TRUSTEES REPORT

The Trustees are pleased to present their report for the year ended 31 December 2025.

Recruitment and Appointment of Trustees

All Trustees are appointed or reappointed by the Members at the Annual General Meeting of the charity, usually held in April each year.

Governing Document

The Glasgow Society of Organists is an unincorporated association, and the purposes and administration arrangements are contained in the Constitution dated 6 April 2013 and is regulated by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).

Charitable Purposes

The purposes of the Society as set out in the Constitution are education of its members and the public in the art of music, with particular reference to organ and choral music.

Activities

The syllabus for the session is structured to encompass the education of both GSO members and the public. An Annual General Meeting is held in April when Members appoint Office Bearers and other Trustees (and can be proposed for a vacant post).

Each session the Trustees aim to provide a balanced syllabus of events which are accessible to players of all standards as well as non-players and the general public. During 2025 events ranged from organ recitals in various churches within Glasgow and the surrounding area, a recital given by David Hamilton in Motherwell Cathedral in memory of former GSO Honorary President Stewart Alston, a “come and sing” event in Glasgow University Memorial Chapel featuring Vivaldi’s Gloria and an organ crawl to Largs/Millport to visit three churches with the opportunity for members to play the organs within each church.

The Society also supported and contributed financially towards a WOOFYT (Wooden One-Octave Organ For Young Technologists) workshop hosted by St. Mary’s Cathedral Glasgow as part of their organ restoration project. This was an interactive workshop in which participants had the opportunity to play with a bare-bones arrangement of organ pipes and bellows. It is designed to teach the physics and engineering principals behind the instrument. The GSO considered this to be a good outreach project to raise the awareness of the pipe organ amongst young people within the Glasgow area.

The Society continued to support Sowne of Organe who are undertaking important work to raise awareness and document/record organs that are at risk of being lost with the large scale of church closures planned. The Society hosted an event with Sowne of Organe in St. Margaret’s Knightswood which profiled the endangered 1865 Father Willis organ.

In order to keep members of the Society up to date, the GSO continued to distribute its newsletter, called “The Glasgow Diapason” which is greatly appreciated by the membership. As well as providing space for members to share their news, the newsletter covers a range of matters including forthcoming syllabus events, updates from the President, Membership Secretary and Treasurer as well as topics that are being discussed by the Trustees. Articles covering a wider variety of subjects that are felt to be of interest to the members are also featured in the newsletter.

TRUSTEES REPORT

Activities (continued)

In between newsletter distribution the GSO continued to keep its members who had consented to receive email communication informed of events that may be of interest to them.

For each financial year the Treasurer prepares a budget to aid the Trustees in making informed decisions regarding various events, particularly when considering any larger, more costly, events such as a recital by a “celebrity” organist or events involving multiple musicians.

The Trustees remain acutely aware that the Society has in the past benefited from generous legacies which continue to be invested in the M&G Charifund units and as a result the Society continues to benefit from an increased level of investment income. The Trustees remain committed to ensuring that the legacies are used to enhance the activities of the Society and are keeping under continual review the most appropriate use of the funds.

The value of the investment at the year-end has increased significantly from the prior year and at 31 December 2025 was approximately 20.7% above the initial amounts invested (31 December 2024 – 3% above the initial amounts invested). The Trustees see the investment as being held for the long term and are aware that during that time the capital value of the investment will fluctuate. Given that the income yielded on the investment has been significantly in excess of any bank interest that would have been generated the Trustees remain satisfied with its performance.

Trustee Remuneration and Expenses

No Trustees received remuneration for services and six Trustees received reimbursement of expenses during the year (see Notes to the Accounts for further details).

Reserves

As a result of net receipts of £745 (2024 – £1,315), the Society held unrestricted funds of £12,141 at 31 December 2025 (31 December 2024- £11,396).

Investments

During the year ended 31 December 2025 the Society did not make any further investments (2024 – no further investments were made).

The Society held Investments in M&G Charifunds with a market value of £50,158 (cost £41,500) at 31 December 2025 (2024 – market value £42,750; cost £41,500).

Declaration

The Trustees declare that they have approved the Trustees’ Annual Report above.
