The objects of the Society shall be lo perpeluale the memory of John Buchan by
bfinging his achievements to the no11￿ of the general public. and by seeking to
promote a greater understanding of his lrfe and works. In pursuance of ils objects. it
shall be compelenl for the ￿lety to raise and hold funds," to seek financial aid from
such sources as may be available.. and to take any other acbon deemed appropriate
for the furthera￿￿ of tts aims and objects.
In addthon, the SocEty supports and promotes the WOTk of the John Buchan Story at
the Chambefs Institute at Peeb￿.
The main actwit￿S undertaken in relation lo ￿ above Obj￿15 are the publicats.on of
one leamed ioumal yearty, regular newsletters. an annual dinner with an expert
speaker on sorne aspect of Jthn Buchan. his life and work, a very active website for
the promotion and marketing of his works, the production and distribution of publicly
available thxlcasts. and the general promotion of a greater understanding and
appreciation of John Buchan and his literary works. and his lrfe.

The main achievements of the charity during the year have been for the Society
and its Members to work diligentty in the furthe[a￿e of the 'Obieth"ves &
Activities,. as well as the inVo￿ement of MeM￿r5 of the Sw'ety in widening
knowledge of. and interest in, John Buchan and his l¢lerary worf<s. and his lrfe.
Financial Review
The So¢Ety's poly on reserves is thaL when surplus ftjnds are available. they
will be hekl againsl the possibility. for example. of expanding the range of methods
of engaging wrth the wider public in the furtherance of the Society's objecbves
(examples in recent years being the ongoing reconstruction and expansion of the
Society's website, and the creakn.on of a series of public￿ available Podcasts).

The JBS Members, annual gathering and AGM were held in Glasgow in Marth 2024.

The J8S Website. the Members, Newsletter and the JBS Joumal continue lo spread the word about the
Society and about JB. Furthemore, the North American group CDntinues to Ilourish, with another dinner
and talks planned for 2025 in Canada. The websrte is b￿ng u

In September 2024, a very successful Ser￿ of talks were once again given in the biennial Durham
conferenee, this lime organised by Ursula Buchan. The theme wvered JB'S ficb.on and how he managed
lo in¢orporate landscape and weather. the supematural. pK)lÉtics. and aspècts of class and money. into his
novels and short stories.
As il is the 15O1h annNetsary of JB'S birth in 2025. several actsvil*s are t*ing planned to celebrate this
event, including the Members. annual gathering and AGM being held in Perth, the city of his birth, and il is
hoped that a volume of essays by a var￿ty of contemwjrary writers and commentators will b6 published at
some point in the next year.
The Society remains in a healthy stale financialty with a stable membeTship, which we hope will grow again
in response to both the r￿nt and the planned w(kasts. and publicty ielated to the significant

Independent Examinerfs Report to the Council Members of The John Bu¢han Society
I report on the accounts for the year ended 31st January 2025 sel out on pages four to six.
Respective responsibilities of council membews and examiner
The charity's Council Mem￿TS are reswnsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance wtth the
terms of the Charrties and Trustee Inveslment Iscotiandl Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts IScolland}
Regulations 2006 las amended). The charty's Council members Consider that the audrf( requirement of
Regulation 1011 Ild} of the Accounts Regulations does not appty. 11 is my responsibility to examine the
accounts as required under section 4411llcl of the Act and to state whether partjcular matters have come
lo my attention.
Basis of independent examinerfs report
My exafflination is carried out in accordance wtth RegU￿tion 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotlandl
Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a
comparison of the accounts presented wrth those re￿rds_ 11 also includes consideration of any unusual
items or disck)sures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Council members concerning
any such matters. The proced¥Jres undertaken th not provide all the evidence that would be required in an
audit, and Consequent￿ I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

In connection with rny examination. no matter has come to my attention:
