MONIKIE & NEWBIGGING AND MURROES & TEAUNG CHURCH OF SCOTLAND TRUSTEES, ANNUAL REPORT (Conyd) YEAR ENDED 310ECEMBER 2022 Structure, Governance and Managernent Governing Document The Church is administered in accordan￿ wtth the terms of the Deed of Constttution {Unitsry Fonnl. Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees Members of the Kirk Session are the charity trustees. The Kirk Session members are the elders of the church and are chosen from those members of the church who are considered to have the appropriate gifts and skills. The minister, who is a member of the Kirk Session. is elected by the congregation and indurted by Presbytery. Where the congregation 15 Wlthout a minister, an Interim Moderator of the Kirk Session is appointed by Presbytery. The Interim Moderator is also a Trustee. Organisational 5trurture The Kirk Session, which meets several times a yeai, is responsible for spiritual affairs within the church as well as finance, fabric, fund raisin& outreach and all other matters in connection with the life of the parish. Objectives and Activities The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in doctrine, Reformed in tradition and Presbyterian in polity. It exists to glorify God and to work for the advancement of Christ's Kingdom throughout the world. As a national Church, it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty to bring the ordInan￿S of religion to the people in every parish of Scotland through a territorial ministry. It co- operates with other Churches in various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond. Services of worship are held everysunday. The Sacrament of Communion has usually been celebrated twice a year in church, plus an outdoor or barn Communion seNice in the summer (though all of these have not yet resumed following the pandemic). Children are always welcome. There are suitably qualified adults to run a programme suwted to their needs, which aims to make them feel valued and to help thern grow in their faith. For adults, the Guild and the Regnal are Christian org3nisation5 open to the wider community- Each has a programme of visiting speakers and events. including going out and about beyond the churches. Both are important in fostering friendships, which naturally lead to a support network for any member having a difficult time e.g. through illness or bereavement. The remit of the Social Group is to organise social and fundraising events for the congregation, though in prartice these are generally attended by non-members as well as members. This is seen as an important way of connecting with the wider community as much as a means ofgatheringfunds. The Kirk Session typically meets every 6 weeks (apart from in the summer}. With the minister lor Interim Moderator) thev have responsibility for financial matters. care of property. care of people Isafeguarding, data protection. pastoral care, health and safety) and keeping up-to-date with infomation, guidance and instructions from Dundee Presbytery and the General Assembly. plus any other church-related matter brought to their attention. Achievements and Perfomian Over the year our usual activities began to pick up as everyone's life began to get back to normal following the worst of the pandemic and people returned both to Sunday worship and fellowship. Sunday morning services are held alternately in Murroes and Monikie Churches and if there is a fifth Sunday in the month, the congregation worships in one of the communtty halls in the parish. There is a fair degree of continuity although there is no full-time minister in post, as there are four ministers (plus the Interim Moderator) who regularly provide pulpit supplv and in addition we now have one Accredited Worship Leader and three in training. The Choir also leads worship on occasion. A Songs of Praise service was held to thank each of our organists for their years of service. followed by tea and a homebaked celebration cake. Since July. the fifth Sunday services have taken the form of Cafe Church and this is proving popular. Chatty Church was launched in September.. heSd once a month. this is a less formal gathering for worship and friendship, both indoors and in the countryside in which we are located. The local Scouting group returned to Church to celebrate Founders, Day in February and Remembrance Sunday in November, with the children and young people being

MONIKIE & NEWBIGGING AND MURROES & TEAUNG CHURCH OF SCOTLAND TRUSTEES, ANNUAL REPORT (Convd) YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2022 artively involved in the service. This year has been marked by several innovations in worship, including drama. more lay participation and the use of Junior Praise as well as CH4. The Guild now holds all its meetings in the afternoon and has welcomed several new members. A highlight was the afternoon tea party held to celebrate the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The Social Group reconvened under joint leadership. The Duck Race and Aftemoon Teas. always popular with the local community, took place in the summer. The Christmas Fayre, back again in Monikie Memorial Hall, was extremely well supported by church members and local residents. This was a valuable opportunity to reconnect with people as well as a welcome boost to our