Achievements and performance
Summary of the Dear YMCA family: children, youth, members, families, friends, donors, supporters, staff and trustees,
main Welcome to our 167th Annual Report! In 2025, YMCA Aberdeen has continued its enduring commitment to
achievements of empower young people and invest in lives across our city. For 167 years, we have remained steadfast to our Christian
the . . mission, supporting individuals in their journey of personal growth in body, mind and spirit. Across the year, our
charity during youth work has provided safe spaces, trusted relationships, and practical support, helping children and young people
the financial develop confidence, resilience and skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our work remains rooted in the four
. pillars of the YMCA’s #Vision2030: Community Wellbeing, Meaningful Work, Sustainable Planet and Just World.
period Amongst many of our charitable achievements in 2025 include:
1. COMMUNITY WELLBEING
----- End of picture text -----
-
e _Y-Kids Club: Y-Kids continued as a busy, nurturing club running daily for primary-aged children. Our attendees reflect a variety of countries and cultures, and we work hard to ensure an inclusive environment where every child is welcomed, respected and supported. Children participated in a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, music, sports, games, short talks and football. Being part of the worldwide YMCA family matters deeply to our children, and the consistent nurture they receive in Aberdeen YMCA fosters a strong sense of belonging. We remain grateful to our donors who enable us to reuse school uniforms, clothing and toys. Throughout the year we worked in partnership with Instant Neighbour and King’s Community Church to provide additional support for children and families, including seasonal gifts and treats.
-
e Holiday Clubs for Children: During school holiday periods in 2025, we provided holiday clubs where children could have fun, learn together and enjoy quality time with friends and staff, while continuing to be supported in a safe and positive environment. We also hosted the Inter-Church Holiday Club at YMCA in partnership with four local city-centre churches. Over 80 children daily engaged in games, drama, music, snacks, crafts and Bible discussions supported by staff and volunteers, including involvement from our own young volunteers. Additional holiday activities through the year included learning about the Easter story, egg painting and rolling, planting and harvesting vegetables, litter picks, and making full use of our YMCA facilities.
-
e Youth Club: Our Youth Club continued to meet each Thursday, bringing young people together to socialise with peers and take part in activities including sports, games, computing, talks and pool. As young people transition into further study, our youth work remains responsive to the needs of those currently attending, including supporting a younger group of teenagers and encouraging progression into volunteering and leadership. This club provides a safe space for young people to develop through adolescence and be supported into young adulthood. Talks and discussion-based activities aim to strengthen mental wellbeing and empower young people to make positive choices for their future. We are grateful for National Lottery funding which has supported this work.
-
MEANINGFUL WORK e = Y-Training for Employment: In 2025, our youth worker continued to run monthly employability sessions through our Employability Course. Sessions supported young people to practise interview skills, identify personal strengths, develop CVs, build teamwork and take part in mock interviews. Young people benefited from 1:1 support throughout and could return to revisit topics where further help was needed. Donald Russell Scottish Butcher & Fine Foods continued to support this work, with senior staff offering workplace-relevant talks. Their support also helped strengthen our wider community work, including practical help for families during the Christmas period. We look forward to continuing this partnership into 2026.
e Y-Volunteering: We were privileged in 2025 to have a strong group of young volunteers dedicating time and skills across our programmes. Volunteering continued to support young people to gain experience, build confidence, and work towards achievement awards including Saltire Awards and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh. Many of our volunteers first came to YMCA through Y-Kids and understand the standards and values that guide our work. Volunteers received ongoing training, including child protection and supporting younger children. Our young volunteers remain a vital part of our YMCA family and contribute significantly to the quality and consistency of our provision.
-
SUSTAINABLE PLANET
-
e Y-Green Fingers: Our eco-focused work continued in 2025, helping children and young people care for the world around them and respond positively to the climate concerns many of them hold. Activities included litter picks, planting pollinator flowers, painting bird feeding boxes, and planting and harvesting food which children could eat together and take home. Crops grown included lettuces, onions, potatoes, radishes, spring onions and beetroot. Children helped maintain the garden and look after the shared green space so that others in the local area could also enjoy it.
