Structure, Governance and Management Governing Document

Blantyre Old Parish Church is administered in accordance with the terms of the Unitary Deed of Constitution.

Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees

Members of the Kirk Session are the Charity Trustees. The Kirk Session members are the elders of the church and are chosen from those members of the church who are considered to have the appropriate gifts and skills. The Minister, who is a member of the Kirk Session, is elected by the congregation and inducted by Presbytery.

Organisational Structure

The Kirk Session which meets approximately nine times a year is responsible for spiritual and temporal affairs within the church, and certain responsibilities are delegated to the Pastoral Care Team, the Church Development Team and the Finance and Property Team. Each of these teams report to the Kirk Session on a regular basis.

Objectives and Activities

The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in doctrine. Reformed in tradition and Presbyterian in policy. It exists to glorify God and to work for the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom throughout the world. As a national Church it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty to bring the ordinances of religion to the people in every parish of Scotland througha territorial ministry. It co-operates with other Churches in various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond. The parish of Blantyre Old covers predominantly what is known as High Blantyre and works within Blantyre alongside Blantyre Livingstone Memorial and Blantyre St. Andrews, both Church of Scotland.

Achievements and Performance

Worship

The church family of Blantyre Old is varied with people of all ages and experience involved, numbering around 100-120 each Sunday. Sunday worship is held at 11am and we offer activities for the children within the Sanctuary at the beginning of the Service, where we provide written material and crayons etc. for their pleasure. Rev. Jim Murphy includes them in the Childrens’ address, thereafter they leave with the Sunday Club leaders and continue their spiritual journey in the Church halls.

Worship is varied with a mixture of traditional and contemporary styles, thereby meeting the needs of differing generations and personalities.

Rev Jim Murphy joined us at the beginning of 2021 as a locum minister and has been in this position ever since. Jim is welcomed by all who attend and excels himself in Pastoral Care. We have seen an increase in attendance and welcome many visitors on a week-on-week basis. Jim also has links with the local schools and youth groups in the Blantyre area. We often have the school service held within the Church.

Discipleship

We have various group activities within the Church. We have a Bible study group who meet weekly, we have a Leisure group who meet weekly, we have a Warm Welcome group which is open to the public weekly and we have a Craft group who meet on a Saturday morning. We also do after Service refreshments on a Sunday after worship and this is welcomed and very well attended by the congregation. These groups are found to be welcoming and appreciated by all who attend. Our halls are busy with weekly bookings from the local community and out with. We are booked Monday to Friday evenings and most afternoons, with regular groups.

We joined the local Churches for the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph where Rev. Jim Murphy and2 other local ministers conducted the Service, followed by refreshments, fellowship etc. afterwards in the local halls.

We welcomed the local Primary school for Services within the Sanctuary, conducted by Rev. Jim Murphy on a few occasions throughout the school year.

We hosted/joined other Churches for a Christmas Carol Service around the Christmas tree at the Miners Monument where we sang, celebrated and then shared refreshments, hot mince pies and home baking within our Church hall. This was enjoyed by all.

We held our annual Christmas Fayre within our Halls. We hada variety of stalls, with Church members and the community requesting tables, including the local Hospice selling its produce. We offered free selection boxes to all Children who attended anda free visit to Santa. After costs, we raised a staggering £2348.25, this was put towards Church funds. A massive thank you to all who attended and all who put the hard work in to making it happen.

We held a Christmas Eve Carol Service commencing at 11pm, taken by Rev. Jim Murphy, welcoming in Christmas Day.

We also held a Service on Christmas Day at 11am.

We held an afternoon Memorial Service conducted by Rev. Jim Murphy and this was attended by members of the public who had lost a family member or friend recently or in the past and wanted to remember them in Prayer and song. This Service was open to anyone wishing to attend for whatever reason.

Stewardship

We have seen an increase in our regular Sunday worshippers. We live stream our Services on Facebook each week and we have regular viewers home and abroad, as far as Canada and America. This enables anyone unable to attend morning Worship, to view online at their convenience.

Rev. Jim Murphy has done a number of weddings and funerals outwith our Church and this has encouraged some of those family members to join us in Church on a Sunday on a regular basis. We welcomed our new Interim Moderator, Rev. Alan Gibson to Blantyre Old on the 1“ of January and the Kirk Session look forward to working alongside him.

