St Mark's Scottish Episcopal Church

Scottish Charity No $C002244 Report of the Vestry

Year Ended 31 August 2025

Introduction

The vestry is pleased to present the annual accounts for St Mark’s for the year ended 31 August 2025. We are a small congregation based in East Kilbride. We have been looking for a new rector since August 2022. We have had all our Sunday services covered by visiting clergy and have enjoyed worshipping with them however since January 2025 the m ajorityid-week of Wednesday our servicesservice have beenhas covered bybeen temporarilyspecsuspended. ases appointedled us through as ourAdvent interim andpriL e st.nt Study Our groups,September encouraged 2025, completed both pevisitserrto our sick and housebound, completeled us the with Spiritual some all-age Leadershipfamily courseservices, fromlinked in with many of the groups that use our halls and been a tremendous support to our congregation and Vesty. It is appropriate at this time that we thank her for all her work which she has done and continues to do at St Mark's.

The laity is actively involved in church with readings, intercessions, music, pastoral work and chalice bearers. We gather in the church hall after Sunday service for coffee. Our hall is also open to other groups and for church social and fundraising events. Our Church magazine is produced six times a year. This annual report and accounts present a summary of our financial activities during the year and gives an overview of the general activities which have taken place in the life of the church in the past year.

Activities and Achievements

During the last year we have continued with regular coffee mornings and our lunch club has restarted, however due to over-stretched resources we have not been able to have any other congregational activities or fundraising events. We have several external groups using the hall on a regular basis.

Our links with the community have continued under the Christians Together in the Murray group. The Smarteenies Toddler Group and the Foodbank, previously located at the South Parish Church, have continued to operate weekly in St Mark’s and during the last year the Murray Community hub was also set up and operates weekly from St Mark's. Whilst the South Parish Church no longer meets within the Murray, they are all very keen to keep these groups within the Murray community and also work with Connected EK to make sure we continue our outreach to the people in the community. Our link with St Cuthbert’s in Cambuslang has diminished.

Income

St Mark's relies mostly on the generosity of its congregation for the day-to-day funding through regular giving and supporting of fund-raising activities. In addition, rental for the use of the hall provide a significant amount along with the tax claimed back from the Inland Revenue on Gift Aid giving and under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS).

We are working hard to ensure we continue our monthly coffee mornings and lunch club and our hall is being used several times a week by dance, craft and wargamers groups in addition to the groups that have joined from South Parish. During the year we lost the yoga group that met on a Friday morning however the dance group continues to increase their hours and usage of our hall and is our main source of hall rental. Our ongoing concerns about our future ability to meet all our expenses in a timely manner continue although with less concern at the moment as we are not paying stipend. We are a small congregation and we look forward to having a new Rector to lead us going forward.

Structure St Mark’s is governed by a constitution. As a member congregation of the Diocese of Glasgow & Galloway in the Scottish Episcopal Church, it is also governed by Canon Law of the Scottish Episcopal Church. The management team of the church is known as the vestry. For the purposes of charities law, the members of the vestry are the Charity Trustees of the church. Apart from the Rector, members of the vestry are elected by the congregation at the annual general meeting. The Rector is appointed by the Bishop of the Diocese and the vestry.

Vestry Responsibilities

The vestry is responsible for managing and safeguarding the assets of the church and to assist the Rector in matters affecting the spiritual welfare of the congregation. They are also responsible for keeping proper accounting records and ensuring that the accounts are prepared in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006.

Relationship with the Diocese and Province

St Mark’s is supported by the Diocese and the Province through the pastoral oversight of the Bishop, central support functions provided at Diocesan level and grants from central funds. The church is represented at Diocesan level by the Rector and the Lay Representative. As a member of the Scottish Episcopal Church, St Mark’s has an obligation to contribute to the costs of the Diocese and the Province through payment of an annual “quota”. The amount is based on the relative level of income of the church in comparison with that of other churches in the Diocese and Province.

Conclusion

The members of the vestry would like to thank all those who contribute their time, energy and money so generously to ensure the continuation development of St Mark’s as a centre of worship. Our thanks also go to our independent
