Structurè, governance and management
Govoming document
Since 2011 the Congregation has adopted a unitary constitution. Accordlngly the Kirk Session has the
responsibilty for the spiritual and temporal mallers of the Congregation. The Kirk Sossion meets 6
times a year and is moderated by the minister. The work of the Sesslon is split into sev8ral working
groups which report back to the Session. These are Resources, Fo15owship, Community and Our
Worfd and Nurture and Praise.
Recruitment and Appointmgnt of Trustggs
Members of the Kirk Session are the Gharity tnjstees. The Klrk Session members are Ihe elders of the
Church and are chosen from those mefflbers of the Church who are consid8red to have th8
appropriate gifts and skills. The minister, who is a member of the Kirk Session, is elected by the
congregation and inducted by the Presbytery.
Organlsatlonal Stru¢turg
The Kirk Session meets six limes a year and Is moderaled by the minister. Certain r88pon8Sbllltle8 are
delegaled to the Resources GTOUP as appropriate.
Objectivgs and activitiès
The Church of Scotland IÈ Trinitarian In doctrine. Reformod in Iradilion and Presbyterian in polity. It
exists to glorrfy God to work for the advancement of Christ's Kingdom throughout the world. As a
national church, il acknowledges a distinctive call ané duty to bring the ordinances of religion to the
people in every parish of Scotland thToughoul a territorial ministry. It cooperates with other churches in
various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond.
The vision and mission of St Nlcholas Is lo follow Christ's example, to be a carlng Church, c8nlral lo
the life of the communlty and thus act as beacon of everything that the Gongregallon does.
Usually worship takes place In St Nlcholas every Sunday al 10.30 am and Wednesdays al 10.15arn.
The sacrament of Holy Communlon Is celebrated 4 times a year in March, June. September and
December and 2t other special occaslons throughout the year.
A wide range of worship styles can be experienced throughout the year Includlng advenvchrislmas
reflective, holy week, as well as joint ecumenical services Mqth other denominations within the town.
2024 has been a posilive year for Sl Nichdas as we have continued lo rebulld relationships and
strengthen links within the Community. continuing lo be a church at the heart of the community.
Our community has continued to Ilourish as we continue on our mission lo be a caring church at the
centre of the community. We aim to sland wth people in the joys and sorrows of life and proclaim the
gospel of Jesus Christ.
In 2024 we continued to play a huge part in our community while celebrallng our 250th annlversary,
enjoying a congregational lunoh al Lanark goll club alongside a floral exhibition displaying festivals
and celebrations throughout the Christian ye2r as well as showing St Nicholas throughout the year.

rom GreyfrLqrs Parish Church have also been heavily invofved with chaplaincy
work at Lanark Grammar school, leading assemblies, class work and helping pupils and staff navigate
bereavements wilhln the school family.
As well as focusing on the needs of our community, Sl Nicholas is also passionate about reaching out
to others across the wortd. Our Kirt( Session sponsor a young boy in Soulh America through th&
Compassion initiatwe, having already helped another boy complate h1$ education in AfriGa.
In 2012 2 need was recognised for helping IhosÈ who Teached a polnl of feellng that life was no longer
worth Ilvlng. In response lo this need, Hèar For You was sel up. The pmjecl offers one-lo-one,
fac&lo-face Gounselling for (hose who are conlgmplating suicide or are aftecled by suicide. Although
Hear For You is now an independent charity, It is c5osely Ilnk8d wllh Sl N￿hOlaS Parish Church who
raise awareness and help fundraise.
The Kirk Session has also agmd to continue to match fund the project with the 'Go For It, fund from
the Church of Scotland.
Achlevemants and perfomiance
OurJoumey in Worship
Worship wllhin Sl Nicholas has blossomed once again followng life relurning to normal once
again. Being ablo to celgbrale all holy foslivals together as a church family wthoul rastriclions has
allowed new relationships lo build and f8llow8hip to be strength8ned.
Communicatlons
The church office provides a hub of hard work and information, through the church secretary. Keeping
th& congregation aware of d￿lSIonS and planning is a necessary endeavour. and many leaflets and
the church magazine are edited, printed and collated by a willing and able team, and then distributed
by the elders. Thanks are given to everyone involvad.
People and Groups
The fellowship group conts'nued the monthly walking group on Sunday 8ftemoon3. A GhanGe for people
to benefit from walking in the fresh alr and enjoy fellowship. They have organised 30cial and
fundraising activities.
In 2024 we have cr8aled a strong Ilnk with the charity Scot baby box appeal who send baby boxes
2nd other aid out lo Ukralne lo provide aid durlng the ongoing conflict w(fh Russia. This has
strengthened links with schools, nursery and the wider communlly who have been hugely generous in
their response lo loo￿ng to help a war-torn county.
The Church roll al the end of 2024 stood at 387 members
The ministgr has conducted 2 weddings and 89 funerals in 2024

