The trustees present their annual report and financial statements of the charty for the year ended 31 December
2024. The financial Statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note I
to the financial statements and compfy with the General Assembly Regulations for Congregational Finance, the
Charities and Trustee Investment Iscotlandl Act 2005, the Charitie5 Accounts (Scotlandl Regulations 2006 las
amended) and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities- Statement of Recommended Prartice applicable to
charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and
Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021 leffective l January 20191"
Objectives and Activities
The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in doctrine, Reformed Fn tradition and Presbytertan in polity. It exists to
glorify God and to work for the advancement of Chrisfs Kingdom throughout the world. As a national Church, it
acknowledges a distinrtNe call and duty to bring the ordknances of rel￿10n to the people in every partsh of
Scotland through a territorial ministry. tt co-operates with other Churches various ecumenital bodies in
Scotland and beyond.
Introdurtion
During this financial year. Devana Parish Church entered into a union with St John's Church for Deaf People. Prior
to the creation of Devana, St John's had been independently based in St Mark'5 Church and had then held
fortnightly servbces in Devana Holburn Street.
On 30" June 2024, the congregations of Devana Parish Church and St John's Church for Deaf People voted in
favouf of the basis of union. The union look effect from 1st September 2024 and was formalised with a
Presbytery Service on 10 September 2024. The united charge continues to operate in two buildings, Holburn
Street and Fonthill Road. It 15 a COng￿88tIon of the Presbytery of the North Eèst and the Northern Isle5.
Actlvities, Arhlevements and Perfoimance
Devana Parish Church has adopted a Mission Statement.'_ By Faith, in Hope, with Love.
Worship is central to the Mission of Devana Parish Church. It follows an annually agreed pattern, taking place
equally in both sanctuaries, Holburn Street and Fonthill Road, led by the Ministry Team with regular involvement
by members of the congregation. The average number attending thi5 year 15 recorded as 120, with six at the
services held by St John'5. Online worship is streamed weekly from both churches. The Sacrament of Holy
Communion is celebrated each month and twice during Holy Week, with the offer of home communion for
individuals. Twenty-four funerals were conducted by the Ministers, some in the ¢hur¢hes and others elsewhere.
Monthly services of worship take place in the Cowdray Club and RFverside Care Homes close to the Churches.
Mlssion and Outrea¢h includes congregational involvemellt in the work of Christièn Aid, Instant Neighbour
Trust, with support locally for the overseas student population through Friends International, and weekly Coffee
Shops pr>marily serving the local community and regular special offerings made for local and overseas charities.
Our concerns for more isolated members of the congregation are addresse(I by regularty delivering greeting
cards, phone contact and personal visits as appropriate. The website is an important means of communication,
along with the weekly online newsletter. A new magaiine, to be given to all households ts currently under
preparation.

Chlldren and Young People are regularty in our two church buildlngs, with Sunday aub, Holiday Clubs and a
Youth Club, for which we currently have a .5 FTE Mission Development Worker in the Ministry Team. We have
also begun a monthly series of Famity Church on a Sunday afternoon, to include actlvTties and a meal and short
worship to be shared as a family. Both ministers are involved in school chaplaincies in the Parish. Church
premises are use(1 by GirlgLsidin& Mother and Toddler GroL5PS. Phoenix Youth Theatre and a Dance School.
Congregatlmal Groups and Ucensed fvemises usevs include a ran8e of frtness. wellbeing and dance classes,
Phoenix Adult Theatre, the Church of Scotland Guild and the LÈvtng Well Café for dementia sufferers and their
carers. Premises are also regularly used for performances. training courses and one-off occasions.
Property matters are managed by a team which cares for two operating church building5, ttyo manses and the
currently vacant St Mark's Church building and the vacated manse at Polmuir Road.
Employees of the congregation are an Administrator, Treasurer and an 0rganist1Di￿ct0r of Music.
The Mlnlsters are actfvely involved In the work of the Church of Scotland localty and nationalty, both convening
Committees of Presbytery, and one being the Presbytery ￿Presentative on the national Church Faith Action
Programme Leadership Team.
Plan5 for the future
Devana-Fountainh311 P3ri5h Grouping is in the process of being established, with a formal Basis of Union to be
agreed between the two adjoining parishes. to enable partnership mission and outreach and mutual support.
Joint activities such as the City Centre Supper aub are already taking place, and the joint Kirk Sessions are
considering a plan to develop a Mintstrylmission to Aberdeen's Cultural and Arts Community as per the
Presbytery Mission Plan.
Flnanclal Re¥lew
The principal source of income at Devana Parish Church remains our Free Will Offerings and Standing Orders
from members. Healthy investment Income from COSIT investments will also contribute greatty, as will income
from hall lets at both buildings.
Total funds at 31 December 2024 were £2,433,077, an increase of £110.783 during the year. Free Will Offerings
and Standing Order5 from members Sho￿ an increase of 53% from the prevÈous year which can be attributed to
thi5 being the first full year of the union of the three congregattons which occurred in 2023. Income from
investments has increased to £99,02112023 - £54,2561 and there was an unrealised gain on the market value of
investments of £38.149 compared to f52.617 in 2023. Generous legacy income of £41,13512023 - £42,917) was
received.
Unrestricted funds, including designated frjnds. were £1.440,452, an increase of £82,479. The main movement
relates to the income received from the Church of Scotland Consoltdated Fabric Fund which is it7cluded in
income from charitable activittes and was used to fund fabrÉc ￿pair works and capital expenditure on an AV
system.
Restrirted funds have Increased by £24,776 to £952,294.

