ObJect5ves and Attivities
The Church of scotland isTrinrtsrian in doctrine, Reformed in tradttion and Presbyterian
in polity. It exists to Blorify God and to work forthe advancement of Christ's Kingdom
throughout the world. A5 a national church it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty
to bring the ordinances of religlon to the people in every parish of Scotland through a
natlonal ministry. It cooperates with other Churches in variou5 ecumenical bodies in
Scotland and beyond.
At Old Gourock & Ashton, one service of worship is held each Sunday at 10am when
usually the Young Church meets with an age range from birth through to the end of
Primary School. Additionally, occasional 5eTvices in diffe￿nt formats are offered and
bible study groups and quiet meditstion times take place at appropriate times of the
Christian year. The Sacrament of Holy Communion 15 celebrated cin four Sundays at
appropriate times of the year. informal Communion Services are usually held at the
close of Sunday worship on thefirst sunday of most months and on four midweek
3fternoon5 during the year Communion Services followed by tea/coffee fellowship are
offered to our less able conimunicaTrts. In addition, Home Communion is available to
housebound members. by arrangement with the Ministeror Convener of the Pastoral
Committee.
The congregation is fortunate in having tvlo sets of halls which are well used for a wide
range of actlvities by different groups. A list of organisations and activities is to be
found at the end ofthis report. The halls are also used by a number of community
groups.
Achievefnerrt5 and Perfomian
Attendance at SundayseNices have been fairlystable since the end of the COVID
pandemic, on average between 125 and 140 in-person which is below the 150-170
before COVID, but the streamed service regularly attracts over 250 views each week.
The services continued to be streamed on Facebook Live and we have evidence that
folk from as far apart as Australia and Canada watch either live or a recording on one of
the available platfomis. Many people also ￿￿tch in Gourockl Recorded services are
also available on YouTube.
Of course, there were several occasions duringthe year when the sanctuary was filled
well above the "average" number of people. Four services in particular stsnd out in

that respect: the Unlformed OrEanlsatlons' Parade in September, the Remembrance

Christmas Sunday Service.
Our organisations continued their activities in 2024 and, likewise, the community
groups which nomially use our halls <keepfft, the art dassi yoga, country dancingi
community choir etc).
The Dementia Café celebrated its 2nd Birthday in August 2024 and continues to prove
a valuable asset for Dementia sufferers and carers alike. The Café volunteers alsoget
fulfilment frorn it and anyone who would like to join our band of volunteers will be
made very welcome. The Dementia Cafe is available to the whole community and
meets in the Islay Hall every Friday afternoon from 2pm until 3.30pm. People suffering
from dementia are welcome alongwith a carer, who must st3ythroughout the tirne

Week by week, our congregation has been privileged to have high quality worship

during the school year, Eastercode and Bubble Gum and Fluff. and, happily, both
continued in 2024. In addition, in September our congregation hosted Clydeview
Academy's Annual Awards Ceremony.
Throughout Advent, as in past years, the cOng￿gatIon was invited to make financial
donations for the benefit of charities. For 2024. the Kirk Session decided that the
charities to be supported were Chlldren in Poverty Inverclyde {CIPII, Marfs Meals and

