We are dellghted to welcome new Centre Asslstants to augment our teams. In addltion, U3A h8S monthly exclusive Saturday morning sesslon and a DNA group I hosted by one of our volunteers once a fortnight. We are very pleased to welcome the long-awaited Research Centre Handbook as a guide for key holders, Centre Assistants and other volunteers. The GWSFHS Office Team, formed in January 2023 in order to deal more effectfvely wlth Issues of a local nature pertainlng to the Research Centre In Mansfield St., Is now well establlshed. Thls year we have arranged a deep clean of the prernlses, carrled out an Inventory• updated the Where Is It no￿, document and have collaboratively produced The Research Centre Handbook, a gulde for Centre Assistants and volunteers. We are currently attempting to improve the physlcal surroundlngs In the premlses to create a more weicomlng and aesthetlcally-pleaslng atmosphere. However, Council had declded that there was a backlog of new publications that needed to be reviewed, edited. laid out and pubtished. They had thus advertised in the Journal and I was able to respond to the call to fill this role. During December, I have produced draft PDF versions of both "A History of the Waddelis of Scotland" lin two volumes) and "Steven & Struthers. the Story of a Glasgow Bronze Foundry and the STEVEN Famlly". We antSclpate that these wlll become av8iiabie In the GWSFHS Shop early in 2025. Continuing earller work that IrKlexe(I the Soutlwn NecropoLls western sectlon has progressed using online microsoft forms technology. This enables us to engage distant members who can conlribute from home. Our collection of plans showing burial grounds has been Improved both In paper and electronic files. We continued to offer monthly talks via Zoom throughout the twelve months of 2024. The pre￿nter$ offered 8 rango of toplcs, and all were very well attended. Uslng Zoom allows our members who live at a distsnce to take part In our meetlngs and to enjoy the learnln8 that the Society has on offer. Foliowlng each rneetlng, our Chair, Scott Falrle, opens the "ftoorf to all in attendance so that V￿ can virtually meet one another or discuss any topic related to family history. This helps those of us who mlss the °in person" meetings to feel like we are stlll Connected to one another.

Members of the team have replied to more Ihan 100 queries in 2024. mostly from members also from non-members who contact our research email address. In the comlng year, the team hope to expand on research resources wlthln the Research Centre and bulld a Ilst of resources to publlsh on the soclety's webslte. A DNA study group has been meeting fortni8htly slnce February 2023. It Is intended for members who have taken a DNA test and have already been using thelr results to ald their research. Meetings take the form of a workshop where partlclpanls can share thelr experiences and learn from others. The number of partlclpants Is Ilmlted by the accommodation avallable at Mansfield Street, but has been as many as a dozen. It Is generally well-attended. Among the many subjects discussed have been the relative usefulness of autosomal and Y-DNA male line tests; the pros and cons of the various testlng cornpanles,. how to make the best use of match Ilsts. the usefulness and a¢¢uraey of ethnicity estlrnates; methods of Identifying unknown ancestors et¢. Members are aLso encouraged to tell the group about any discoveries they have made wlth the ald of their DNA results.

The Shop was the first section completed and there are plans to improve the Sear¢h function, the Member Account section and the Members, Area in general. We uploaded 10,800 images and trans¢rlptlons of monumental inscriptions from the Glasgow Necropolls (45% of the totall and 7,977 Images and transcrlptlons of monumental Inscrlptlons from the Tollcross Cemetery. The Technlcal Team contlnues to meet fortnlghtly• uslng Mlcrosoft Teams, to dlscuss Issues wlth the webslte and the provlslon of servSces In the Research Centre and online. We have a specific goal of upgrading all our Pcs to Wlndows 11 by the end of 2025 when Mlcro%fft removes support for Wlndows 10. 2024 Saw the re-stsrtlng of the Southern Necropous Indexlng Project (SNIPI that the soclety had Indexed up to June 1890. Thls has entailed establishing a nevi way of data gathering usin8 Mi¢rosofl form$, 811owing us to Eather data from multiple volunteer trans¢riber3 to a single master spreadsheet. We have already completed 9 years of data to May 1899, a totsl of 7,461 records. Wlth the support of the IT Team, the Soclety beean th1$ summer to provlde a day specifically for volunteers called Volunteer Wednesday. Thls has allowed volunteers of all klnds to havè addltlonal research tlme for themselves as a reward for all their hard work. It is also an opportunlty lo expand times for trainlng and to focus on a varlety of projects. Early in 2025 we would like to focus on further training in the use of FamlLySearch.

Of thls, 74% are women and 26% men, figures vlriually unchanged from the prevlous year. The maI￿lty of followers come from Gias8ow and the Central Belt, but we also have a slzeabie number from Australla. The private Faceb¢)ok Group. Instagram is building up a strong followlng. including many professlonal genealogists, famlly hlstory socletie8 and Instltutlons. We also have followers from Europe, the United States and Japan. The Soclety has a p￿SenCe on X, fornierly Twltter. Our Journal continues to be published three tlmes a year, In March, June 8nd October. The themes for 2024 were Using helrlooms, memorabllla and ephemera to tell our stories. Scots in India,. and the Impact of War on our Famllles. These have provlded a wlde range of articles across the toplcs plus others of a more general theme. We generally continue to recelve positive feedback f rom our members, whlch Is en¢ouraglng for the Editorial Team. We are enormously grateful to all our membèrs who take the tlme to submlt articles - without them it makes the task of putting a Journal together challenging. We would encourage everyone to think about what contributlons they can make to the Journal for 2025 and beyond be they snlppets of information, full articles related to a family story or an educatlonal ttem whl¢h can help others In thelr research, and the teem will look forward to recelvlng them. 10

Year ended 31" D•c•mber 2024 Our Enew5 electronlc newsletter has gone out almost vrfery month to more than 1400 members and non-members who subscribed from the vlebpage. This continues to be a Convenient way to pass on news and events, both at our Society as V￿LI as other related events. The regular ¢ontributlons trom the Trades House are valued, as well as the other random items whlch do not follow any theme. Thls Is an area where short artlcles of general Interest to all, can be submltted. We attended the SAFHS AGM and Council Meeting In March and the Councll meetlng in October. At the AGM. Our Trustee ￿a5 appointed Secretary of SAFHS. We contrlbuted a section of society news to the SAFHS Bulletln pubushed in July. We complled an update to the SAFHS Burial Grounds database for burial grovntls in Greater Glasgow. In December, we welcomed the Chalrman of SAFHS, to our premlses for an Informal di$cusslon. 11

The use of remote intera¢tlon, Inltlally introduced during the Covld Lockdowns, has allowed GWSFHS to expand its work and involve many more mernbers than would have been possible before. Most are payable In July, however since the launch of the redesigned website new members have a rolling twelve months memberships which wlll spread income over the year.