Investment Policy and Perforniance
Devana holds investments, at C05t, of £1,488,730 with a 2024 Market Valve of £1,810,22612023 - £1,348,134).
These figures are an amalgamation of the investments previously held by the three separate charges.
Risk Management
The principal risks facing the charity are in relation to lil the potential liabilities associated wtth the buildings, Iiil
the potential of running a financial deficit, liiil the inevitable changes in attendance and financial contributions
resutting from the continuing impact of the Covid pandemic and external influences of CLtrrent social change.
Kirk Se55ion considers these matters on an ongoing basis with the following strategies to address them.
lil The Kirk Session uses the ￿rviceS of a Caretaker to assist with the regular inspection of bulldings to address
defects, deal with potential deterioration at an early stage, and ensure that health and safety standards are met.
Property Funds are invested with the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland to address major works when
required.
lill The KSrk Session employs a Treasurer who leads the Finance Team in considering matters of cashflow,
budgeting and the cycle of stewardship advised by the Church of Scotland focusing on time. talents and financial
giving. Ongoing efforts are rn3de to maximise income from hall use by outside organisation5.
liiil In response to financial circumstances, the Kirk Session encourages commitment to the congregation
through Profession of faith, encouragement to regular financi31 giving and commitment to the mission of Devana
ParFsh Church. It atso endeavour5 to provide support to the congregation and community through fellowship
and ministry to address social challenges.
Reserves Politv
The financial statements show. as at 31 December 2024 a Capital Reserve of £751,69012023 - £700,493). Thi5
has increased during the year mainly as a ￿st11t of the increase in value of the investments held in this fund. It is
noted, later in the financial statements, that Devana Parish Church doe5 not usually capitalise expenditure of a
capttal nature, fvrthermore in the absence of adequate ￿nd raising and a reluctance to borrow monies, the
Capital Reserve will be called upon as necessary for fabric costs identrfied. Note 10 to the financial statements
shows capitsl expend5ture durin8 the year ended 31 December 2024 which represents the purchase of a new AV
system.

Accountin8 Pollcies
The principal accounting policies, which have been applied con5É5te¥rtly in the current and preceding year in
dealing with item5 which are considered materral to the financial statements, are set out below.
Basls of preparatlon
The financial statements have been prepared in acwrdance with the charÈty'S constitution. the Charities and
Trustee Investment (Scotlandl Act 2tXJ5. the Charities Accounts (Scotlandl Regulations 2￿6 las amended) and
"Accounting and Reporting by Charities= Statement of Recommended Prartice applicable to charities prèparing
their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the VK and Republic o* Ireland
IFRS 1021 leffeLtive l January 20191". The ch8rity is a Public Benefit Entity a5 defined by FRS 102.
The financial statements are p￿pared sterSin& whKh is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary
mounts in these financial ststements are rounded to the nearest £.
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost converfion. The principal accounting
policie5 adopted are set out below.
Unlon of congfe8atlons
On I September 2024 Devana enterered into a Union with St John's Church for Deaf People which operates as a
local Mission Church within Devana. The introduction of fvnds from 5t John'5 Church for Deaf People on the
date of union are shown under other income on the statement of financial activities and detailed in note 6. The
comparative figures have not been restated.
Golng concern
At the time of approving the financial statements, the Trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity
has adequate resour￿$ to ¢ontlnue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the Trustees
continue to adopt the going concern basis of account4ng in preparing the financial statements.
Income
Income from donations is recogntsed when there is evidence of entitlement to the gfft, receipt is probable and
its amount can be measured reliably- Entitlement usually arises immediately on its receipt unless there are
terms or conditions wh¥ch must be met before the charity is entttled to the resources.
Receipt of a legacy is re¢ognised when it is probable that it wtll be received. Receipt Is normalty probable when
there has been grant of confirmation, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in the
estate, after settling any liabilities, to pay the legacy and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within
the control of the charity or have been met.
Donated professional service5 and donated fa¢ilities are recognised as bncome when the ¢hèrtty has control
oveT the item. any conditions associated with the donated rtem have been met, the receipt of economic benefit
*rom the use by the charity of the item 15 probable and that economic benefrt Can be measured reliably. In
accordance with the Charitie5 SORP IFRS102I the general volunteer time of congregation members is not
recognised. On receip¢ donated professional services and donated faciltties are reco8ni5Èd on the basis of the
value of the gift to the charity which is the amount the charity would have been willing to pay to obtain services
or facilities of equivalent economi¢ benefst on the open market- a cor￿SpOndIng amount ts then recognised as
experhditure in the period of receipt.

Interest on funtls held on dep05tt is inclLtded when receivable and the amount can be measured reliably by the
charity.. this is normally upon notrfication of the interest paid or payable by the Bank. Investment income Is
stated when received.
Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to make a payrnent to a third pèrty, it
is probable that settlement will required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.
Expenditure can be tlasstfied under the following activity headin8S-
Costs of ratsin8 fvnds comprise the direct costs associated with fundraising.
Expenditure on charTtable actwities includes all other costs associated with the running of the charéty to
further its purposes and associated 5UPPOrt Costs.
Expendtture includes VAT which ¢artnot be recovered and is recorded a5 Part of the expenditure to which it
relates.

Funds are classrfted a5 either endowment funds, restritted funds Of unrestricted funds, defined as follows=
Endowment funds are funds which have been given on the condition that the original capital sum is not
reduced, but the income therefrom is LEsed for the purpose defiE￿I in accordance with the objects of the
charity.
Restricted funds are fvnds subjert to specffic reqU1￿ments as to their use which may be declared by the flonor
or with their a￿hOrity or created through le831 proce55es, but stlll within the wider objects of the ch8rity.
Unrestricted funds are expendable at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the objects of the charity.
If parts of the unrestricted funds are earmarked at the discretion of the trustees for a particular purpose, they
are designated as a separate fund. This designation has an administrative purpose only and does not legally
restrict the trustees. discretion to apply the fund.
Fixed assets
The Church has the right to occupy and use for its charitable objects certain tangible T￿e￿ a55et5, including the
Churches and halls of the former St Mark's, Ferryhill and Holburn Churthes vested in the Church of Scotland
General Trustees and the manses of the former Ferryhill and South Holburn Churches vested in local Trustees.
No consideration is payable for the use of these assets. Expenditure incurred on the repairand maintenance of
these assets is ch3rged as an expense In the statement of financial activities in the period in which the liability
arises.
All tsngible fixed assets costing in excess of £1,￿0 having a value to the Church greater than one year, other
than those acquired for specrfic purposes, are capttalised. Depreciation is provided to write off the cost or
initial value, less residual value, of tangible fixed assets over their estimated useful lives as foltows=

Cash and cash equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash Trn hand, deposits held at call with ban￿. other short-term liquid
investments with original maturities of three rnonths or less. and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown
within borrowings in current liabilities.
Financlal Instruments
The chartty has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 'Basic Financial Instruments, and Section 12 '0ther
Financial Instruments Issues, of FRS 102 to all of its fiftancial instruments.
Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charFty becomes party to the
contractual provisions of the instrument.
Financial assets and liabilr(ies are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when
there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an Trntention to Settle on a Tret
basis orto realise the asset and settle the liability simuitaneou5ty.

In common wth all congregations of the Church of Scottand the congregation benefits from the contribution made by
volunteers who gi¥e their time and tslents willingty tor the beneft of the Church. The areas of congregational life which
fely on the contributton of ¥olunteers are many and varied and much of the attivity would be vnable to continue were it
not forthe commitment shown.
