December 2025
Structure. Governan￿ and Mana8ement
Governing Document
The Church is administered in ac¢ordance with the tenns of the Model Deed of Constltutlon.
Re¢rultment and Appolntment of Trustees
Members of the Kirk Session and the Congregational Board are the charity trustees.
The Kirk Session members are the elders of the Church and are chosen from those members of
the Church who are considered to have the appropriate gifts and skills. As we have no rnlnister
at present, an interim moderator has been appointed by P￿sbVtery.
The Congregatlonal Board Is appointed from wlthln the congre8atlon, and members of the
congregation are invited to nominate individuals who are believed to have the skills and
commitment to contribute to the management affairs of the Church, to become members of
the Board. Board Members a￿ then appointed at the Stated Annual Meeting and serve for a
perlod of three years, after which they Must seek reelection at the next Stated Annual Meeting.
Oryanl&ttlonal Slrurture
The Kirk Session, which 15 chaired by the Mlnister or Interim Moderator, met five tlmes durln8
the year and is responsible for Spiritual affalrs wlthin the Church. The Congre8ational Board Is
also chaired by the Minister or Interim Moderator. and during 2025 met ten times. It is
responsible for all temporal matters of the Church. Certain responsibilities are delegated to a
Busines5 Cornrnittee for discussion and recommendations put forward prior to Congregational
Board meetings being held.

Objectives and Actlvltles
The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in dortrine, Refomied in tradition and Presbiterlan in
pollty. It exlsts toglorify God and to work for the advancementof Christ's Kingdom throughout
the world. As a national Church, it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty to bring the
ordinances of reli8lon to the people in every parish of Scotland through a territorial ministry. It
cooperates wlth other Churches in various ecumen1￿1 bodies in Scotland and beyond. We are
a150 involved in Ruther8len Churches Together. hostin8 some of the Holy Week service5.
Rutherglen West and Wardlawhlll Parlsh Church of Scotland is based In church bulldings and
halls to the west of Rutherglen Main Street at Western Avenue, Rutherglen. Glasgow, G73 IJQ
It is at this location that the congregation holds Its servlces of worship each Sunday mornlng.
There is also a lully utilised suite of halls to the east of Ruther8len fv1ain street at Hamllton
Road, Rutherglen, Glasgow, G73 3DF.
Sunday worship take5 the form of a service condurted each week by internal Worship leaders
and also from worship leaders accessed from the pre5byterfs pulplt supply list. The Rev lan
'Cathcart leads the Communion services as well as any other special 5ervlces.
Whlle Sunday worship is the focus of our weekly activities, Rutherglen West and Wardlawhlll
Par15h Church of Scotland has activities each day of the week. Our halls in Western Avenue and
also those 51tuated at the east end of the burgh in Hamilton Road, Rutherglen, Glasgow, G73
3DF are used each day by unlformed organlsatlons. church organlsatlon5 and communlty
groups.
The gardens in Western Avenue, which surround the church buildin8s, are open each day for
members ofthe local community to enjoy. The Calm, which is erected at the re3r of the Church,
Is the focal polnt In the garden, and many plaques have been mounted on It by members of the
congregation and the community in memory of loved ones. Several area5 of seating are
available. providing the opportunity for quiet reflection. The gardens are maintained by the
Garden Team, thi5 being a group of volunteers consistin8 of members of the congregation who
rneet every Saturday morning durin8 the growing season. Each year, a Cairn memorial Service is
held In our garden.

The community see our church and halls as a necessary venue for companionship and support.
Two church-run groups meet each week in the Westem Avenue halls:
The Friendship Café 15 on Tuesday mornings in the Western Avenue halls. This is a
donation-based venture. which allows the Café to support the Church financially
throughout the year.
Busy Fingers is a group which meets eoth Friday afternoon for people to pursue craft
projects.
The church also runs three community facilities underthe banner of The Nurturing Nook:
A Warm Hub Café on Mondays, which supplies soup, sandwiches, pies and company
during the wlnter months.
A Parent Café to provlde a meeting point for parent5 and pre-school chlldren each
Thursday.
A fitness and wellbein8 8roup. Kru In the KlrK meets each Thursday evening to
encourd8e exercise in an enjoyable and friendly wav.
These ventures have been growlng in numbers and welcomed by our frlends and nelghbours in
the community.
There are also the various sertions of youth or8anisations held in both suites of halls each week.
The Boys, Bri8ade meet in the Hamilton Road Halls each Thursday for their ArKhor Boy5,
Junlor Sectlon, Company Settlon and Seniors. Unfortunately, due to numbers and staff
dlfficultie5, the company closed in September after servin8 the wmmunity for 111 years.
The Scout Group meet in the Western Avenue Halls each Wednesday and, wlth the
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, cater for children from the age of 5 to 18 years.
Uslng our premlses each weekday is a Nursery and Pre-school Class and an After-school Club.
There are also Comrnunity Groups such as:

We also support our communlty by provldin8 accommodation for our local Citizens, Advice

and adjoining parishes.

audlence. The church website also carries contact telephone numbers and Informatlon
about the go¥emance of our charity, includin8 downloadable verslons of our
Constltution and this document.

