The TrLisI carries comprehensive insurance for tlie contents of the Aisle and public lidbility. Hisioric Scotland has undertaken responsibility for the maintenance of tlie fabric of the Aisle and may in future be able to provide a grant for lialf tlie cost of electricity used in tlie Aisle. Objects: To proinote the availabi l ily of tlie Lauderdale Aisle and Three Kings Chapel for ecumenical use in coi)tiiiuing peace ai)d harmony by members of Trinilarian churclies, to make provision for reception of pilgriinages thereto. and to provide for and proTnote tlie ecclesiastical service of the Three Kings Chapel. Background The Minister of Public Buildings Works determined in 1964 that the Aisle wilh its outstanding 17 century alabaster moiiument, one of the fiiiest of its period in Scotlaiid and Ilie United Kingdom: sliould be classified as an ancient monument, and tliat the Minister was of the opinion that the preservation of ihe iiionument was a matter of public inleresi by reason of the historical, traditioiial and arcliaeological interest atlachiiig tlier¢to. Tlie Miiiislei. uiidertook tlie maintenance of Ihe fabric of the Ai51e, wliilst the Earl of L8uderdale undertook day to day operalion of tlie aisle and to provide free access. Historic Scotlaiid has taken over tlie responsibililies of the Minister of Public Buildings and Works. The Lauderdale Aisle on the north side of the churcli of St Mary's, Haddinglon is a burial aisle wliich incorporates a memorial dedicated to Sir John Maitland, I. Baron Maitland, Chancellor of Scotland, who died in 1595 and to liis son. John Maitlaiid. I. E2rl of Lauderdale, who died in 1645 and their wives. The entrance to the aisle is througli 2 13, century Romanesque doorway, but the present structure seems to date from the 16 century. It is not clear what structure lay beyond tlie doorway, though it is thought that it was the foriner vestry. Before tlie Refonnation, Maiilands were interred in the floor of the church. Following the Siege of Haddington (1548-1550) whicli left the choir and transepts derelict, Sir John Maitland began to restore tlie Aisle, and around tliis time a fatnily crypt on the west side of the Aisle was built lo accommodate burials, because the Kirk began to discour2ge inlerinenls in the church. Tlie Inemorial may have been plaiiiied by the 1° Earl, who died in 1645. bul it was probably erected by the 2" Earl, and only Duke of Lauderdale, after the Restoration. Its design is atlribuled to Nicholas Stone (died 1647), and is similar to the memorials to the first Earl of Dunbar at Dunbar. and lo Viscount Stormoiil at Scone Palace. These memorials were made in London by Italian craftsmen but erected by local labour. Close to the Aisle was the 'Altarage of the Blessed Virgin aiid the Three Kings" which was derelict after the siege of Haddington, and had disappeared by 1590. On May 6 1978 the ancient Altarage was restored in the private chapel by the XVII Earl of Lauderdale witli the intention chat the chapel should be used for ecumenical worship and use by Cliristians of all Trinilarian traditions. Representatives of the Cliurch of Scotland, Ihe Episcopal Church of Scotland, the Catholic Church and tiie Orthodox Church participated in the hallowing of the chapel. Seivices are conducted under the rites of all these churches, with the formal approval of their respective hierarchies. Historic Scotland By a Deed of Guardianship dated 18, March 1964 bctween Alfred, Ilie XVI Eai'l of Lauderdale and the Minisier of Public Buildings and Works, Ilie Minister was appointed guardian of the Aisle under the term5 of tlie Ancieiit Monuments Acts. Historic Scotland has taken on the Minister's duties, aiid is responsible for maintenance of the Aisle. Under the terins of the Deed the Minister can regulate access to the Aisle and to inake 2dmissioii charge5, Subject to the right of the Earl of Laudei'dale aiid Such persons as are aiithorised by him to hold religious services in the Aisle. The Trusl is responsible lor maintenance of the crypt, provision for public access and the day to day ruiining costs of ihe Aisle, willi grant assistance from 14istoric Scotland. Basis of independent My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the 2006 Accounts examiner's statement Regulations An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.
