1.0 Chairperson Review

The IGEM Scottish Section has delivered a strong and purposeful year, focused on advancing safety, supporting the energy transition, and developing the next generation of talent across our sector. Through a targeted program of events, we have engaged over 100 members, strengthened industry collaboration, and continued to raise the profile of IGEM across Scotland.

We’ve centered our efforts around three core themes that reflect both the challenges and opportunities in front of us:

1. Innovation for today – Practical solutions that can improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of our day to day operation for ourselves, colleagues and customers.

2. Transition for tomorrow – Spotlighting hydrogen, biomethane, and the energy future.

1. Developing our people – Championing the growth of talent across the sector through events, mentoring, and support, with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and future leadership.

A major highlight has been the IGEM Scottish Section Travelling Fellowship, which this year saw Antonio Caraballo travel to Japan to advance his research on hydrogen pipeline networks. Antonio’s work in Japan has strengthened international collaboration and brought valuable insight into hydrogen pipeline development, reinforcing Scotland’s role within the global energy transition.

While membership remains stable overall, we recognise the need to strengthen progression into Chartered and Incorporated grades. This will be a key focus in the year ahead, supported by targeted mentoring and increased engagement with employers and early-career professionals.

Looking forward, our priority is to build on this momentum—expanding our reach, deepening collaboration across sectors, and continuing to deliver high-impact initiatives that support a safe, sustainable and resilient energy future.

2.3 Objectives and activities

The purpose of the charity is to promote the engineering science as applied to the gas industry. We achieve this through:

• providing education

• supporting local charitable organizations

• providing for cases of financial hardship or another disadvantage

• supporting community development

We hold meetings and seminars throughout the year at which information and matters of educational value in the gas industry are shared. We promote the development of engineers’ knowledge and understanding of the sector. We enable persons who are, or have been, engaged in the conduct of gas undertakings, or who have been regularly educated as gas engineers, to meet and to correspond; to facilitate the interchange of ideas respecting improved methods of administration in gas undertakings, improvements in the manufacture and distribution of gas, its application to lighting, heating, production of power and other purposes, and the construction of gas works and gas appliances, and to conduct or promote investigations into all or any of the matters aforesaid or any matters connected therewith; and generally to aid, promote and encourage the acquisition and diffusion of knowledge concerning the production, application and distribution of gas, the conduct of gas undertakings and all related matters.

3.0 Structure, Governance and Management

3.1 Type of Governing Document

The charity’s governing document is found within the Governance Manual of the parent body, IGEM, and is supported by the Scottish Section Handbook. The charity complies with Appendix 4 of the IGEM Governance Manual - Rules of Institution Sections.

3.2 Trustee Recruitment and Appointment

The trustees are appointed annually at the IGEM Scottish Section Annual General Meeting or at local section meetings. Appointment and removal are conducted in accordance with the parent organization policies and procedures. IGEM, the parent body, operates under a Royal Charter granted in 1928.

4.0 Achievement and Performance

It has been a great year for the section and our members where we have delivered a program of high impact events reaching over 100 members.

Educational Activities

4.1.1 IGEM Hosts Gas Safety Week at Scottish Parliament

Fulton MacGregor MSP opened the event, highlighting the importance of bringing industry, policymakers, and safety experts together to strengthen gas safety across Scotland. He emphasised that collaboration is essential if we are to make the gas industry safer for everyone. He also acknowledged the support of Clare Adamson MSP, a long-standing advocate for IGEM and Gas Safety Week, who was unable to attend in person.

The SGN-sponsored event saw an excellent turnout, uniting MSPs and gas industry specialists to hear updates on gas safety initiatives and the latest CO research. Gordon McMillan introduced the evening’s speakers, noting that Gas Safety Week provides a vital platform to remind the public about safe appliance use and the dangers of poorly maintained systems, which can lead to gas escapes, fires, explosions, and CO poisoning.

4.1.2 IGEM Explores Series

‑ This year’s IGEM Explores series delivered three diverse and well received sessions designed to broaden ‑ perspectives across the energy sector. The program included an exploration of nuclear enabled hydrogen and ‑ its potential role in future low carbon energy systems; a session on sports science, highlighting performance, ‑ resilience and human factors relevant to engineering practice; and an innovation focused event showcasing ‑ emerging technologies and creative problem solving approaches. Together, these sessions strengthened cross ‑ disciplinary learning and reinforced IGEM’s commitment to developing curious, informed and future ‑ ready professionals.