AChi•￿MentS and Perfonnance
though the Congregation of Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Parish Church of Scotland was
formed in 2(MJ7 by the very successful Union of two local Churches, namely the West Parish
Church and Wardlawhill Parish Church. the buildin8 has been used for weekly worship for 175
th
years. Thls 175 anniversary was marked by a special service on Sunday, 2 November, which
was conducted by the Moderator of Glasgow Presbytery, Rev George Mackay. Thi5 Wa5
followed by lunch for a11200 attendees. At present. we have 212 members. wlth an average
attendance of approximately 73 people worshipln8 on a typical Sunday.
Other special services held in the Ruther8len West and Wardlawhill Church sanrtuary include:
Communion services in March, June, Ortoberand December.
A Divine 5er¥ice for the Local Orange Lodges.
A Divine Service for the local Masonic Lodges.

A service to close the 195 Glasgow Boys, Brigade Company and the laylng up of the
Company Colours.
The Remembrance Sunday service.
A Gift Day servlce at which church member5 donated Chrtstmas presents to local
children.
We are still In a vacancy with the Rev lan Cathcart of Flemin8ton Hallside Church belng
appointed as Interim Moderator. Wlth chan8es in the Presbytery Plan, we are in a grouping of
churches cons15tlng of Rutherglen Old, Fernhlll & Cathkln, Brld8eton St France5 in the East and
ourselves. The Presbytery Plan 15 to reduce the number of buildin￿ and mlnisters Within our
group. As we move towards a union of ourselve5 and Rutherglen Old Parish, the two churche5
have been havin8 monthly joint services alternately in each sanctuary. A small team of four
Members frorn each Kirk Session are also meeting regularly to brin8 this union to fruition.
The Ways and Means group normally organise a variety of social and fundraisin8 activities
throu8hout the year. These events include:
Coffee mornings
Involvement at the annual Rutherglen Landemer Day event and
Our annv31 Chiistfflas Fair.
While one of the principal aims of these activitie5 15 to raise funds for the Church, the other is to
promote fellowship and communitywithin the parish and beyond.

Durin8 the year, we have continued to work closely with Rutherglen and Cambuslang Food
Bank, with donations of food and other necessities being made available by members of our
congregation, with regular updates of the on8oing 51tuation being given at each of our Board
Meetings and Sunday services.
As can be seen, local groups and uniformed organisations ￿gUlarlY make use of our halls at
Western AvenuÈ and Hamilton Road, helping to keep our Church and its buildSngs firmly at the
heart of the community. We are indeed fortunate to have these two sets of halls, which help us
to ensure activltles can take place at either end of the Royal Burgh of RutherglÈn every day of
the week.

Flnanclal Revlew
We have again thls year adopted the Receipts and Payments method of preparing our Annual
Accounts.
The General Fund 15 the key account of the Church as It sets out the normal day-to-day spendin8
and how it 15 financed, which is mainly by 81vings from our members, Con8re8ational Donations,
other donations, fundraising events and income received for the use of our premises both at
Western Avenue and Hamilton Road.
The level of offerings shows decrease of S.1% frorn 2024. Our Gift Aid claim to HMRC for those
donatlons and those colletted under the Gift Aid Small Donation Scheme has also decreased by
£453 from the previous year. On average, we continue to make daims quarterly on behalf of 47
members who have completed Gift Aid Declaratlon Forms, the majorfty usin8 Glft Aid
envelopes, but 18 by monthly or weekly Standin8 Order payments.
At the end of 2025, we have nine long-term lets spread between Western Avenue and Hamllton
Road.
Total Recelpts for the year amounted to £122,352. This include5 £33,894 for hall lets, a Legacy
of £7,lI￿ and drdw down from General Trustee5 of £12,IXXI.

It is the Trustees, policy to hold reserves to cover approximately 12 months of operational
expenditure, but at the year-end, the Church held funds of £29,602 for purposes as specified In
Note 2. In addition, the Church holds £7,442 of restricted funds for purposes as specified in
Note 2.
Statement of Trustees, Responslbilities
The Trustees must prepare financial statements whtth 8ive 5uffKient detail to enable an
appreclatlon of the trdn5artions of the Church during the flnancial year. The Trustees are
responsible for keepin8 proper accountin8 records which, on request, must reflect the financlal
positlon of the Church at that time. This must be done to ensure that the financial statements
comply with the Charities and Trustee Investment IScotland} Art 2005, the Charities Accounts
(Scotlandl Regulatlons 2006 as amended by the Charities Accounts Iscotland) Amendment
Re8ulailons 2010 and the Regulatlons Anent Congregatlonal Flnance approved by the Generdl
Assembly of the Church of Scotland In 2016. They a￿ also responsible for safeguardin8 the
asset5 of the Church and must tak£ reasonable steps for the prevention andlor detection of
fraud and other irregLtlarities.
