History of Education Centre (Lothian SCIO)SCO12269 | Annual Report April 2024 to March 2025
Annual Report
Another busy year in the Victorian Schoolroom. Our footfall for 24/25 was 900 visitors. We had particularly busy months in November and December while January to March proved very busy too. As usual DOD was a success on Saturday 28[th] and Sunday 29[th] September. We ran a reduced number of “real Victorian lessons” on each day which were thoroughly “enjoyed” by our visitors. Our visitors also regaled us with lots of stories of their time in school. About 300 visitors came on DOD.
Many of our school visitors are from outwith Edinburgh city (Fife,North Lanarkshire, Central Belt) and have to rely on coach hire. This has caused some bookings to be cancelled as the hire is restrictive for a lot of schools. However we have been attracting many schools from East Lothian who have been travelling by train and then the tram to try to reduce the cost.
We have made some improvements in the Home Life Museum with help from The Men's Shed. The pulley has been installed in full working order and we now have a shelf on the window wall so that we can display more of our numerous kitchen items. Our Heart janitors have installed a system to open some windows in the Heritage Suite as it gets very warm in the room in summer.
A unit being built by the Men's Shed for the centre of the room is underway and will hopefully be installed over the summer.
Two film producers used our schoolroom to make short films. One was a Horror movie made by a final year student at Napier university and the other was a school themed film by an American company. Both paid fees for the use of the schoolroom although one of the desks did suffer minor damage in the process. We have now installed a mini CCTV camera in each room to discourage potential vandalism while open.
Newhaven is an Intergenerational Community and is involved in a project called Schooldays which we have been collaborating with. It is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Many groups who use The Heart have been
participating in this along with a group of children from each of the primary schools around Newhaven. It fosters collaboration, learning new skills, discussion, making new friends and having fun. An exhibition is planned for the end of the project this coming year. We have also been lending some of our objects for the various events taking place in the Heart. We have recruited two new volunteers to our group. We now have 8 role play teachers. Our Trustees remain at 3. Volunteers have been helping with creating a catalogue of our many objects which is still to be completed. At long last we now have new shirts for the boys ecruited a keen sewer to help and we now have very smart boys attending school. New waistcoats are on their way too. As this has been a busy year our balance has increased too. It is a very healthy £12,315.71 as end of March 2025. Now that we are in year 3 of our time at Newhaven our rental and services costs have increased twice over the last year. As of end March '25 services St cost was £117.30 and increased again July 1 to £120.66 per month. hair of trustees 14th May 2025