-
e Y-Foodbank: In 2025 we continued our partnership with CFINE/FareShare, supporting families experiencing financial pressure with access to healthy, nutritious food. This work helps reduce food waste while supporting children’s healthy growth and development. We also continued our reuse and recycling support through ongoing donations of school uniforms, clothing, shoes, toys and household goods. Families could approach staff for practical assistance, helping ensure children had warm, suitable clothing year-round and reducing financial strain for low-income households.
4. JUST WORLD
-
e Y-Café: Our Y-Café continued to run weekly in 2025, supporting people in the local area to connect with others, nurture friendships, and access further support when needed. For many attendees, the café provides a consistent, safe and welcoming environment, with staff offering a listening ear and practical guidance. Attendees could also access wider YMCA supports including the foodbank, employability sessions and clothing recycling.Ross BakerySome for generousvulnerable weeklyindividuals donationsbenefited of rowies.from Y-Café1:1 support providesacross freea tea/coffeerange of issues. and refreshments,We are grateful to offering warmth and community to those experiencing loneliness and isolation.
-
e Scottish Gas Networks (SGN): In 2025 we remained grateful for support from SGN, in partnership with YMCA Scotland, helping sustain our vital work and strengthen our inclusive approach. Staff and young volunteers supported community distribution of the “Keeping You Safe & Warm” booklet in surrounding streets and local schools, helping ensure people had accessible safety and warmth information.
-
e International Youth Exchange: In August 2025, we welcomed young people from CVJM Regensburg to Aberdeen YMCA. The week offered a wide range of opportunities for cultural exchange, shared experiences and deepening friendships. Highlights included visiting Stonehaven beach and harbour, a beach fire at Aberdeen beach, and an arranged visit with the Deputy Lord Provost, including a tour of the Town House. The group also visited Fittie and the new harbour for dolphin watching, explored Drum Castle, visited Aberdeen University grounds, and enjoyed local parks. YMCA young people who had visited CVJM in 2024 were delighted to host and strengthen these international friendships during the week.

Financial review Brief statement of the charity’s policy | YMCA Aberdeen has established a policy whereby the unrestricted funds on reserves not committed or invested in tangible fixed assets (the “free reserves) should be at least 1 year’s annual expenditure in general funds. At this level, the Board of Trustees considers that it would be able to continue the current activities of the charity in the event of a significant drop in funding and maintain its obligations for payment of its pension liability amount. Details of any deficit Not applicable. Donated facilities and services (if any) | N/A Other optional information YMCA Aberdeen historically was a participating employer in a national YMCA contributory pension plan providing benefits based on final pensionable pay to employees of all member YMCAs. The assets of the YMCA Pension Plan are held separately from those of YMCA YMCA Aberdeen and have significant liabilities determined by a qualified actuary based on triennial valuations using the projected unit method. YMCA Aberdeen is required to make proportionate monthly payments for the foreseeable future as required by the plan's actuary as indicated in the Notes to the Financial Statements. The Board of Trustees ensures that there are sufficient funds to meet the needs of the the future pension liability commitments. In concluding our financial review to 31 May 2025, the Board of Trustees continues to monitor expenditure closely and explore all options to ensure that our charitable activities are delivered in a financially sustainable manner. Incoming receipts continue to be of concern and this is exacerbated by increasing outgoing payments linked to inflation. Our priority remains ensuring YMCA Aberdeen can continue empowering young people in body, mind and spirit today, tomorrow, and for future generations and with this in mind, unless incoming receipts can cover the operational costs of our charitable activities in the next year, the Board of Trustees will have significant decisions to make to ensure the long term viability of YMCA in Aberdeen. Declaration The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above. Signed on behalf of the charity’s trustees Signature(s) Full name(s) Position (e.g. Chair) Chairman Honorary Treasure Date 18 December 2025 12 December 2025