Warm Welcome — Wednesday Afternoons

The Warm Welcome has been going now for just over 3 years and is becoming more popular. We open on a Wednesday between 12-2pm and serve free soup, rolls with sausage, tea/coffee and sweet treats. We now have a local company offering free bus travel to and from the event on a weekly basis. We have various groups attending offering advice and guidance to the guests. We can now be accommodating around 60+ on a weekly basis. We offer companionship, friendship, laughter, celebration and we have a Prayer Space if anyone wishes to be prayed for or prayed with.

Malawi Church Team

In 2025 the Church and friends of the Malawi Group supported the Banana Box Trust by sending 37 boxes in container 16. Of the 37 boxes some were for Anita at “God Cares Orphanage’ and some to Wilford at Ekwendeni Hospital. Anita runs the orphanage for children of all ages, and she mostly gets school supplies, toiletries, clothing and football strips.

Wilford receives any medical supplies (not medication), blankets, sheets, toiletries and some clothing.

Our year started sadly with the sudden death of Anne Gemmell, but once we had a short break we called for help from our amazing packing team and we managed to send the boxes before the collection date in October. The container is due to arrive in January/February after lots of delays at borders etc.

Donations from our congregation and other friends of the Church are gratefully received. Some elderly friends often feel they cannot contribute to the everyday running of the Church; however, many have expressed how satisfying it is that they can do knitting, crocheting etc, enabling them to contribute in this way. The boxes are filled with toiletries (no liquids), baby knitted clothing, blankets, school supplies, football strips and so much more. Another volunteer kindly transported the boxes to Dundee with our donations, covering transportation costs.

In early December we received the sad news that Alan Laverock, the Scottish Director of the Banana Box Trust had died suddenly and that donations were stalled until arrangements could be made. The Dundee centre is now open again and in the coming weeks we hope to get packing and have another load of boxes transported to Dundee.

There are so many people to thank for their contributions of donations, time, money and love, it truly is a whole Community project including people from our Church but also people from our wider community coming together. “ We are blessed."

Sunday Club

,

The numbers are increasing, and leaders continue to prepare activities and workshops for the children when they leave the Sanctuary and go to the halls for religious activities after the Children’s address by the Minister.

The Leisure Group

The Group has proved exceptionally successful. The group meets every week and begins with a welcome song, a hymn and then a prayer. Each week there is either a speaker, a particular theme from those with various talents, musicians, singers, crafts etc. and there is lots of fun, fellowship, followed by refreshments. We have been blessed with people sharing their various talents both from the Church family and from other organised groups. Our Christmas outing this year wasa visit to a local business for a Christmas Panto and refreshments. A Burn’s lunch was arranged in January, where we received haggis, neeps and tatties, shortbread, dumpling, macaroon and tablet. We were entertained with a member of our congregation addressing the haggis and a piper playing several Scottish numbers on the bagpipes. We were able to enjoy another of Elizabeth’s poems/stories and the whole afternoon was enjoyed and appreciated by all. We have seen the numbers increase, especially with younger members of the community and congregation who have recently retired or are finding they have time on their hands to be able to join us on a Monday afternoon. This is a most joyous event for many who attend and a welcome outing for education and chat.

Local Charities

Susan Henderson, one of our Elders is a trustee with Hamilton District Foodbank and coordinates the donations that members bring to Church. Susan has been a volunteer with the Foodbank for many years.

Along with our regular donations, we asked for non-perishable foods for our Harvest Service, which was shared between the Hamilton Foodbank and the foodbank within Gilmour and Whitehill Church.

We had our Annual Christmas Toy Appeal. This is new toys which are generously donated by the congregation and given to the Hamilton Advertiser Toy Appeal and Hamilton Foodbank to distribute before Christmas.

Hamilton Churches Drop-in Centre: HCDIC

Matthew 25:35-36 (Good News Bible)

35:- ‘I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave mea drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes’,

36:- ‘naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me’.

The Hamilton Churches Drop-in Centre was established about 25 years ago, when several churches in the Hamilton area got together with the aim of helping the homeless. The idea was to provide a warm, safe, space where homeless people in the Hamilton area could come in, free of charge, for a heat, for a warm meal, for a wash or shower, and to be given clothes and shoes. Once a month a hairdresser comes in. Covid changed the situation slightly, when all local authorities were required to provide some sort of accommodation, so no-one was technically homeless. The Drop-in Centre continued to provide hot meals, but at that time, on a carry-out basis. There was no need to provide a warm space or showers. Now, the heated dining room is open again, and donated clothes and shoes are given out.

