The practital and financlal vlablllty of the event means that it will be repeated In May 2025. An initial meeting was held between Andrew Abrdhams and trustees from the SBA and the Scottlsh Native Honey Bee Society ISNHBSI on Colonsay to discuss the lonE-terrn pla£ for managing the cobnles and conseryin8 the natlve honey bee. The SBA Is supportlve of plans io establlsh a trust or Similar body to manage things goin8 into the future alxl is happy to be invofved as an organisatlonal member. Moving the AGM to Inverness for 2024 wa5 very successful. and we had not On a higher turnout than usual, but abo representation by many membets who m4ght usualty not be able to attend due to the dlstances invoed. The 5uc¢ess of this event ha5 corrfirmed we wlll cuntinue to have'moving AGMS, to ensure coverage across Scotland where possible. The 5BA once a8ain managed the Honey Tent at the Royal Hbghland Show, Ingliston, In June 2024. The Honey Tent is one of the RHS'S most popular attractlon5, attract18 around 80(Kl v15itor5 daily over the 4 days of the show. lon Natlona Sho The SBA autumn convention takes place each year In September. wr¢h talks from invited speakers, trade stands aE¥J an oprtunitY for SBA members to meet and dlscuss the beekeeplng season. The convention also hosts the Scottish National Honey Show, which recefved Several hundred entrles. and awards Several nolable prlzes to ¢ompetltors each year In a range of da55e5.

Thls took place in Dubal in December 2024. Three young SBA members formed the team which represented Scotland and took part In a number of eveTrt5 and activities, learning about beekeeping in Dubai, and havin8 the opportunity to discuss beekeeping activlties with otheryourE beekeepers from around the world. In 2024, 7 Junlor Beekeeper. 61 Basic Beekeepin& 7 Intemiediate P¥artScal. 4 Aplarlan. and l Honey JudBe certtficates were awarded. Three youn8 beekeepers attended the Intemational Meeting of Young Beekeepers IIMYBI in Dubal. Th15 generates publlcity whlch helps with goal to engage with young people and encourage them to take up beekeepin8. To this end we w511 be endeavouring to provide educational resource material that can be used In Scott15h schools, To make thi5 self-servite to some extent, a series of Sew-a¢$$ vldeo cllps and worksheets have been produced and posied via YouTube on the SBA website. A Young Beekeepers sub-tommlttee has also been forrned. and this will ¢oncenlrate on supporting young beekeepers in Scotland. The SBA Beekeeplng Tralner Certlflcate IBTC). Introduced in 2017 to encourage high standards annESt tralners. has been requested and awarded to 40 Members Since its initiation. It is available to ih05e who have obtalned one of the Intermediate Certificates leither Practical or Module) and who have also either attended one of the SBA Train the Trainers workshops or have a professional teacherfs qUalifallOn. Application detsils are on the webslle. In 2024, 55 Module exam certificates were 8ained by candidates. Seven ?chSeved thelr Intemediate Module Certrflcate Ipassin8 four modulesl and two iheir Advanced Module CertifKate Ipassing ol sÈven module51. Two catNlidates passed the new Plan15 & Pollinators module.

In5pera is a Norwe8lan company specialising In online leawnlng. The candidate sits the exam on thelr computer in their own home. The comper is locked down by the Inspera system and invigilation is vki the computerfs Camera, a candidate monitorlng algorsthm. and remote SBA invigilators. This was obviousty quite a leap in technology use for carndldates but greatty helped by the use of a mock exarn several weeks in advance. The Educatbn Sub Committee has a150 introduced a Module practlce System, consistln8 of three practice papers for each chosen module. The Module exams can now be entered wlthout having flrst obtained a Basic Beekeeplng or Junior Beekeepei rtificate,. however. we strongly encourage beekeepers to a150 Slt these practical assessments. N5 Pro nAw The Hlghland5 and Islands Unlversity in conjunction with Inverness Beekeepers and the SBA has formulated a national course in teekeeping based on the SBA Baslc Beekeeping syllabus. This has been approved by the SQA as a National 5 level Progression 3war(l. This now provldes a course whlch the Scottsh schoo15 ènd colleges can offer. wilh a nationally and Internationally reco8ni5ed qualification. in Asso I tlon train A tremendou5 educational effort is put in by local beekeeplng assoeiatlon rnembets in njnnlng bèginners, classes, mentoring sessions for exam candidalesi giving wlnter talks, and provlding guidance and advlce for beginners. These efforts are much appreclated by the SBA Educatlon Sub Committee. INSURANCE AND COMPENSATION In support of beekeepers in Scotland, the SBA provldes Insuran and compensètlon cover for tts members. Public and Pioducts Liablllty Insurance Is included as part of SBA membership at no extra cost, and tovers the bèekeeplng activities of Personal, Junlor, Household. and Honorary Life mernbers keeplng UP to 40 