from end of January until the first week of December.  Other times are available through appointment.  During the summer, the Society volunteers who assist those who are interested in finding their Shetland roots, are kept busy during the open times with visitors from abroad.  The Society also holds an on-line conference which has proved popular to members both locally anbd abroad.  The Society is currently engaged in the development of its website which has included the publication of the Census on line.  The society also publishes its magazine four times a year which is sent out locally and abroad to those who wish a paper copy, and is published on the website for those who wish an electronic copy to be available to them.

**Objectives:** To promote the study of Family History and Genealogy in Shetland by:   •Studying, Analysing and sharing information on Shetland Individuals and       Families  •Maintaining links with other Family History Societies.  •Maintaining reference links with approved subscribers.  •Promoting study projects, special, interest and working groups