Achlgvgmonts and porformance {conrfnu•rfJ
Thg Communlty
St Nicholas has been the initiator of the Heal For You Group, which reaches out and supports
prevention of suicide and those affected by SLJicide. Thls has seen an increase in calls as we emerged
from the Covid pandemic, with many people struggllng with mental health and the wst of living crisls
which appears still lo be ongoing.
Thls year also Saw th8 return of our community bereavement gmup 'Gmd to Talk. which offo15 a
Spa￿ for those in the town and local area who are struggling with grief and loss and a safe spac8 to
Share experienc8S.
Other Churches
In 2024 we worked alongsld& other churches in town on civic events such as Remembrance Sunday,
Wodd Day of Prayer and Lanark Lanlmer klrkin service.
We are also strengthening links with Carstairs, Carnwalh and Forth St Pauls with whom we are
looking to enter Into a parish grouping in the midst of the on￿Ing Presbytery plan.

jobs lo do and carry them out wilhoul complainlng.. the conveners of the groups, and all who contributè

The p￿ncIpal sources of income continue to be offerings, in the form of WFO Scheme (Non Gtft Aid),
Glfl Ald, Ordinary Offerlngs (Open Platel, and Tax Recovered on Grft Aid. From 2023 to 2024 th8se
offerings reduced by £7,189 10 £83.654 {2023: £90,843)
Total income for 2024 was £129,525 (2023.. £136,034), an decrease of £6,509 on 2023, bul noting
that In 2023 there was a single signifunt donation which boosted that year's total.
Total expenditure increased from £137,722 in 2023 to £157,625 In 2024. Costs conllnue to be
monitored closety, including t￿ significant fabrlc repairs and malnlenance in the year.
The resuwing deficit for the year, prior lo the net increase In Inves11119111 value, was £28,10012023'.

The charlty trustèes have considered the reserves required and have taken into acwunl their current
and future Ilabllllies. 11 is the Irusle85' policy to hold reserves (including designated funds) of al least
approximately six months eXpen￿￿uré. Al the year end the Church held unreslricted cash funds of
£49,58112023.. £77,653) of whl¢h £31,20212023.' £67.3651 had been designated as shown in note 22.
The unrestricted fund balance represents about four month8 expenditure. This is lower than would
normally b& expected, and the Iwslees will continue their efforts to keep expenditLJre to a minimum.

The Irusteas invest surplus funds in various Church of Scotl&nd funds. These are seen as relatively
risk free investments within the control of the ChurGh that provlde some relum lo the charity.

Whilst there are no immediate risks, longer term the risks are'.-
a) Ihe lack of young members resulting in an ageing conQ￿allOn,
bl t￿ resullanl loss of Income to support our activities as numbers reduce, and
cl the move of the Church to the periphery of Community lrfe.
Our Kirk Session will use our exlsling volunteer r690urces lo help develop goals and objeGtives lo
address those risks.
Plans for future pgrlods
The year coming will be another challenging one for us as we continue to navigate our way through
these difficult times and support our church and community, always remembering that we alm lo follow
Christ's example lo be a caring Church central lo the life of Lanark.

legislation and Is therefore not subject to laxalion on ils charitable activities. The charity is not
registered for VAT and expondilure therefore includes irrecover3ble input VAT.
Judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty
The p￿paratIon of the financlal slalemenls requires the Iruslees lo make judgements, estimates
and assumption$ that affect the amounts rewrted. These estimates and judgements are
continually reviewed and are based on experience and other factors, including expectations of
future events that are b8lieved lo be reasonable under the circumstanGes.
Accounting estimates and assumpt￿n$ are made concerning thg fiJlur• and, by their nature, will
rarely equal the related actual outcome.

Fund accountlng
Funds are Glassrfied as elther restricted funds or unroslricled funds, defined as follows.
Restricted funds are funds subject lo specific requirements a8 to their use which may be
dee12red by the donor or with their authority or created through legal processes, bul still within
the wider objects of the charlty.
Endowment funds are funds which have been given on the Gondilion that the original capital sum
is not reduced, bul the Income therefrom is used for the purpose defined in accordance with the
oblecls of the charity.
Unrestrictecl funds are expendable al the discretion of the trustees in furtheranoe of the objects of
the charity. If parts of the unreslricled funds are èarmarked al the discretion of the trustees for a
Particular purpose, they are designated as a separate fund. This designation has an
adminislr81ive purpose only and does not legally restrict the tnjstees, discretion to apply the fund.
Income
All income is included in the statement of financial 8clivilies when entitlement has passed to the
charity, it is probable that the economic benefits associated with the transaction will flow to the

Flnanclal Instrumènts
A financial asset or a financial liability is recognis8d only wh8n the entity becomes a paty lo the

Basic financial instruments are initially recognised al the amount receivable or payable induding
any related transaction costs, unless the arrangement constitutes ? financing transaction, where
it is recognised at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of
interest for a similar debt instrument.
Current assets and current liabilities are subsequently measured at the cash or other
considerallon expected lo be paid or received and not discounted.
Debt instruments are subsequenuy measured at amortised cost.
Where investments in shares or preferencè shares are publicly traded or their fair value can
otherwise be measured reliably, the investment is subsequently measured al fair value with
Ghanges in fair value recognised in income and expenditure. All other such investments are
subsequendy measured al cost less impairment.

In common wlth all congregallons of the Church of Scouand, the congregation benefits from the
contrfbulions made by volunteers who give their lime and talents willingly for the benefit of the
Church. The areas of congregational lrfe which rely on the conlribulion of volunteers are many
and varied and much of the activity would be unable lo continue were il not for the commitment
shown.