Financial Review
The Statement of Financial Activities ISOFAI shows that our total income amounted to
£273,405 and total expenditure was £196,630 resulting in a surplus of £76.775 before
recognising investment revaluation gains of £5,086. These had the overall effect of
increasing funds by £81.861.
There was a General Fund deficit for the year of £5,170 reflecting an increased 'Giving
to Grow, contribution to the Church of Scotland along with higher utilities and cleaning
costs.
The major movement in Restricted Funds refiects a £IOO,CrfJ) legary from the estate of
the late John Hawthorn. Thi5 is split as a £50,OCKJ contribution to the Mcvicar Fletcher
Memorial Fund and £50,000 to establish a new fund for Youth Development in OGA.
Our De5igllated funds moved in line wrth nom7al income and expenditu￿ levels.
During the year £7,785 was raised by the congregation in specific appeals for external
charitable purposes as detailed in note 14 to the account5. This is in addition to further
charitable fund raising undertaken by church organisations and collection5 of gifts and
materials for other local charities.
The Balance Sheet reflects the increase in fund5 as explained in the SOFA so that at the
end of the year net a55ets totalled £479,721. This comprise5 £36.596 of tangible fixed
assets. investments of £212,775 and net current assets lie bank depostt and current
account balances less net debtors / creditor5) of £230,250.
Consequently, there are available financial resource5 lie excluding tangible fixed a5setsl
in unrestricted fund5 of £330.742. This level of resources is considered adequate to
support the trustees, assessment that our charity 15 a going concern.
Investment pollry and perfomiance
The trustees seek to hold funds generdlly in lower risk investments. Deposits are held
within current accounts with the Royal Bank of Scotland and in the Church of Scotland
Deposit Fund. Recognising that certain funds can be held for the longer term, funds
are also held in the Church of Scotland Income Fund and the Church of Scotland
Growth Fund. which provide an annual return and also allow for c2Pltal growth.
Income returns were as expected with market value5 increasing marginally acros5 the
year.
Risk management
The trustees consider risks facing the Churth through the maintenance of a risk register
which is the subject of periodic discussions at Session meetings. Key risks identified
include {il the future shape of the Church in Gourock, {iil a falling congregation with an
increasing age profile liiil long term financial 5115tainability livl a breach of safeguarding
requirements Iv) loss of key individuals including Youth organisation leaders Ivil

lincluding Health & Safety requirements). Mitigations have been identified to the
extent that these are within our control. Actions to address the risks are documented
in the risk register with allocated responsibilities and review dates.
Reserves Policrf
It Is the trustee5' policy to hold reserve5 to allow the church to complete its ongoing
charitable work and to maintain its properties in a suitable condition for this work to
continue. In addition, as described in note 13. bequests are maintained in a separate
fund to meet major and unplanned work.
Structure, Governance and Management
The Church is administered in accordance wlth the terms of the Deed of Unitary
Constitution which was agreed at the Stated Annual meeting held in March 2009. This
involves the Kirk Session and its commtttees.
The Unitary Constitution states that the members of the Kirk Session are the charity
trustees. However, we recognise that, inevttably. people ordained as Elders become
older and frailer with tlme and become unable to attend ￿rk Session meeting5 and tske
part in decision making. Therefore, we have two categories of Elders .' Trustee Elders lof
which we had 46 at 31" December 20241 and Non-Trustee Elders lofwhich we had 4 at
31st December 2024). The Kirk Session members are the Elders of the church, chosen
from those members of the church who are considered to have the appropriate gifts
and skills and who have accepted appointment to the Kirk Session. The Minister is also
a member of the Kirk Session and has been elected by the congregation and inducted
to the charge by the Presbytery.
The Kirk Se55ion met four times in 2024. with a fifth schedsjled meeting, in December.
postponed due to the Moderator being ill.
Our activities in terms of numbers show that our Communion Roll has fallen from 478
at 31 December 2023 to 467 at 31.: December 2024. mainly a5 a result of the deaths
of 13 members. 4 people joinEd the congregation by Transfer of Certificate. During the
year the Minister conducted 5 Weddings, 3 Child Baptisms and 36 Funerals, including
parish funerals.
The Pastoral Committee was again able to arrange their usual four Mid-week
Communion Service5 and to assist the Minister with visits to house-bound or
h05Pitalised members and kept in touch bytelephone with as many people as they
thew about who were ill or housebound and flowers were distributed to manv.
Additionally, at Easter and at Christmas, gifts and flowers or plants were distributed to
around 30 homes. Meanwhile, the Community Interests Committee arranged two
collections of food for the Foodbank and also two collections of essential goods for
Starter Pack5 Inverclyde. The Social Committee organised two outings by bus: one to
Edinburgh to Holyrood Palace. plus Aftemoon Tea at Erskine Garden Centre on the way
home, and one to McArthur Glen at Livingston forshopping. A5 reported earlier, the