EE____ Blantyre Old Parish Church 2025 Page 5

HCDIC — Continued

It is open every day of the year, situated in Beckford Street in Hamilton, between the hours of 7pm and 8 pm. It is open to anyone who needs it. Everything is donated, by individuals, by congregations, and by some local shops. Two local supermarkets and two bakers are particularly generous.

The food is prepared by volunteers from the partner churches, which includes two teams of usually four people, from Blantyre Old, working on the second Sunday and third Monday of each month.

The users of the Drop-in Centre appreciate what they receive and know that people are giving up their time to help them. It is sometimes hard to see how people have fallen on hard times, yet it is also encouraging to know that we are helping even in a small way. A few users have recently been released from prison with almost no material help, and it is good to give these people a little help in getting their lives back on track. This is a practical Christian mission.

If you feel able to help in any way, either as a volunteer or as a donor, please contact Susan Henderson or Mary Gallacher.

Daffodil Tea

Blantyre Old also held a Daffodil Tea in aid of Marie Curie. This was well attended and supported by the Congregation, and several members of the Marie Curie organisation attended to give a presentation. A massive thank you to the bakers from the Congregation and community and the Tea Ladies for all their hard work to be able to make this happen. The Congregation are regular supporters of the Marie Curie events within the Community too, as one of our Church members is heavily involved with this charitable organisation and works tirelessly to support them. A massive thank you to Liz McHendry for all her hard work on the day and her continual support to the Charity.

Craft Group

The Craft Group is a small friendly group of 10 -12 who meet every Saturday from 10.00 am to 12 noon in the Session Room in the Church halls. We do a variety of crafts — knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, quilting, and card making. Anyone interested in joining us would be made welcome you do not need to be an expert — none of us are. Of course, we also enjoy a cuppa with goodies and a blether.

Pastoral Care

Blantyre Old Parish Church Pastoral Care Team have been and still are developing pastoral care with the grace of God and Prayer. The Prayer Ministry started on Sunday 23rd June 2024 and has continued through and included 2025.

We make time after our Church services on a Sunday and within our Prayer Space in the Church Hall on a Sunday and on a Wednesday during the ‘Warm Welcome’ for anyone who would like to be prayed with.

Pastoral Care (Continued)

The team make many pastoral telephone calls on a regular basis. They visit people in hospital, care homes, sheltered housing and people in their own homes who cannot manage to come to Church. They visit people who are going through difficult times. Rev. Jim Murphy does many telephone calls and visits and many revisits regularly. The team sends out cards on behalf of the Church family, these are sent to people who are ill, bereaved or needing a card of encouragement. Our Church did an Alpha Course from 02.09.25 — 18.11.25, within our Church halls. This took place on a Tuesday afternoon and catered for approximately 14-20 people, led by 5 leaders. On Saturday 22°4 November 2025 the group held a Holy Spirit Day in the G.L.O. Centre in Motherwell to complete the course. Many people expressed their enjoyment and felt blessed having taken part in the course. The Church thanks the leaders and the anonymous family for funding and leading such an event.

Parish and Community

School Chaplaincy: Rev. Jim Murphy regularly attends the local Primary school and youth groups throughout Blantyre. He has also attended groups within Asda Blantyre where various services, advice is offered to the public. Jim is forever visiting people in hospital and in their own homes.

Basis of Union

Talks and meetings are still ongoing regarding the Union of the 3 Blantyre Church of Scotland churches: Livingstone Memorial, St. Andrews and Blantyre Old. The basis of union will consist of 2 Churches remaining open in Blantyre with one of those being the Main Place of Worship on a Sunday morning, with the other staying open to offer Mission and the possibility of alternative worship/services. This has been a very trying time for all 3 congregations and our thoughts and prayers are with all concerned. Once the decision is made for Blantyre, the Presbytery Plan is for further inclusion of the congregation of Hamilton Hillbank Parish Church of Scotland which is the new church union of Gilmour and Whitehill Parish Church and Hillhouse Parish Church of Scotland. Talks will be ongoing in regard to the current and the latter, and we all look forward to a promising and easy transition.

HIGHLIGHTS of 2025

Most of what we did is highlighted in other parts of the report. Some other highlights:

The Memorial Garden on the Church grounds, that we talked about last year, is now in place. It is beautiful, open to anyone and was officially opened with a ‘touching’ Service by Rev. Jim Murphy and Rev. Les Brunger. Much appreciation is given to the members of the congregation who made up our ‘Garden Group’ for all their hard work and dedication. A massive thank you also to the members of Bonnie Blantyre for all their help and guidance.

