Structure, Governance and Management
The charity is governed by a written constitution.
Membership is free and open to all people who wish to help the league. The affairs of the league will be managed by a committee of up to twelve members who shall be elected at a public meeting and shall hold office for one year. The members of the committee, at the first meeting following the Annual General Meeting, will appoint a Chairman, a Vice-Chairman, a Secretary and a Treasurer. The Chairman will have a deliberative as well as a casting vote. The committee will meet at least four times a year and more often as circumstances demand.
Objectives and Activities
The objects of the charity are to provide comfort and help for the patients and staff of the Arran War Memorial Hospital, Lamlash, Isle of Arran and for the community.

Achievements and Performance
With Covid now in the past and with some staffing changes at the Hospital, the League is in a better position to support War Memorial Hospital care. Our outstanding spending this year was for two Rising/Reclining chairs for the ARCAS unit, or side ward. The conversion was mainly funded by ARCAS and we were glad to be invited to supply the chairs, one for the patient and one for a family member, friend or neighbour. Some cancer patients have their treatment determined on the mainiand and then it can be delivered here on the Island, saving ferry journeys.
We were also, under our constitution, able to continue support for the Arran Medical Practice. The same doctors staff the Hospital as run the medical centres and we take the view that anything that may help their work is good for people living on Arran, or takes pressure off the Hospital. We also have an arrangement with the Arran Medical Practice that the Practice pays the VAT and we cover the agreed invoice, less VAT
Income continues to come via general donations in collecting cans in shops and businesses, Alison Bilsland's "hire" of wheel chairs and walking aids and funeral collections, which are a frequent thanks for end-of-life nursing care.
Future Plans contemplate continued contact with present Hospital staff for wish lists and making sure that the annual accounts are always inspected and approved by selected, annually varied, members of the community who are not on the committee.
Future Plans
The League continues to support the Arran Medical Group where it can. It continues with plans to support Taichi classes just as soon as these can resume, paying for the hire of the Brodick Pavilion. The League has agreed to finance maternity training when it is able to restart. The secretary will continue to seek wish-lists from the nursing and doctors at the Hospital.
Financial Review
During the year the charity received £6,014 (2024: £5,448) from its core charitable activities and £844 of interest (2024: £757). Expenditure amounted to £11,199 (2024: £3,665) resulting in a deficit of £4,641 (2024: £1,940 surplus).
Reserves
As of 30 April 2025, the free reserves of the charity were £53,800 (2024: £58,441). It is the management committee’s policy to maintain sufficient free reserves to allow the charity to meet its liabilities as they fall due.