4.1.1 IGEM Travelling Fellowship

The 2025 IGEM Scottish Section Travelling Fellowship saw Antonio Caraballo travel to Japan to advance his

project, “Advancing Hydrogen Pipeline Networks through Techno ‑ Economic and AI ‑ Led Collaboration.” During his visit, he engaged with leading hydrogen researchers at Kyushu University and participated in the International Hydrogen Energy Development Forum and HYDROGENIUS Symposium 2025. His work is already contributing valuable international insight into hydrogen pipeline development. Antonio will share his findings with the IGEM community through a Gas International article in 2026 and a presentation at the Young Persons Paper Competition Heat.

4.2 Young Person Activities

Our Young Persons Network (YPN) plays a key role in nurturing talented young professionals (aged between 18 and 35) at the beginning of their career. Our primary YPN event this year was the Young Persons Paper Competition (YPPC) Heats.

4.3.1 Young Persons Paper Competition Heats

The IGEM Scottish Section hosted its Young Persons’ Paper Competition (YPPC) Heat and AGM on 16 April 2026, bringing together members for an evening of technical insight and networking. Two high-quality presentations were delivered by Sarah Broydé-Speers (Hazardous Areas Impact Mitigation) and Temitayo Solanke (LTS Futures: Hydrogen Compatibility in Gas Networks), both addressing key challenges in the transition to net zero.

Judged by a panel of industry experts from SGN, Ofgem, Costain and Steer, the competition showcased strong technical capability and innovation. Sarah Broydé-Speers was announced as the winner, recognized for the clarity and impact of her work. The event also included the Section AGM, with updates on performance, governance and future priorities, followed by networking.

4.3 Fundraising Activities

4.3.1 Annual Charity Golf Day

On Friday, 27th September, IGEM hosted the Scottish Annual Charity Golf Event at the 6[th] Oldest Golf Course in the world, Royal Musselburgh Golf Club. The day was a roaring success, filled with friendly competition, exciting hole challenges, and a vibrant atmosphere. The event offered a brilliant opportunity for members and guests to network, engage in some healthy competition, and support a worthy cause. One of the standout moments of the day was the fundraising efforts for the Hearts and Minds that helps children in hospitals and people living with dementia. The generosity of the attendees was incredible, with £2,750 raised through various activities like a raffle, purchased mulligans and free throws, and our flagship auction featuring brilliant prizes.

5.0 Financial Review

5.1 Background

The IGEM Scottish Section Education and Development funds have been registered and active Scottish Charity for a considerable number of years. Since the introduction of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the status of each charity is reviewed annually and requires the submission of annual accounts to Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). This has been satisfactorily completed since 2006. The IGEM Scottish Section Education and Development funds status can be viewed on the web site: www.oscr.org.uk under charity registration SC006601.

5.2 Financial Review

The financial review for the accounting period from December 2025 to 2026 remains strong.

6.0 Summary of Membership

The Scottish Section’s total membership has shown a slight decrease over the past year, decreasing total member from 337 members in 2025 to 331 members in 2026:

• Sustained strength in the Engineering Technician base.

• Associate membership is still strong, offering a strong early-career pipeline

• Ongoing decline in Chartered and Incorporated Members, highlighting the need for stronger upgrade pathways and retention strategies which will be a target for the upcoming year.

• Student members are slightly up with graduates slightly less, requiring renewed focus on outreach and engagement with educational institutions.

7.0 The Future

As we look ahead, with our new chairperson Stuart Serlock, the IGEM Scottish Section will focus on delivering targeted, high-impact initiatives that strengthen our role in supporting a safe, sustainable and evolving energy sector. Our approach will continue to be centered on three core priorities: advancing the energy transition, developing our people, and increasing industry engagement.

7.1 Educational Initiatives

We will enhance our programme of technical and professional development through the continued expansion of the IGEM Explores series, targeted webinars, and site visits to leading hydrogen and green gas projects. Engagement with policymakers will remain a priority, including a return to the Scottish Parliament to showcase innovation and reinforce the importance of gas safety and emerging technologies.

7.2 Young Person Activities

Developing early-career professionals remains central to our mission. We will continue to deliver the Young Persons’ Paper Competition (YPPC) and broaden our Young Persons Network through additional events, mentoring opportunities, and structured support to encourage progression towards professional registration.

7.3 Fundraising and Community Impact

We will build on the success of our Annual Charity Golf Day, maintaining it as a flagship event that supports charitable causes while strengthening industry connections. Further opportunities will be explored to increase community engagement and maximise the impact of our fundraising activities.

Through these priorities, we aim to strengthen our contribution to the sector, support our members’ development, and play an active role in shaping the future of the gas and wider energy industry.
