St Colvmba's Free Church of Scotland is a city-centre church in EdinbuTgh committed to the gospel

North America. Datin8 from 1843, but with iLs roots in the Scottish Reforniation, it owes its
distinctive title to its historical struggle to remain 'free' from state interference in its internal affairs.
It has close and active relattons with many other Refollned churches of Jesus Christ throughout the
world. St Columba's was first opened &$ "Free St Johns" in April of 1845 Ullder the ministy of

On October 1. 2024, Esk Valley Church became a stand-alone con￿gatiOn of the Free Church of
Scotlan¢ and it was registered as a charity with OSCR on 17 December 2024.
Over the course of the year there were RO baptisms, including 7 tnfantsltoddlers. We welcomed 34
people into membeTship at St Columba's.
We are grateful to God for the leadership team at St Columba's (elders, dea¢ons. and Womett's
Pastoral Team) and tbe supporting staff, members and adherents the eongregation who all mkkc
up th¢ ¢hurch fatnily that seeks to serve and glorlfy God in all that it does- living Out attd sharing the
Gospel of God's grace in Community together and in the city where we live.
Although CoTnerstone is now a Free Church congregalion in its right, and a separate registered
charity, the legal transfer of ownership of the Cornerstone Manse and Church building had not b¢e
completed by 31 December 2024. As a result, these assets are retained on the St Columba's balance
sheet until the legal transfer of ownership takes place.
In RelAtlon to Congregational Fulldlng
Income to the General Fund of St Columba's increased by I l % when compared with the previous
year mainly due to an increase in giving by the congregatioJL
Through the continued donations of the congregation and those connected to it:
Our overall financial contiibution to central denomination funds from General Funds
decreased by 38 /.
Locally we supported Eldff Memorial free Church, Free church Youth Camps and 20
Schemes.

Congregational investm¢nt fimds together with those of th¢ central d¢nomination and other
Congregations are held as shared pool units, managed by the central denomination's investment
managers.
From Acts of the Free Church General Assembly. Act 2, 1979, governs the investment policy of the
Central denomination's investments. The investments are managed on a discretionary basi5 by
professional managers. The main objective of the portfolio is lo provide income for the Church

without risking longer terni retUttL A number of ethical restrictions are pla¢¢ on the invcslment
managers in the choice of investments. The managers report regularly and normally tneet at leasi
twice a year with the Central Church's Investment Committee.
The rnaiket value of the congregation's investment portfolio at 31 December 2024 was £24.273 (2023
£21,387). The general fund investments g¢nerdt¢d an income of £590 (2023: £548) during the year.
Th¢ Trust¢es are satisfied that the portfolio has been managed in accordance with the obje¢tiveq set.
Rlsk ma￿￿ement
The TTusiees are responsible for asse&sing the risks to which the congregation is exposed on an
ongoing basis and for periodically updating and reviewing it. The Tn￿te¢S assess the risk in relation
to health and saf¢ty in line with th¢ requirements of the Free Church of Scotland central church. The
Tn￿te¢S seek io identify and address the material risks facÉng the congregation and agree measures
aimed at mitigating these risks. To this enl during the reporting year an extensive, commerciatly
available risk ￿eSsMent toolkit designed for churdles was used.
Reserves Policy
li is the policy of tbe church to maintain unrestricted fimds excluding fixed assets and investments
totslling the equivalent of I month of its expendituTr. Such UDrestricted funds at the balance sheet
dat¢ w¢rc £183,807 (2023: £175,712). The total expenditu￿ forthc ¢hurth in the year to 31 Dec¢mber
2024 was £501,550 (2023.. £973.840). The Trustees are pleased that the reserves policy is being met
and that th¢ unrestTiCted fijnds are equivalent to approximat¢ly 5 months, usual charÈtable
expenditure, moT¢ than ad¢quately covering the required l Jnonth's ¢xpcndilure. There is no current
requirement to incro%e the reserves as a result.
The Tn￿teeS also take into account that some aspects of the church's activities a￿ funded out of
restricted funds which have a]ready been ieceived. Restricted funds total £787,662 (2023: £812211).
Plans for the Future
We continue to look for opportunities to plant morc churches in th¢ Edinburgh arca, using the
experience tbat we have gaincd ov¢T T¢G¢￿t years.
We hope to continue to co-operate with Edinburgh Theological Seminary in the sharing of our
building and continue to involve stydents at the Seminary in our Ministy Apprentice programme.
This scheme enables St Columba's and the Church Plants to continue developin8. training and
discipling future church leaders.
