Report of the Independent Examiners to the Trustees of Edinburgh People’s Theatre Charity ref SC 014988
We report on the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30[th] June 2025 which are set out on pages 6-8.
The Trustees of the charity are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended).
The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (d) of the 2006 Regulations does not apply. It is our responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1)(c) of the 2005 Act and to state whether particular matters have come to our attention.
Our examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently we do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
In the course of our examination, no matter has come to our attention:
-
1) which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements:
-
a) to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Regulations ,and
-
b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 9 of the 2006 Regulations have not been met, or
-
2) to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

– EPT AGM SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21[st] 2025
Secretary’s Report 2024 /25
It’s been a pleasure to spend another year with Edinburgh People’s Theatre and I’ve enjoyed putting together this report celebrating the club’s achievements. Following last year’s EGM, we had a number of people step into the breach and join the committee so we’ve had a great, stable year with a committee at full strength. That means we’ve been able to tackle a number of jobs that were overdue like writing policies and guidelines alongside looking at premises improvement especially in the wardrobe area. However the main drive is always ensuring the best possible productions are put on stage and this year has been full of 4 star ones.
The 2024 Fringe Show deftly directed by Anne Mackenzie was a 4 star success. A revival of Alan Cochrane’s play Ne’er the Twain. It had a great review from All Edinburgh Theatre saying, ’ both play and company come over as commendably fresh and very funny. ’ The set was commended and well designed and dressed for that era. All the audience left with positive comments. The cast worked so well together over the long run and the legions of help from everyone on costume, back stage, lights, sound and all the front of house volunteers really created a sense of community. The Fringe run made a profit of over £6 thousand although this was less than the year before.
The Panto, Sleeping Beauty directed by Mandy Black was a big hit making over £12 thousand profit. Playing to packed houses, it flew through every scene. With some very clever changes of era and dream sequences choreographed with such skill by Mandy. Despite one of the key cast falling very ill suddenly the show went on and one of our youngest cast members, Jess stepped up and took on the cat role with confidence and skill. It received 4 stars and the reviews said: …’everything you could want from a traditional pantomime.’ Which is just what you want to hear.
The SCDA entry in February this year was ‘ The Holiday ’ directed by Kevin Edie. Although it didn’t make it into the next round the acting was praised and the comedy moments well presented. Congratulations to all involved for a very funny show.
Our March production at the Church Hill Theatre was Quartermaine’s Terms directed by Andy Moseley. A skilled cast expertly conveyed the different characters and every actor delivered a great performance under detailed direction. ‘ Andy Moseley’s direction is
particularly good at showing the various characters’ inner lives and relationships’ said All

Edinburgh Theatre giving it four stars: The set designed by Richard Spiers really made you feel like you were inside the school. Special mention to the ‘clock’ work from the back stage crew. Although the production made a loss, costs were high and it was very well received by the audiences watching.
for
In May The Watsons hit the stage with aplomb. EPT invited a guest director this production and were rewarded with a phenomenal show. with a twist. The large cast filled the stage with energy and it was great to see so many new, younger members join us. A special call out to and the costume team for creating so many gorgeous Regency costumes especially that beautiful ‘ball’ dress. The Watsons made a small profit and received four stars from North West End and All Edinburgh Theatre who wrote: …’ the play is consistently good fun as well as thought-provoking, and director Hilary ‘ Spiers has fashioned a production that has pace and energy .
Sadly one of our biggest contributors towards panto success and many other shows, our MD for many years died this year. He was a truly lovely person, loved by everyone who worked with him. He leaves a big hole in EPTs heart and we will miss him and his cheery smile.
We’ve had some great social events this year thanks to for working so hard organising events. A group had a spooky City of the Dead evening tour around Edinburgh in January led by an ex EPT member. There was a fantastic quiz night in March set up by Joan who even co-opted her family to help. The quiz master was brilliant and there were loads of nibbles and prizes. We were all challenged by the different rounds and it was so well organised. The less said about the July Karaoke night the better! A great time was had by all, allegedly!
organised a brilliant series of Act Too workshops. After requests from members we trialled evening and afternoon workshops on different days instead of only Saturday mornings. Each workshop leader was excellent and those attending learnt lots. The attendance levels varied and we’d welcome future suggestions for workshops that people would be interested in.
Sat Jan 11th 10am – 12 noon. “De -mystifying the roles of Production Manager and Box Office Manager”.
– Sat Feb 1st 2pm 4pm. “Finding your Character’s Accent
– Sat 8th Marc10am to 1pm: Chorus and Ensemble Work Regency Style Led by (SCDA advisor)
– Wed 30th Apr 7.30pm-10pm Text Work Dig Deep!” led by

Wed June 4th at 7:30pm Keep Your Hair On” led by
The committee has been busy putting together polices and updating some of the information on roles and all that is involved in putting on a production. This should help clarify procedures. Alongside the more mundane matters such as the wasp invasion, w e’ve also discussed the future of EPT going forwards. We’ve been investigating the possibility of using a cheaper venue for some smaller productions as the cost of the Church Hill Theatre and its sheer size doesn’t always suit more intimate plays. We’ve also worked hard to get ahead of the schedule so that future productions can be announced earlier allowing more time to prepare and cast. If you’d be keen to help in this process we’ll be looking for people willing to volunteer for rol es to keep EPT working. Some of these don’t necessarily mean being on the committee and attending every meeting but might just be helping with a social event or key area.
Our long term treasurer (nick named ‘The gopher ’ – because he literally goes anywhere and does anything asked of him) retired from the role. He very kindly stayed on helping our new treasurer for the first 4 months Thank goodness he approved the accounts this year. He is still a point of help for anyone who needs it and he’s st ill busy in the archive and doing lots of other jobs. Recently spending time putting together a collection of photos, play bills and cuttings for the sister of a member who acted with us in the 50s, who was extremely grateful and thrilled to receive this treasure trove from so long ago.
A big shout out to all the members who’ve turned up to script reads, been front of house, attended a production, shared an EPT event on social media, helped with props, costume, painting sets or simply lugged a set into the van and out again. We really couldn’t do it without you. If you know anyone who’d like to be part of this great team especially back stage or with any set building skills or just willing and keen then drag them along so they can also find out how great EPT is.