stocks of bees. Limited cover is also provided to Affiliated Beekeeping Associations IABAs1 who own bees. Thi5 indemnifies members for ¢lalms a8alnst them up to a limit of £IOm, with a further £250,¢XIO legal expenses cover. A Confirmation of Insuran CÈrttftcate Is made avallable to members on the SBA website. Many SBA members are asked to confirm and provide evidence that they have this sort of insurance in relatlon lo thelr beekeeplng attlvitles or their honey sales. Public and Products Llabifity Insurance is purchased by the SBA os part of a wlder Insurance package ensuring ihat the organi5alion Is comprehensSvely indemnthed a8ain5t risks arlsing from the conduct of its business as a national beekeepers, asstxiatlon. No clalms were made under our in5uiance policy i)ver the reporting period. Our Compensatlon 5theme offers some financial recompense to members who have lost bees and hNes due to fire. theft, vandalssm, and the foulbrood diseases. The scheme applie5 to Personal, junior. and Honorary Life member5. Household members mayjoin Ihe scheme on payment of the approprlate fee. Cover under the scheme is also provided to Affiliated Beekeepin8 Associatlons IABASI and io schools who maintain their own èpiaries. The scheme Is limited to membEfs keeplng no rnore than 40 stocks, whkh are tsn covered whilst located in Scotland. DEVELOPMENT The SBA is very conscious that even if honeybees have changed little over the millennia, beekeepers tertalnty have. The trustees, whllst continuing to cater for the needs of traditional beekeepers. seek to engage with beekeepers on modern rnethods, and to meet the expectation5 of the wlder communlty and regulators. In the last year, the Scottish Beekeepers. Assoclatlon has endeavoured to further Its artivltles wlth beekeepe and public ake and educate all in the craft of beekeeping. These activities have included utilising our wet6ite, sooal media sltes like Facetx)ok, Twitter, Linkedln, and In pewson events like The Royal Highland Show. A Deslgnated Compensatlon Fund has a balance of £3.(NJ) which 15 available to be paid out each year at Trustee discretion to beekeepers whose bees and eqLsipment are105t as a result of fi, theft. and the f1brOod diseases. The Compensatlon Fund Sum can be ollocated to applicants on a yearly basls at half the cost of loss replacement and sublett to colony numbers and additnal payments. Structure. Gi)vemance and M*nagem•nt The Scott15h Beekeepers Assoclatlon is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisatbon ISCIOI, re8iStratlon number SC009345. The actlvlties of the A550clation are ultlmatety controlled by the Board of Trustees, whlch meets reBularly throughout the year, guided by a stwctured constitution and supportin8 govemance documents. The SBA operates several sub committees formed to mana8e dally business in an appropriate. effectNe and effkient wèy. These sub committee5 ensure that the SBA pursues its charitable purpose in a professR)nal manner to the benefit of its mernbors. Trustees are appointed OT ieappointed at the Annual General Meeting, wlth each trustee having a perlod of tenure of up lo 3 years. with a maxlmum tlme of SeiCe of 9 consecutive years. The President has Ihe opportunity of having maxirnum trustee tenure of 12 years includlng that of herlhls pre5idencv. The SBA Board of Twstees met on four occasions in 2024, thrèe of these online and once in-person. In addition, our 2024 Annual General Meeting was held on 27 April al the Spectnjm Centre. Inveme5s. This enabled SBA buslness to be conducted and declslons to be made to advance the aims of the associatlon. As well a5 deallN8 wlth busine55 matter5, thls was a welcome opportuntty to meet and enloy social interaction with SBA members from across Scotland. At a national level, the SBA attended meetings with the Scottish Government Bee Health Improvement Partnershlp {BHIPI, Council of Natlonal Beekeeping Asxjciations of the UK ICONBA} and the Natlonal Diploma in Beekeeping group. The funds ale restricted for use in stimulatin8 educatlon in beekeepirva throughout Scotland and to further the work of research in practical beekeeplng and to perpetuate the rnemory of the late Dr John Anderson. The Hary Bfown Memorlal Fund was created from a donation fro in memory of Harry who was a past presi(lent and secretsry of the Scottish Beekeepers Association. These funds were to be used to stlmulate interest in the Scottish Beekeeper Magazlne, provide awards tor competltlons held in the magazine, prowde pr12es for any competitions or8anised by the SBA and perpeiuate the Tnernory of Harry Brown. Dr & Mrs David Tennant left a £500 beqvest to the SBA, and thls has been topped up by the SBA. These funds were lo help repair existing and acquire new books for the Moir Llbrary. N Thomson Bequest Fund Is used for school competltions and awards to further education. IMYB Donatlons were donations received specifically for the IMYB Ilntern*ional Meetlng of Young Beekeepers) expense5 which was held in Slovenla this year. -18-
