Objectives and activities

Charitable purposes

The furtherance of Christianity, by word and deed, based on the principles revealed in the Bible in general, and the teaching and example of Jesus Christ in particular.

Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects

  1. We have continued our normal services on Sundays. 2. Because of the geographical spread of our members, and as a way of reducing our carbon footprint, hybrid services are held on the first Sunday in the month, with the other Sundays being online only.

  2. On Wednesday evenings our programme dealing with Biblical and ethical topics, promoting better knowledge and understanding of our guiding principles, Biblical teaching and moral responsibilities, was held using Zoom. Thus there was increasing participation from other parts of Great Britain and occasionally from abroad. 4. Financial assistance was given to others who are working to further our Christian beliefs. 5. We supported charitable activities organised by the Christadelphian community at large, including the Meal a Day Fund (various projects).

  3. Our regular collections (each for one calendar month) were taken online, forwarded to various charities and good causes, for example the Disaster Emergency Committee and Christian Aid. Full details are in our accounts.

  4. Although not involved in their organising and running, our church hosts Alcoholics Anonymous groups who use the church accommodation ten times a week throughout the year with no breaks. No charge is made for the use of our accommodation, but donations are received.

  5. The AA group for Polish speakers continued, as did an Al-Anon group (also for Polish speakers), on the same basis as the existing AA meetings. 9. Aid and Abet, who work with ex-prisoners, used our premises for training volunteers. 10. Edinburgh Direct Aid held its AGM in our main room, free of charge.

  6. The Christine Witcutt Memorial Fund held its AGM in our main room, also free of charge.

2

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period

We prepared, published and followed programmes of meetings and activities for operation throughout the year as detailed above.

All the meetings (virtual and physical) are open to the public (except the two business meetings). We encouraged Christian growth within the membership: to be a witness to others of our beliefs and faith, along with the practical application of the Christian commandment to love God and to love our neighbours.

We met online on Wednesday evenings with a programme of Bible-related topics. These sessions promoted knowledge and understanding of our guiding principles and doctrines, and moral responsibilities. We explored and discussed a wide variety of topics and challenges relevant to our faith. These meetings were attended by both members and non-members.

We call our internal fundraising the “Micah Project” after the Old Testament prophet who stressed the importance of social justice. Financial support was given to Meal a Day for its work in Africa. During the year we continued to raise money for the Crown City School in Chwele, Kenya; this was followed by support for a feeding programme for children in Kenya and Sierra Leone. The last project, to be continued into the next reporting period, is to fund the costs of specialist beds for St. Columba’s Hospice, Edinburgh.

Members were individually active in Edinburgh Direct Aid and other charities.

3

Financial review

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

Details of any deficit

At the end of the financial year, the charity had reserves of £49,336. The Trustees consider this amount to be appropriate to cover the running costs and any unforeseen eventualities such as maintenance and repair of the premises, which form part of a listed Georgian tenement. It also allows us to respond when necessary to any unanticipated social need.

--------------- Donated facilities and services (if any)

Other optional information

Some of the money raised by our members goes through our books, but is sent to the charity for which it has been collected, with the addition of the calculated appropriate amount of Gift Aid, to be reclaimed later from HMRC.

The work of the charity is carried out entirely on a voluntary basis. No member of the charity is paid for being part of the charity and that includes all the trustees. Reimbursements of any expenses incurred strictly on behalf of the charity can be claimed by the members of the charity including the trustees

Declaration

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.

Signed on behalf of the charity’s trustees

Nature and purpose of funds

The charity donations are received from members and then paid to the outside charities. When the payment is made, the tax on any gift aid donations is added and this tax is covered by the general fund until the tax refund is received after the end of the tax year from HMRC. | The Local Welfare fund was set up during the 2023-24 as is to be used to provide financial support for members and individuals connected with the church and/or its members where | required. | | | |