funds. Not all money raised was retsined. OfferinES from the Christingle and Watchnight Se￿iCe5 were divided equally between the local branch of the Salvation Army and the Ukraine Appeal. As in previous years. shoeboxes were filled for the Blyth5wood Care charity which transports these Christmas gifts to Eastern Europe. See below for our Christian Aid fundraiser. In January, the Interim Moderator met individually and face to face with each member of the Kirk Session= a valuable opportunity for elders and the l.m. to get to know one another better and enabling elders to share their own thoughts on the current situation in the congregation and parish as well as on the way foTh¥ard with reference to mission planning. This was followed up by an invitation to a simple lunch in Murroes Church Hall later in the year. A recurring theme of the past year has been building relationships. both within the congregation and with the congregation of Monifieth Parish Church. With the ending of the pandemic restrictions, the Pastoral Group have been able to resume in- person visits, which are always appreciated but perhaps especially by those who do not have internet access to receive the weekly intimation sheet and monthly news sheet (though some are posted or delivered by handl. Generally people prefer to meet and to worship in person. but Zoom has proved invaluable for Sunday services and business meetings during icy weather. 2022 has been a year in which the imperatbve for change has had to be faced throughout the Church of Scotland, our own congregation being no exception. The strong emotions expressed on the day of the votes on the proposed linkage with Monifieth and sale of our two church buildings (neither vote resulted in a majority for adoption of the proposals) could not be ignored and so two meetings for the Kirk Session were arranged with Place for Hope. Those who attended found them helpful and 3 third meeting open to the congregation was arranged. but had to be cancelled due to a lack of people registering. There were also two afternoons held in a local swrts club for members of MNMT and Monifieth, not for physical exercise but to promote friendship. to worship together and to provide an opportunity for people to voice their feelings about the proposed union of the two congregations as well as to contribute ideas for the joint Local Mission Plan document which was required by Presbytery. In addition there were a few meetings of the South Angus Cluster for clergy, and clergy with congregational representatives. By the end of the year, the Kirk Sessions of MNMT and Monifieth were looking forward with poswtivity towards the union. and increasingly members of each congregation were involving themselves with the other: for instance. through worship, walks. COn￿rts. lunches. The first joint service was held in Monikie Church and conducted by tFie minister of Monifieth. The first joint event was a fundraiser for Christian Aid, held in Monifieth Church, with a tea room and 5ts115 selling horne bakin& cards and crafts. and Fair Trade items,. the handover of the cheque to a Christian staff member w'i- raphed for Life and Work (Church of Scotland monthly magazinel. No-one has felt able to take on the role of Session Clerk though lunteered to be the minute taker; this aids the smooth running of meetings as well as any work tha Iscussion. MONIKIE & NEWBIGGING AND MURROES & TEAUNG CHURCH OF SCOTLAND TRUSTEES. ANNUAL REPORT (Conyd) YEAR ENOED 31 DECEMBER 2022 Financial Review The principal source of income consists of regular weekly or monthly donations for the Church. Regular Gift Aid donations remained stable as did tax recovered on Gift Aid. Overall, receipts from all types of donations were lower by 7% I£2.471) compared with 2021. While investment income was lower, the other beneficial source of income from fundraising / social activities was £2.547. leading to an overall reduction in income of only £439 compared with 2021. A negative on the financial position is that costs were up by 9%1£3.4131 compared to 2021. The increased costs were in part due to an overall increase in the Congregation's Ministries and Mission all(Kation. The increase in energy tariffs meant a higher Heat and Light cost which wa5 up by £2.136176%1. Fabric repairs showed an increase o* £1.694185%1 a5 the Trustees continued to maintain the churches and hall. There are no areas of financial concern, due to the resernes held by Monikie & Newbigging and Murroes & Tealing Church. Details of the various funds are shown in note 5. Reserves Policy At the year end the Church held unrestrirted cash funds of £119.25612021 £124,994), which exceeds 12 months expenditure. These reserves are high, but the Trustees are aware that funds provide a necessary buffer and are required for potential fabric maintenance and continuing outreach projects and with a potential decline in regular giving. The Church has £319,94612021 £318,847) of restricted fund5 held by The Church of Scotland. The funds are held initially for the upkeep of the two Church buildings and Church Hall. Statement of Trustees. Responsibilities The members of the Kirk session must prepare financial statements which give sufficient detail to enable an appreciation of the transactions of the Church during the financial year.