In June 2025, Blantyre Old hosted the local primary school’s Leavers Service. This was conducted by the Rev. Jim Murphy, but the majority of the Service was enacted by the pupils themselves. It was a Wonderful and ‘touching’ Service, and the pupils were a credit to their teachers and their school. It was well attended by the whole school, the teachers and many parents, grandparents and siblings. We were blessed to be able to be part of it.

We hosted the Hamilton Bowling Club Caley Choir again in 2025 and as previously was a wonderful evening of entertainment and song.

The Sunday Club did their annual Nativity Play on the 15" ofDecember. A massive thank you to the Sunday Club leaders and all the children and adults who participated in such a funny and poignant performance. It makes us appreciate what the meaning of Christmas is all about. We look forward to next year!

As mentioned, we are very proud to partake in our Voluntary work, with the Hamilton Drop In Centre, the Warm Welcome, the Community Christmas Fayre, the regular Foodbank donations, the Hamilton Advertiser and wider Christmas Toy Appeals, our annual Harvest Appeal Service for the foodbank, our Malawi connection and supplies and with all other good work that the Church representatives and Congregation contribute too.

FUTURE PLANS

We are strengthening our faith by promoting the Sunday Club again and encouraging more Children back on a Sunday.

We aim to continue our multi-faceted worship and look ahead to how we can continue to support and encourage our local community and play our part in the life of the wider Church.

We have seen a massive increase in our Hall lets and through this we hope to encourage growth/attendance at our Services.

Our aim is to carry on the good work that we undertook in 2025 into the coming year and foreseeable future and support and nurture our community contributions.

We will continue to support the ‘Wee Free Library’ which has been erected outside our Church halls. It will continue to be maintained by the Community group responsible for its success but welcomed by our congregation and the local community.

In March 2026 we are again hosting the Hamilton Bowling Club Caley Choir’s annual concert. This is an evening of music and song and is well attended by the local community, the congregation and members of the choirs’ friends and families. The taking from this event helps finance the Choir’s continual success. This will be the 3" year in succession that we have been blessed to welcome them to our beautiful Sanctuary. This is something that is in our diary and something we look forward to hosting repeatedly if possible.

In December 2025 we welcomed the Rock Choir, who gave a presentation of their talents and their rendition of favourite Christmas songs. This was arranged by the Leisure Group and took place within the Sanctuary of the Church and open to the public. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. Tea/Coffee and ‘goodies’ were available afterwards. It is hoped that this could become an annual event and we look forward to further presentations this coming year.

Financial Review

This year, again due to the generosity of the congregation, we received £54,435 through givings and donations which includes tax recovered on Gift Aid of £8,253. Hall rental fell from £14,025 to £13,080, this due to fewer private parties, also down was fundraising at £3,357 compared with £6,554 the previous year. We transferred £15,688 from the Consolidated Fabric Fund, this is the rental income from the Manse and Bridal Salon, and we received £7,145 investment interest. Total income amounted to £93,935.

Expenditure for the year amounted to £90,182. Our Giving to Grow contribution at £33,844 is always our largest expense and a breakdown is shown below. Repairs and maintenance at £11,634 have increased on last year but £1,787 of this was the residual balance due on the cost of the new hall doors. Heat and light at £8,632 also shows an increase of £1,500. Cleaning, Grounds and Garden showa substantial increase at £17,220. This is due to the creation of our Community Garden — the resin cross, benches, planters - at £8,690 and work done to our boundary walls and entrance to car park which were in a dangerous condition costing £5,304. Locum costs were also down at £4,360 as we only paid the difference between the vacancy allowance and Jim’s salary. During the year we were able to meet all other outgoing costs and the accounts for the year show an excess of £3,753.

Both Complexions Beauty Salon and the Manse continue to meet their monthly rental commitments.

This year our Giving to Grow contribution will increase from £33,844 to £37,405 an increase of £3,561. Also, this year we are now responsible for Jim’s salary as there is no vacancy allowance set off against this. Edinburgh will continue to pay Jim’s and then invoice us quarterly for the full amount.

Reserves Policy

It is the Trustees’ policy to hold reserves of approximately six months’ normal expenditure. At the year end the Church held unrestricted cash funds of £78,540 with £297,986.56 at current market value invested through the Church of Scotland Offices, 121 George Street. There are restricted funds of £14,208 for use by named organisations. The Trustees are satisfied that, considering the amount which has been invested, sufficient reserves are available.
