CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
As per last year I would like to begin with an overview of the past
vear.
This past year has been another exciting year for the Society.
As reported last year we were awaiting the return of the Civic robes
from the Museum services. They were duly installed in May 2024 and
the Museum Services staff did a very good job of setting up the
display. The only criticism is that the reason given for removing the
robes in 2016 was to clean them. I'm not sure about the robes but
the staff admitted that they haven't cleaned the chains as they don't
know what they are made ofl !
I mentioned last year that we planned to host a reception to launch
the display on 160 years of Turriff show. The Turriff Show committee
sent out over So invitations to past presidents and most of them I
turned up. The show committee also provided the refreshments and
nibbles. It was a great evening with much chatter and reminiscing.
We are indebted to the past secretaries for their scrapbooks and to
Ellis Mutch for compiling a video of past shows. This attracted a lot of
attention.
Following on from this we used some of the show items for our
display at the Show itself, including the videos, along with items
from "Clothing from yesteryear" display, including Jim and Jean our
fashion models. This display resulted in a Winners rosette and the
Castleton Cup. My thanks to all who worked so hard to put the
display together and to the volunteers who manned the stand on the
days of the show.
The building has had a makeover during the year with new double
glazing units being fitted to the office, along with new blind5. On the

outside, the windows and doors were repaired and repainted,
changing from black to a more welcoming red.
Towards the end of the summer, a group of Rotarians helped us to
start clearing up the Auld Kirkyard. We removed a tractor trailer load
of self seeded trees and overgrown brambles and ivy. However there
is still more to do and they plan going back soon to continue the
work. The main problem will be the height of the trees and where
they are placed, but we are looking at the possibilities at our
di5POsal.
Our Doric day for this year was again successful. Our main speaker,
from Fettercairn was excellent, with a great mix of serious
and very funny. We only had
this year and again did a first
class job of entertaining the audience. We had a full house at the
start with only 2 or 3 not staying for the bothy ballads. After lunch
we were mesmerised by the work of Aaron Gale from Huntly. Aaron
has won the Doric film festival twice with his Puppet theatre videos
of nursery rhymes. The amount of work that goes into each
production is amazing as he took us through the various 5tep5 of
putting it all together.
Whilst a member of the Society, Deirdre spent hours researching the
Auld Kirkyard and taking people on walking tours of it. To honour
that we decided to get storey boards installed in the Kirkyard
dedicated to her. I can now show you the finished boards. l am
indebted to Alan for his research, to Turriff Printers for making the
boards and to the Men's Shed for making the framework. The
Council have agreed to mount them on posts for us.
Sadly we are still short of volunteers to open the Session Cottage on
a regular basis. The roof has been repaired. However we still have a
problem with damp and are trying various means to combat this. I
What of the future:

th
Thi5 year so far we celebrated the 80 Anniversary of VE day.
We have started a display to commemorate 100 years of girl Guiding
in Turriff. It will be added to as more items become available. so if
anyone has anything relating to that, please let us know.
We will once again be at Turriff Show and plans are ongoing for the
display. At the moment it's under wraps.
We had another busy day on May Day but again we can only do this
with the support of the volunteers and the Board is very grateful for
that support. Personally I wish to thank the volunteers and the
member5 of the Board for all their hard work which allows us to
show off this great facility.
Thank you for coming along tonight
Any questions.
