Trustees’ Annual Report
The Trustees present the annual report and accounts for the church for the year ended 31 December 2023.
Structure, Governance and Management
Governing Document
The Church is administered in accordance with the terms of the Deed of Constitution (Unitary Form).
Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees
All active Elders are the charity trustees. Elders are elected by the Kirk Session.
The Kirk Session members are chosen by the Elders of the church and are considered to have the appropriate gifts and skills to manage the affairs of the Congregation. The minister, who is a member of the Kirk Session, is elected by the congregation and inducted by Presbytery.
The Kirk Session has responsibility for all of the affairs within the church. The Trustees are each involved in one of the following committees which assist in the running of the affairs of the congregation: Fabric and Finance; Pastoral Care; Worship; Discipleship; and, Outreach. Each committee has nominated three Elders who, along with the Minister, Session Clerk and the Treasurer, form the Kirk Session. The Kirk Session decides policy and practice and these are implemented by the relevant committee. The Kirk Session and Committees meet in January, March, June, September and November each year.

Objectives and Activities
The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in doctrine, Reformed in tradition and Presbyterian in polity. It exists to glorify God and to work for the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom locally and throughout the world. As a national Church it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty to bring the ordinances of religion to the people in every parish of Scotland through a territorial ministry. It co-operates with other Churches in various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond.
Services of worship are held every Sunday in our Main Church Sanctuary at 11.00am. Additional services are held at Christmas and Easter.
Attached to the Church is our Church Guild which meets every second week, from September to May. Within our Morning Services we have Creators Club (Sunday School) meeting every second week. During the week a Bible Study Group meets every second Wednesday morning, and we have two groups that meet in homes for Bible Study and fellowship.
Our Youth activities include a Boys’ Brigade Company who meet within our Main Church Halls.
We host a foodbank, supported by several churches, which supplies food packages to those in need.
Our main community activity in Monkton village is running The Pioneer Café which is attached to the Monkton Community Church. This venture generates funds through mainly volunteer service and the tips that the volunteers receive are donated to local and national charities. The Café has remained closed since March 2020.
Our halls are well used by a variety of community groups throughout the week.

Achievements and Performance
We have been a vacant charge since April 2020. We were delighted to welcome Rev David McLeod as Locum Minister starting in December 2022 and finishing in December 2023.
Our services are well attended. We use audio visual systems to present words, music, video clips and Powerpoint presentations during worship. We livestream our services on YouTube, and the numbers viewing each week have remained good. We serve Teas after the service and this is well attended.
Our Flower ministry ensures fresh flowers are on display during Sunday services and the flowers are delivered after the service to members of the congregation who are ill, bereaved, or having a special birthday or anniversary, and are always very gratefully received. They come as a gentle reminder to these folks that they remain in our thoughts and prayers.
In 2023 we were delighted to celebrate three baptisms, one baby and two adults, as well as welcoming two further members by profession of faith.
At Easter we opened a Prayer Room in the Session House and it was well used. We held Communion in person in June and October. The Presbytery Mission Plan means we are to unite with Prestwick South Parish Church and we have been building links with them, holding joint services in August and again in Advent. We opened the Halls for Prestwick Christmas Light Switch On day, serving refreshments and craft activities for children. This was well received.
The Pioneer Café in Monkton is no longer open daily as a café but the buildings, including Monkton Community Church are well used by the community.
The Bible Study group has united with Prestwick South Bible Study group in preparation for the congregations uniting, as set out in the Presbytery Mission Plan. They have moved from the Session House to the Small Hall due to the increase in numbers attending.
Monkton & Prestwick North Guild have united with Prestwick South Guild and meetings are very well attended.
Our Boys’ Brigade Company continues to be well attended. In September the two companies meeting in Prestwick amalgamated in preparation for the churches uniting.

Financial Review and Plans For Future Period
Our principal source of income is from our weekly offerings. The detailed accounts for the year ended 31[st] December 2023 are on pages 10-16 of the report. The general fund shows a deficit of £987 of income less expenses for the year to 31[st] December 2023. Offerings of £58,644 show an increase of £620 on the previous year.
Our other main fund-raising activity is our Pioneer Café and is treated as restricted funds for charitable purposes.
We also administer a restricted Malawi fund. This fund ingathers monies from individuals, firms and churches all over Ayrshire and beyond. The fund is for the benefit of our Lweya Church and Bandawe Presbytery.
Reserves Policy
It is the Trustees’ policy to hold unrestricted bank reserves of approximately two months of known expenditure.
Invested Fabric Funds are realised occasionally to meet any extraordinary expenditure. At the year end, the church held unrestricted funds of £3,177. The church also held £14,670 of restricted funds which has been provided for the purposes specified in note 10.

Statement of Trustees Responsibilities
Charity law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year, which show a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity, and its financial activities for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operational existence.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
Approved by the Trustees and signed on their behalf.

Monkton and Prestwick North Parish Church of Scotland Independent Examiners Report Year ended 31 December 2023
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023 which are set out on pages 10 – 16.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
The charity trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have to come to my attention.
Basis of Independent examiner’s statement
My examination was carried in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.
Independent examiner’s statement
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to our attention:
-
which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: ●to keep accounting records in accordance with section 44(1) (a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations, and
- ●to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been meet, or
-
To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
