R￿￿11 i¢sluiL West Church buildin¥ ￿ rlosed To date progressing the ¢r¢alion of the union for Kuthrieston Wtsl irnplicit in the revised Mission Plan ha5 been inhibited by un£ertainty relating to other rongregalions within the Are& Group. Firstly, Kingswells sought as their rirsi prefer¢nce ￿exPlOre the possibility of a union with congregations in the Gordon Presbytery namely, Westhill

and Skene, 50rn¢thing onlvFKJssible afterthe(r￿l0n ofthe new ¢nlaTged Presbyw fwthe wholeof thenortheast of Scoiland in 2023. 8econdly foltowit)8 the decision of Re%. demit th¢ ¢hargc at Pcterculiry, that ci)n8r¢gation a150 wanted to eKplore ihe rM)ssibility of a union 14 iih other congregations. These deyelopments madc thc precise ideniificatton of union parniers wrthin the Area Group uncenain. What •nttges most likely is that a union IKtween thc Craigiebuckler, Manrmjfield ond Ruthrieston West congregations wrll pn)ceed in 2023 and thai this may, or may no4 includv Cults. Mallers will become clear once the ￿SItionS of the Kingswells and Peterculter congrrgations are 5cttkd. As befor¢ Ruthrieston we￿ fU￿S itself having to rtsw)tKI a5 be￿ il C4TL to circumstances over which it has little if any direct influence. The 8reate￿ conc¢m is the possibility of having io cluse our church buildings before the conclusion of satisfacrory union diSc￿S1On$. To ameliorne this risK the Ruthri¢sion we￿ Kirk Session has developed a defallliplan which li will bui onty if a union b&snoi previou5ty been creknlbefote the Imr￿d closure d. Albeit the r¢vised Presbytery Plan marks a new FM)licy of ¢losinga groupofcunrni]y viable tongregaiions {includingour own) with the intention of Cr￿]ng, through union4 a smaller group of mor¢ 5usthinable congre8ations there 14 apparently. no Strdte8y for the disposal of thur<h buildings. Thc publtshul guidance is 20 years old and relatrs to the ad hoc disposal of individual church building following the prior forn)￿10￿ of new unions. Reflectingthis approac th¢ suggestion has len made that no steps for th¢ disposal of church ￿￿tIdIngS can be m&Jc before uni(Trns com¢ into exisience. If this is the posinon, theTe is negligible realistic Pros￿et of the Euilding tKing dIsw￿d ofbefore losure. Thi5 however can only be a Wial solution 2nd requtr¢s member5 to volunteer time and effort in an obviousty thankless t&%k when ther lime should I￿tter be dcvotrd its n¢w Mission￿ work bein8 undertaken by the new union. M&tters are aggravat¢d by the rwutrtmeni of Church law that all adivity. including rev¢nu¢ generating letting of the hail& must cea5c as and when the church I￿]lding is no longer used for wtr5hip. In ￿lIt10Th, insurdn¢¢ premium costs for building no longer used for purposes of wotship are m￿er￿allY higher. The extent to which all thes¢ concerns were appreciated by thos¢ re5Fwible fow the fonnujaiion of the new Presbytery Mission Plan is unclear. is clear is that none of the concems are addressed in the plan. These thtrefore a￿ m&ner5 for the congregation to k4ress &8 Isi it can. It is io ￿ hopcd that imtnediaie st¢ps can be thken to expedite the distMKal of the church E￿ildIng and pet￿Illg disposal. This will be possible onty if Preswery accepts the need for its Mission Plan to k review¢d. This is Swiethi￿ lying within the control of the Ruthrieston West ¢on8regation. Aehievem¢nts Perfor•aee Against all thai frankly disconcerting background the heart and spirii of the congregation may have fcuidered Wtth a sense of pointlessne&s wevailing. It Is greatty io the cr¢dit of thc Minist¢r. the Stssion, Mern￿rs and all those asso¢iated with the Church. that the risk of a10&8 of hefft has bcen COUnte￿ied by a wide range of aciiviiies and Rnitiaiivv. The Strength and capabtlity of the Kirk Session was markedly enha￿ mid-year by the ind￿tIOn and ordination of three new ruling elders. All three had previ(rttsly made very significant contritrJtions to the life of the congregation and their Ordin￿lOn w&8 a gre￿ IxMJn for Ix)th Ruthrieston We51 and th¢ wider Church cornmunity. This year Saw the well-earned reiirement of our Orbit Editor and transrM)rt cwrdinator who exemplifies the essence of servic¢ wiihin our congregation. Never drawing attention to herself She or ¢reaiing any fuss she w8s entirely effective calling others to wivide help to othus in a manner which rewardillg both for those providing help and those benefJttiH8 frrfft the help. Forthis a very signÈficani debt of grdlitude is owed. L(x)king to the future. Session appointol a steering group (reportÈng lo Session) ts> lead union discussions whe these get underway. It fts intended that the Meering gwup will alw. when nrfessary, addr¢5s and implement the various Practical issues arising frIKn the closure of the church iwildings. The expeLtstion 15 that in due course these matters will b¢come the responsibility of the kirk session of the new congregaiion fomied by union. None of this is to Sugge￿ that the Congregati￿ h&5 mttely been mating time pending a union. Most of the activities curtailed during the pandemic have resumed in one forni or another. The resumption of acttVilie5 has served to reinforce how Yaluable they are, a gwd example being the pmvision of teas and coffees after Sunday service. The congregation benefits gr￿ty from the opwrnity for fellowship this provRde5. The capability within the congregation io undertake worship when th¢ Manister is on Icaye h&$ contÉnually enhanced with the congregation responding tM)5itively to the variety of the servic¢s. Those involved in leading worship are themselve5 rewarded by the eX5￿enCe. A wannly appreciated Christmas Service was conductrd for the staff and residents at Ruthricston House. Alert lo the possibility that various Chrisiian fesiiv41s may be being cel¢bMed for the la￿ time our buildrn& the congregation commttted to marking these festivals in style. The church was ￿UllfullY decorated for Harvest Thanksgiving and. together with the large hafi. for Advent and Christmas. The congregaiion has prDvided direci support to the Inchgarth Foodbank with donations of f(MKI Sbjffs and financial support garnered al Harvest Thanksgiving and the tremendou51y suc£essful (kgan Extrdvagallz A particular feature of our Sunday worship that should not go unrnartcd is the regular presence of and contribution5 by our Sunday Club for church famÈlies. li is gre*ty to the credit ofthe dedicated Club leaders and th¢ Minister that the numb¢r of youngsters attending the Club incre￿￿ in 2022. Tlte r￿tllre Whatever the future holds for the congregation there is no doubt that this will ￿ a very significant chapter in ats history. Whether or not this is related to impthding closure of the church building there is a palpable ￿d. for many. increasing appreciation of fellowship within the c(mgr¢gation, le&Jing to art ever-ekw relationship with God and those we seek to serve. How Blessed we are. Paul's second letter to the Corinthians is one that is thoughi to have been written during a distressing tim¢. As such it May have singular relevance for us. FlnaDelal Review The year under review saw a gradual return to norniality after years th41 were dominated by the pandemi¢. For most of the year contribuitons from members of the congregattoD bore good coinparison to previou$ years but there app¢ared 10 be a small reduciion towards the end of the year. Similarly. tax recoveries ihrough ihe Cyift Aid Scheme held up unlil the last return for the year. The use of the hall8 genernlly made a usetul ¢ontribuiion in line wilh the budget, though at lower levels than we enjoyed pr¢-pandemic. In lotal. regular sources ol. tncome fell short of budget by £3.167, but there was a one-off addition of £4,253 r¢sultin8 frorn the closure of the publie8tions bank account. All items of expenditure compared closely io budget though individual Small increases combined io make an overspend of £2.664. Therefore, before iaking into acc(iuni gains and losses on inve$tmenrs, the General Fund incurred tt deficit of £20,349. slightly more ihan the budget of £18,766. F.xpendilure charged lu ihe Fabric Fund totalled £6,638 in the year. the Inain item betng the r¢placement of the gas fire in the loun&ye of th¢ manse. Ihis lund inLurr¢d a deficit of £5.798 hefore taking into account losses from investments. The naiur¢ of the church buildin85 and th¢ manse means that we are always suscepliblo lo costly repairs with resulting deficit5 for ihe fund and the ne¢d for recourse to ¢ncashm¢ni of inv¢s¢menis. The reserves of the Church at the end of the year iotalled £646.237, a reduction of £57.513 from th¢ previous year's Ioial of £703,750. Of this tolal. £508,785 is represented by (he holding v4lue of th¢ manse. Liquid re50urce$, inwestrnenis (£141,847) and bank balances1£16,720) ioiAll¢d £1 58,567. During the y¢ar Iwo further inslalmeni repaym¢nls of the loan from the Church of Scotland General Trn5tees were made and ihe balance otst5tanding al the year.end SiL)od al £23.741. Iii keeping with investsnenis gener#lly, the urtit values of our invesimenis fell during the year and some losses were incU￿¢d from the sales thai were required io fund the deficits on the Gen¢rnl and Fabric Funds together with the loan repayrnenis. As is mentioned in more delail e15¢where in this report, our future as independent tongregaiion h85. under the Prc5byiery of AberiJ¢en and Shetland Plan, been prescribed and our buildings are to be closed by 3 1° December 2023. For ihe y¢ar 2023 we will continue to 0￿rale independ¢ntly bui wiihin th¢ Wesi Aberdeen Grouping while working towards & union. Inveslment Policy and PerformAn£e The Church's investment policy is io obtain a good rate of return wiihoui exposing its funds to undue risk. Accordingly, the reserves of the Gerjeral and Fabric Funds are invest¢d substsnlially with the Church of Scotland Investor5 Trust it5 Income Fund. The Income Fllnd incurred a negative return of12.2 Q/D for the year. This fund 15 invested in pr¢domin8nily r￿ed inieregt securities and operdled on a ¢Jnttised basis. The unit price of the Income Fund at 31 December 2022 fell by 15Dh over the year. Compared with the Financial Times All Share Index which fell by 30/•. Rlsk M*n#g¢rnent

The Church has in place a structure of o￿l¢ers and c4)mmittees which deal with the various aspects ofthe Chur¢h's operdt10115 and admtnistrdlion. These committees have procedure5 to identify risks which may arise from time to lime and the rneans io couTrlern¢t these, so that any impact on ihe Church's operdtions is mitigated. In Parficular, a Close w4tch is kepl on the lev¢] of inrorN¢ that is needed to meet the annual costs and the support of the congregation gives greai en¢ourag¢mcnt. Costs ar¢ kept und¢r control but inevitably will be liable to rise in line with inflation. Res¢rveJ Pollcy For the limiled life in prospect for the wngregation. th¢rc are sufficient re8erves lo ensure it can meet its blig4tions to its local work and thc ￿e0t¢r work of ilic Church of Scotland until and ￿Yortd the prospectiv¢ union wilh otlier congregations. If these circumstances We￿ to chang¥, these reserves would be enough only to coniinue inderrndenily for a relatively few years. Ai th¢ end of 2022 the Chureh had unrestricted funds of £587,341, of which £509,149 wa5 dcsignal￿ for the Fabric ttnd £12.933 for the E)¢velopment Fund. In addition, the Resiricted Pabrie fund h¢ld a balance uf £58,806.
