Trustees’ Annual Report Year ended 31 December 2023

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing Document

The Church is administered in accordance with the terms of the Deed of Constitution (Unitary Form)

Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees

Members of the Kirk Session are the charity trustees. The Kirk Session members are the elders of the church and are chosen from those members of the church who are considered to have the appropriate gifts, skills and commitment to contribute to the management affairs of the Church. The Interim Moderator, who is a member of the Kirk Session, is appointed by Presbytery.

Organisational Structure

|

The Kirk Session, which is chaired by the Interim Moderator, meets six times a year and is responsible for spiritual affairs, finance and fabric within the church.

Objectives and Activities

The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in doctrine, Reformed in tradition and Presbyterian in polity. It exists to glorify God and to work for the advancement of Christ's Kingdom throughout the world. As a national Church, it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty to bring the ordinances of religion to the people in every parish of Scotland through a territorial ministry. It co-operates with other Churches in various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond.

Our mission objective for this year continues to be our wish to increase our involvement in the local community, and thereby encourage more folk to become involved in the life of the Church. Supporting local and national charities remains at the heart of what we do.

We have a very good support system within the congregation and wider community supporting all aspects of church life. Our services continue to be led by members of the congregation with additional support of lay preachers, retired ministers and pulpit supply when needed and for this, we as a church, are extremely grateful. We continue to welcome families for funerals, weddings and baptisms.

In March, the young members of the congregation led our Lent Service with singing, prayers and a performance of The Good Shepherd.

3

As part of our fundraising, a musical evening was held in September, involving local talent both young and old from the wider community. This was well attended and greatly enjoyed by all. Fellowship was enjoyed at the close of the concert with tea/coffee and cake. Our Harvest Thanksgiving Service was well attended in October and a Harvest Lunch of soup and cake was enjoyed by all at the close of the service.

Our Remembrance Service was again well attended by members of the general community, ex-service people and local organisations. Many of those in attendance joined the congregation at the close of the Service for tea/coffee and fellowship. Our Christmas season of events started at the beginning of December with the traditional decorating of the church windows. The church windows were decorated by members of the community and church members, the theme this year being 'Christmas Traditions'. The church was open, for viewings of the windows, during December with refreshments. Donations were taken for church funds. The local Primary School children attended a special opening and enjoyed their visit. They were each given a gift of Christmas chocolate as a small gift from the church. A very successful community Nativity Play was held again involving members of the congregation and the extended community. This event was very well attended and greatly enjoyed by all!! Tea/coffee and mince pies were served after the play. Community carol singing was organised just before Christmas in both Port Logan and Drummore and it was well supported by the community. A well-attended Christingle service was held on the Sunday prior to Christmas with refreshments served at the close of the service. A retiring offering for PIRSAC, Port William based rescue, was uplifted at the end of December.

We remain well supported by our congregation and the wider community in our efforts to ensure the continued life and ministry of our church in Drummore.

Achievements and Performance

Our church remains a visible and valued part of the community, and we give sincere thanks for the continued support so generously shown to us.

A musical evening was held in September and was very well attended raising £591 for church funds.

Throughout the year, donations of food, toiletries etc continue to be collected and delivered to Rhins Churches Basics Bank, and in October, when we held our Harvest Thanksgiving, we again donated all the items brought to the Church to the Basics Bank. A Harvest Lunch was provided, raising £80 for church funds.

The Remembrance Day Service was well attended by the extended community and a donation of £85 was sent to Poppy Scotland.

In December, the viewings of the decorated Church windows and the Christmas Nativity play raised £746 for Church funds. Community carol singing took place on the Saturday before Christmas, and raised the sum of £143 for Erskine Hospital and Home for ex-service people.

On the last Sunday of the year, a retiring offering raised £25 for PIRSAC, our local rescue team based at Port William.

Financial Review

The Church’s principal sources of income are weekly free will offerings (59%), bank account interest and Investment Income (22%) and tax recovered from the previous year’s offering through Gift Aid (11%). Overall these figures are similar to our sources of income figures in 2024.

In comparison to 2024, our fundraising events have raised more money, a 72% increase. Our tax recovered from Gift Aid shows a 16% increase and Gift Aid donations have increased by 26%. However, Open Plate contributions have seen a 17% decrease and WFO Scheme ( non gift aid ) a decrease of 30%

We have continued to have members of the congregation along with lay preachers and retired ministers taking our services but we have had access to pulpit supply, giving a cost of £500.

Fabric and maintenance costs are similar to 2024 due to interior and exterior decoration to our church. These costs include £2700 for architect fees for the proposed installation of an accessible toilet and kitchen area within the church.

Heating and lighting costs for 2025 are similar to 2024. Insurance premiums continue to be higher in 2026, due to Kirkmaiden Old Kirk still being classified as a 'Closed Building’ pending it's sale.

At the end of 2025 we have seen an overall increase of £2606 in the monies held by Kirkmaiden Parish Church.

_ Reserves Policy

It is the Trustees’ policy to keep at least six months expenses in unrestricted reserves. At the year end the Church held £26584 of which £1813 has been designated for fabric and £841 designated for the Kirkmaiden Parish Church Benevolent Fund. The remaining balance of £23930 represents approximately 13 months expenditure.

In addition the Church held £1870 of restricted funds which have been provided for the purposes specified in Note 2.

Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities

The members of the Kirk Session are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which, on request, must reflect the financial position of the Church at that time. This must be done to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 and the Regulations Anent Congregational Finance approved by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 2007. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Church and must take reasonable steps for the prevention and/or detection of fraud and other irregularities.
